  • Welcome to our introduction video on how to apply Van der Waal surf grip pads to your surfboard. We take a look at why Van der Waal pads are a great alternative to traditional surf wax, then let you know about all the tools you’ll need to clean and prep your surfboard before learning how to apply the new pads to your board.
Grab yourself a pack of Van der Waal surf grips from freezeproshop.com
Mark is Freeze Pro’s surf buyer, and he’ll be your guide as he goes right through the process with his very own board.
There are a few benefits to the Van der Waal grips over traditional wax.
Firstly, they should last as long as your board, so you won’t have to keep applying them over and over again like you do with traditional wax.
One Van der Waal pad is good in all conditions, so you don’t need to change them if you go on a trip to warmer or colder waters than your local spot.
They don’t pick up dirt or hair like wax does, and they’re made of a clear plastic, so you’ll still be able to see that sick board design that you love so much. You won’t have the problem of Van der Waal pads melting, sticking to everything else you own and making a mess like wax does either.
They’re more environmentally friendly than wax too. Even though they’re plastic, they’re designed to last a long time, rather than petroleum-based wax which is reapplied all the time.
    To get started, you’ll need…
    - All the fins taken off your board
    - The leash taken off your board
    - A pack of Van der Waal surf grips (17, 21, 25 or 30)
    - A wax comb or scraper (try our own recycled Freeze Pro Shop comb)
    - Wax remover fluid
    - A selection of bits of old t-shirt or a few rags
    - A tape measure
For starters, do it somewhere warm if you can - this will help the wax to melt slightly and be easier to scrape off. Follow these steps…
    1. Remove your fins and leash
    2. Take your tape measure and measure from the back of your board (or the front of your tailpad) along the stringer, making a note of where your front foot usually stands. You should be able to judge this from the wax that’s already on your board, but if you can’t, then just jump on your deck and work out where your front foot would generally be.
    3. Use the wax comb to scrape the board clean of wax (be careful not to damage your deck).
    4. Pour a little wax remover fluid onto the deck and use your first piece of old t-shirt or rag to wipe off the bulk of the wax residue
    5. Use the next piece of t-shirt or rag to remove the final residues of wax and wax remover
    6. If you need to, then give the deck a final clean and dry with a completely clean rag, just to make sure that all of the wax remover fluid is gone
    7. Measure again along the stringer from the back of the board to find the centre point of your front foot - this is where you’ll place the first Van der Waal pad.
    8. Peel off the back and stick it down using the stringer to help keep it straight.
    9. Tear off the template from the Van der Waal box.
    10. Using the template as a guide, work outwards and back along your board from the centre pad, making sure you’re as neat as possible.
TIP: Don’t fully stick each pad down straight away, touch it down lightly at first so that you can realign it or straighten things up if you need to.
    11. Once you have the bulk of the deck covered, you may want to cut some grip pads in half to take up space next to the rails of the board.

I applied this stuff to 2 of my boards and ended up removing it. It was ok while wearing a wetsuit and boots but in warmer weather it ripped skin off my knees and feet when I had no protection. The manufacturers money back guarantee is bullshit. Yeah they answered my emails and asked for a receipt but then they conveniently (for them) never responded.

Waxing, de-waxing/removing and recycling the wax is therapeutic.

Can you use it on a soft board? Thank you.

Hey DirectorWD40, good question! I think if your board has a sealed smooth surface to the deck then they would stick, but if it's more of a traditional foamie, with a porous foam top, then it might not stick properly. If you let us know which board you have then we might be able to tell you more. Thanks for the quetion! Hope this help. Team Freeze

Doesn't really help if I have a design on my board.
Becouse the grips are whiter...not transparent

Why don't you place them wet, like I do with hexatraction, as in ua-cam.com/video/1QPyDSzUsBI/v-deo.html
It is much easier to apply, as you can reposition them, and you dont get air bubbles under them

Thanks Cooolas! Van der Waal don’t say to use water though, so neither do we. Our advice is - go with the instructions on the packet! 😊
