They were a good band. In their prime they were phenomenal. But this song is unbelievable. One of the best songs of all time, if you ask me. The peak of Indie music.
they're still a band and their newest album is fantastic. i would highly recommend seeing them on tour.
best kept secret in rock music is doug martsch
Hell yeah!!! I'm glad the 90s underground is finally getting recognized by reactors. Lots of great stuff to dig into. The 90s didn't suck, we were just force-fed pop crap instead of the good stuff.
Agreed, man. I'm hoping to find some stuff from their first album on reacts in the future.
The 90s has most of my favourite music
OMG I cannot believe you are doing this. Me and my daughter love it. No one ever knows it! We have introduced them to loads of people. Putting phones on NOW!
I’ve lived in Boise since 1984. I’ve known Doug for a long time….not closely by any means. He has always been a grounded and stand-up good guy. Love his music…
Built to Spill is an awesome band, with a deep discography. I think you’re gonna dig these guys. Doug Martsch is a great guitarist & plays some really interesting, musical leads.
Eargasmic. You should do the album which is great too. Lyrically very clever ("You have become a fraction of the sum..."). Gorgeous.
The middle and the front
I’m a huge Built To Spill fan!!! ❤️❤️👍👍
Built to Spill is a great band. I'm glad you did this one. I just found out recently that Doug was in another band I knew about. Built to Spill are more than this poppy song. Anyway, Doug was in Halo Benders. They have a fun song called Don't Touch My Bikini.
Oh man, glad you discovered Halo Benders! Calvin Johnson has such a unique voice lol. I think there are a couple modest mouse songs where he does background vocals if you're into them.
Check out the band Treepeople...a harder edged Dug Martsch.
Wonderful song. Wonderful album.
90s recommendations:
Jawbox- savory
Quicksand- fazer
Sunny day real estate- pillers OR in circles
Hum- stars
Excellent recommendations!!
The albums Keep it Like a Secret, Perfect From Now On, and the Normal Years...... Those 3 albums are all phenomenal in their own way.
I’ve been listening to this album since it was released, but the one track I consistently return to is “You Were Right”. It’s not so jangly as this one. It’s more riffy and dynamic, with a greater variety of guitar tones, more intense drumming, and memorable lyrics.
Thanks for this. One of my absolute FAVORITE guitar rock albums and this is a beautiful centerpiece. Criminally under known to most alt rock fans. The layers. The atmosphere. The really clever “math-based” lyrics. Excellence.
Reminded me a little of when I was into Nada Surf back in the early 2000s. Quite similar vocal sound.
As someone that loves and listens to a lot of music, you will appreciate their song, You Were Right, from the same album. I love their previous album, Perfect From Now On.
My kids always tell me that Built to Spill is a vibe with creative lyrics. Doug is a legit guitarist. Such a wonderful catalog of music. Great choice!
This is a gorgeous song I recommend to people all the time. It's like Hendrix playing Mozart.
Built to Spill is a brilliant band. 3 guitars in nicely orchestrated guitar parts, one usually playing slide (just Doug on the album, 3 guitarists live). And clever lyrics. Early indie music.
And their current lineup slaps as well. Just a three piece now with Doug handling guitar by himself. They sound amazing and the energy from the new drummer and new bassist are insane
@@Dragic27 I did see them this past tour. I was more impressed with Prism Bitch that opened for them, and the band of Doug's new drummer. I was a little disappointed in the missing orchestrated sound of his old songs.
Built to Spill is an awesome band, they have a bunch of great albums including their newest one that they just put out in the fall of 2022. Doug Martsch's solo album is also fantastic
Just a small comment on a change you made. I thought it would work, but I cannot understand a word you are saying while the music is playing. A smile or a thumbs up, or playing an air instrument pretty much conveys satisfaction.
I had never heard of this group. I was expecting art rocky too, but the indie sound is quite cool.
Great song, great band, GREAT MISTAKEN reaction lol. Listen to some of their songs off their, Perfect from now on album.
I cant believe that I haven't recommended this band to you! I was super late to them and love them so much that I'll see them everytime they come to town. Doug is Boise's guitar hero... DO IT DOUG!!! Keep going with this album along with Ancient Melodies and There is no Enemy
Beneath the hard, glossy, surface of 'pop'music, lie the true gems!!! You dig and dig and expose the real treasure, you dig? 👍 Nice the guitar work was very tasty!😊✌️
I was just listening to the Built to Spill album this song comes from ("Keep It Like A Secret") and I thought to myself "JustJP would LOVE this album!" So I searched to see if you had ever reacted to any of their songs - and found this. Although this is a great song, I know your tastes and I wouldn't suggest it to you as a first Built to Spill song to hear. But now I'll watch the video to see what you think... By the way, Keep It Like A Secret is one of my FAVORITE albums of all time. Cheers!
This song got me through such a hard time in my life, I'm still going through it, but this song was my jump to happiness, it let me escape and let time go without me, just for 5 minutes. Worth it
Definitely recommend Center of the Universe off this album, and I Would Hurt a Fly also by Built to Spill. Some great stuff.
One of my all-time favorite songs from indie gods Built To Spill. I especially appreciated your interpretation of the lyrics.
Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Pavement and Neutral Milk Hotel all made up the crux of the 90s indie rock scene. Just my personal opinion, but I believe Modest Mouse were the most captivating artist out of the four. Their first 3 records are very worth your while and make for a very deep and compelling listen…
Yo La Tengo??
