I remember the same commercial being reused in the '70s when the show was in syndication. I like the line, "A late bulletin from... the Cape! The Bat-Rocket!" Great pun.
I chatted via email with Dick Gautier who played Batman in the 1973 PSA commercial a few years prior to his passing. He didn’t have much to say about it except joking that he fit the costume, hence the job was his!
Dave, the Lava ad was done by my former employer, the Leo Burnett ad agency. Although it was well before my time, imagine my delight years later when I found photoboards of the ad in an old file cabinet. Only from reading the dialogue it was easy to imagine the exact inflections without seeing the film. Thanks!
@SteveSchildwachter Yes it is. 1970s and 80s we were living in Lagrange and later Hinsdale. Back in the day when McDonald's was headquartered in OakBrook. Cheers from Milwaukee.
For a split second, when the Metro is mentioned, I thought they were going to use the Bat Cave's passageway to the subway system since many places refer to the subway as the Metro. I was definitely caught by surprise. That one and the final PSA are ones I had not seen before. Thanks for presenting them to us Dave.
A year or so before the 1989 movie is when 20th Century Fox released the shiny new remastered prints to TV stations :). They did the same with Lost in Space
I was the only kid in the neighborhood who had the Batman Mego figure with the removable cowl. My friends at that time (1972) were very envious of that.
Again, about the equal pay PSA;. I never knew Batman was not played by Adam West until the magic of the internet. Dick Gauthier's intonations sounded enough like West's to throw me off any question.
If the payoff to the Metro commercial doesn’t make sense, it’s because the tagline is uniquely British. Penguin was and still is a brand of chocolate covered biscuit/ cookie. The tagline for the Penguin commercials in the 70s and 80s often featuring penguins in amusing situation was “p-p-p pick up a penguin”. So the adopted tagline in that Batman related commercial “if you’ve got to ‘pick up a penguin’” is a clever player on the original. Penguins are very nice biscuits. Apologies for Britsplaining 😅
And the fact we see Bats and Robin in a regular car here brings things full circle given how the 1943 and '49 serials have them in a regular car vs building the Batmobile
In the 80s, I do recall hearing about a Batman TV show revival of interest in the UK, when it was played on late night. Also The Phil SIlvers show experienced a resurgence of interest in the UK when it was played on late night TV.
The end of the British PSA with the kids is awkward, but I bet it was so that the local stations could then insert their identification, or whatever. Love the kid on the far right who stepped down then back up again when the kids were waiting to cross. HOLY IMPATIENCE!
There was also that animated PSA on Sesame Street about street crossing safety! I thought it was pretty funny when the Joker gets bumped by a car (for not crossing the right way) he just slides along in the street on his heels! Haha! I wonder if that Bat cycle with the sidecar was the same one the Black Widow (Tallulah Bankhead) in her episode when she pulls up to the bank to rob it?
Love that little Sesame Street cartoon! Sadly, the fine folks at the Children's Television Workshop hit me with a copyright claim when I tried to include it in an earlier video. 😕
Yvonne was already a “name” having done movies and television for several years. This was Burt’s first big thing. So it stands the reason that she would be paid more. not to mention they were trying to save the show from declining ratings by adding her.
I was hoping to see the Gleem toothpaste commercial. You could send away for an autographed B&W picture of Batman & Robin. My mom got us one and it hung on our dining room wall. Sadly, when we packed up and moved from New Jersey to Florida in 1968, the picture remained on the wall. 😭
@@jdsundstrom There is an old black and white commercial featuring Alan Napier as Alfred. It was for Fact Toothpaste and you can send in part of the toothpaste box to receive two posters of Batman & Robin. It's available on UA-cam.
2:13. This commercial here reminds me of how the old Brooklyn Dodger fans would have to dodge the trolleycars as they navigated the streets of Brooklyn en route to Ebbets Field, hence the nickname Trolley Dodgers, before shortening it to 'Dodgers' which the team continues to use to this day.
Great video and I have seen most of them before but one thing stands out in the equal pay ad batgirl says she works for Batman but in the series there she actually didn’t there was no connection between Batman and batgirl outside of the suits both being batsuits and i remember seeing once on UA-cam an abc network preview that used the cast in Gordon’s office

Yep. I remember the 1984 Zayre commercial - although it didn't have Adam West and Burt Ward in it (the actual actors were the two that competed for the roles in 1965, including Lyle Waggoner, who would star alongside Lynda Carter on Wonder Woman in the 1970s.) But it was also misleading by saying the store was open 24 hours until Christmas. Zayre closed at 6 pm on Christmas Eve. Store was actually open nonstop 24 hours beginning on Black Friday until its 6 pm closing time Christmas Eve.
I remember there was an old joke in the television industry about the safest place to be in Hollywood if a nuclear war started. And the answer was ABC because they never had a hit. Batman changed that
The ABC promo for the show at 3:40 I remember SO well! I was 5 years old and a huge fan of the show, I never missed it! 7:30 pm Wednesday and Thursday on channel 7 KABC Los Angeles.
2:52 This reminds me of the time Winston Churchill visited NY City in 1931 & was struck by an oncoming automobile, apparently he looked the wrong way before crossing, (he looked right). Cars in G.B. drive on the left, Batman knew when he went to England, Mr Churchill obviously forgot, we drive on the right in the United States. “Mario Contasino, was an unemployed mechanic from Yonkers who, on December 13, 1931, accidentally hit the future Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Winston Churchill, while driving a car. Churchill was attempting to cross a busy New York City street at the time, and forgot to look in the direction of the oncoming traffic.”
Burt Ward did two seasons of the TV show, plus the Batman movie. Yvonne Craig, who was never a major star, comes along for season three and gets more money than Burt. Was she dating the executive producer or the head of ABC?

Dick Gautier was best known for his role of Hymie the robot on Get Smart, even though he only appeared in six episodes.
Yvonne Craig used to joke that the reason Adam West didn’t do the commercial was because he just didn’t want women to be paid the same as men! 😂
5:16 That PSA also has the return of William Dozier as narrator!
And Dick Gautier filling the Batsuit.
