I was just thinking about a project just like this! To build a competitive backup car for as cheap as possible and then found this. Talk about perfect timing lol. Thanks for doing this video and keep up the good work bud.
First I love the build, the extra mile you went with the cerakote is sick. Secondly that industrial music sample is perfection for this type of video content. Bravo.
Seems this is the best way to drift RC. Seeing how pretty much everyone swaps out 75% of the parts from RTRs.. doubling or tripling costs. Might as well pick and choose parts from the get go.
True! Also, purchasing flashy parts doesn't usually help with performance, unless it has more adjustability as a result. Shiny parts do look great, though!
I want to add a very positive comment on Turtle Lab’s portable workstation he features on his videos . I purchased one and so have done a few car/trike builds using it. I find it a very enjoyable workstation, conveniently placing the tools in front of you and even capturing accidentally dropped items during the course of the build. I went with the steel for toughness and the ability to use magnetized lights anywhere on the workstation. I ordered the max setup for everything to take advantage of all the capacity it offers. I find this workstation setup a really nice addition to RC working table setup and really adds to my RC build/maintenance enjoyment . A+ on the workstation Turtle Labs!
I bought a used Sakura D5s as a second car. I replaced the shock absorbers, balends, steer arms and .. love that chassis 🙂 RMX is now the second chassis.
So I've learned a lot thru my different adventures in rc. Built alot of crawlers, bashers, got back into airbrushing the body's again. And I have several different road cars at this point. Vxl 4tec, an old tc4, and a carbon and aluminum, belt drive tc6. I'm considering turning the tc6 into a drifter(gut the front drive line and build my own angle kit. I have no idea how it's going to turn out, but I have a welder, and ideas. This thing looks awesome man.
After going down this RC drift road, from other disciplines of RC (I also made a "drift" car from a TC3 about 20 years ago. 4wd powerslider, really). I would recommend just getting a proper drift chassis. It really does make a difference. If you go with a modified touring car, it may not ever drive very well, and you may get discouraged quickly.
@@turtlelaboratories I get it, but it's likely to spend more time on the shelf than actually driving it. Same as the drag car I built. I want a drifter, but I'd rather have a losi LMT right now. Where I live I would use the monster truck alot more than any road cars
Great build! I have been working on something similar - a vehicle that can be 100% RTR for less than the price of off-the-shelf RTR vehicles. Unfortunately, I have not quite found the right combo.
Boost and turbo increase motor timing after a certain threshold that you set within the ESC, using a program box. This gives an instant increase in speed to overcome longer sweeps, or to correct a mistake, and it sounds cool! You will want a motor that can withstand the higher timing, and it isn't to be used all the time. Not all ESCs are capable of boost and turbo. The one used on this car is one of the cheapest ESCs capable, and it is actually a very nice unit, too.
If you listen to the video with the sound on, I explain it all. The Cerakote manual is very strict about the parts being very clean, so I made sure I gave it a good effort of making all the parts clean.
@@turtlelaboratories no need to be sarcastic?? Not exactly a good way to bring people to your channel I was asking a genuine question and I did listen to the video with sound on. I’m from the uk so I had no idea what u said and thought id ask.

I currently like this over my MST, because it's so much cheaper and performs as well, after some tuning. It's a super great platform, especially for the money!
Hey guys, another question, do all the parts come with wires or are those purchased separately. If so, is there a full parts list where I can get everything
It will depend on that electronics you go with. Many times, and ESC will come with some wires attached, but sometimes they don't. You can get silicone insulated wire on amazon. Make sure you get the proper gauge for the amperage you will be running!
I can't figure out the engine plate mount... It looked like you put all 3 screws on the right side? The manual says to feed an 18mm screw from the left side and use the locking nut on the right side... How did you do this?
Please, compare this to the mst and yokomo Don't know what to get..... I have heard that the yokomo is the highest quality but it is also the most expensive..... Is the Sakura more reliable than the mst?
i just ordered this kit, just read it cant fit regular shorty lipos, you need to find 18.5 mm height lipos, can you confirm regular 25mm high shorty lipos dont fit even with spacers?
Thank you! I typically use 2-3 cameras for my videos. It's the only way I think I can keep the footage dynamic, so it isn't just the same view all the time.
@@turtlelaboratories I just built a different chassis and was told it's trash and I need a mid/rear motor...so here I am. The cerakote finish was very cool 👍
@yuzen402 $25 from home depot. Doesn't need to be anything special to work, just takes a little practice. Rcgirl and holmeshobbies have great vids on soldering.
I honestly think there is far more value with the D5. The Facebook community is real strong and innovative in the D5 group, too. I like my MST, but wish I had started with the D5 instead.
i am not a professional RC driver. More of a recreational driver. However, I have seen Sakura D5 cars podium at events from internet coverage. In my opinion, any of the top manufactured chassis' can be tuned to perform well, and it is more about the Driver's ability than the components on the car. Don't get me wrong, higher dollar components are typically better, but Driver performance can take all.
the sakura isnt cheapest. to make it ready to tun from chassis 750€ mst rmx rtr brushed 450€ mst rmx rtr brushless 500€ they are insane good quality parts balanced tested and adjusted from factory. sakura even has a more fragile chassis to be more expensive.
My goal wasn't to build a professional comp rig at this price, but to build a much better car than the cost of an RTR. With that said, people do win competitions with the D5. It's a solid chassis.
Hey im new to the drift rc community ive been researching what i should get as my first car, i wad gonna get a rtr but i firgured i wanted something i could tune better to my likings. Anyway i was wondering if the shocks come with the oil/silicon or whatever the goowey liquid it is, just to make sure? Edit: grammar
They come with the clear, and colorless, shock oil, though many run without any. You will need to order some "green slime", however, to lube the shock oring.

Thank you! It's pretty darn close, if you get a cheaper body. If I ran a 10BL60 ESC without the boost/turbo, it would come in even closer.
Hey I’m new to the rc drifting hobby, what is turbo and boost exactly? What is it used for? Do you need a specific motor and esc for it?
Boost and turbo increase motor timing after a certain threshold that you set within the ESC, using a program box. The motor esc contoller does Come whit the frame ??
It does not. The chassis kit contains only what you need to make a rolling chassis. All electronics need to be purchased separate.
What did you do before the sprayed the parts like the bucket stuff is that necessary? I’m new to all this lol

Awesome build, was looking for a solid budget build for my birthday and I’ve just found it. A quick question is what battery would you run on this.

Anyone know we’re I can get brake disc and calipers for this chassis?
I see the price at the end is $325. What was the price with battery/wiring/radio and reciever set, etc?

You may be able to get different bodies to fit with adjustable offset wheels, then you can dial the gap in to how you would like it.
I wonder how many of these parts could be 3D printed and reliable🤔
I don't consider most 3D printed items to be of a high strength. The kit is already so cheap, why even bother?