Built to Spill and Doug's previous band Treepeople are the gift that keeps giving. Check out the collaboration with fellow Boise band Caustic Resin.
Top ten band of mine. They are B+ to A+ throughout their catalog. Do this whole album
This band is insanely good live. You're imagined commenter has great taste
Amazing band! Awesome to see new people get into new genres!
Guit-armada is how I describe this album ... most of their songs have 2-4 guitar parts weaving together, complementing each other and creating a mesmerizing tapestry of sound. Their songs usually have more "parts" and a little more intricate. This song is probably their most popular, probably because they stick to the same chords over and over again, which is (as you say) pretty typically indie. Try "Time Trap" or "Temporarily Blind" from this album, as they are much more interesting (IMO).
Never heard this song or this band before but it sounds good. Reminds me of something else that I can't put my finger on right now.
They were a huge influence on Modest Mouse. It reminded me of Dinosaur Jr, but they were around the same time.
Great find. I've never heard of them before either but this is a real good one. Here's a band and song for the comments if it ever needs to be looked up. The band is 'John & Mary'. The song is "The Azalea Festival". It's a real gem, from 1993, if I recall the year correctly. It's a band not many know. They're Canadian.
Still want to push for the band Wolf People and their song "Castle Keep". I keep asking only because I think you'll dig it.
Do a super delve. They have so many songs that will grow on you super quick.
You like indie? Scott Ploufs former band was called The Spinanes, a 2 piece group, drums and guitars (female vox) great group. Check out Noel, Jonah, and Me.
I don't know "Indie Core" and Alternative Rock is so broad I don't know what that means anymore. I'd say welcome to the land of Shoe Gazers!!!!
Built to spill is my favorite band, the singer Doug subliminally sent it to you in your thoughts haha just kidding but it’s an awesome song
Interesting comparisons. For me it reminds me of The Weakerthans from their second and third albums. Needless to say, I enjoyed it.
He gets it. At 6:24 he gets it.
🤗
You should listen to Dsco by Sweet Trip
I enjoyed this. Not too big into the 90s generally. Thanks for sharing.
Could the recommendation have come via Twitter? I know I personally have suggested reactions for you that way, rather than in UA-cam comments.
Hard to judge on one track but not bad at all. Better than some on the channel that some gush over, which can be said of some I love. What are you gonna do…
Name reminds me of Built For Speed, Stray Cats… she’s a rockabilly philly with her top down, running that rod all over the town.
Ahem…
Not bad.
Here's a musician I know (probably unwise to expand on that in the open Internet), and some of his music. ua-cam.com/video/1ZM6ubn_hoc/v-deo.html
More to the point, that cover has a distinctly "Guided by Voices" look to it. (I forget the name of that type of art - where you cut out and paste together things from different images to make a new one ... ah ... collage. The cover is a collage, which is how Bob Pollard of GBV improvised their first covers, and then kept on doing so even after they had money to pay for something more industry-standard.) It's possible that they're inspired by a certain Robert Pollard.
If you have 1:05 to spare, you can treat yourself, secretly, to *Kicker of Elves* if you like. ua-cam.com/video/X0dXyY-VFsA/v-deo.html
From their lo-fi years (first due to cash shortages, and then, for a while, as an aesthetic - Bob saying he was good at effing things up ) *The Hard Way*. ua-cam.com/video/Ge5hQVPw5R8/v-deo.html (I think I prefer GBV, but if Built to Spill really were inspired by them, they'd probably say "of course!").
There isn't one fixed GBV recipe. Sometimes they hit, sometimes they miss. When they hit, it flies; when they miss, well they miss, wait a bit and they'll hit the spot again. Like when *The Batman Sees the Ball* . ua-cam.com/video/EccnH8j6apQ/v-deo.html
(The young Bob Pollard was a pretty good baseball player - whatever that is. Someone said he "pitched a no hitter against Penn State", whatever that means. But he spent most of his youth as a fourth grade teacher, so must have been just short of professional level, by the sound of it. Doesn't matter. He probably would've spent that time dreaming of rock 'n roll, either way. Actually sometimes you get people on their videos saying he was their teacher. Used to sing to them!)
I don't care for the name of the band. Sounds more like a name of a song.
I like the name of the song.
The music is pretty cool. Nice stuff.
I love the name of the band. It fits them perfectly.
Didn't love it, but liked the guitar. Sustained notes are always nice.
Fairly standard jangly, indie pop... Not unpleasant, when you're in the mood for such, but nothing really standout. I imagine it'd make pretty safe background music if you were holding a party for friends of varied musical tastes. I don't see this offending anybody. Course it's not exactly gonna bring the house down either...
Man this comment is so wrong. How is this NOT special? One of the best written and catchy songs in Indie pop. Some things I just don't get and this comment is one of em, how can anyone think this??? Don't you hear these phenomenal progressions and subtilities? The great solos inbetween? The amazing main riff?
@@justsomejusstsome8994 it's pretty good, for indie. That genre leaves plenty of us cold.
@@justsomejusstsome8994 I wouldn't say my comments 'wrong', just different maybe 🙂 It was easy on the ear but lacked any real excitement/originality. That, and I just feel like I've been listening to stuff like this most of my life.
A pretty generic 4-chord song that drags a bit too long. I do like the style, though, and that saves it for me. I might listen again sometime. 🤷♂️
Hmm, indie does very little for me.
Meh. Not interested in this. Next....
Aye. I've always been puzzled by people who gush over songs that send me to sleep.
