In one way or another, every prototype - by design or function - represents the future of the series and the teams that created them. A certain play style is also highlighted with each. Here's how I see it...
    *[WARNING: LONG COMMENT FOLLOWS!]*
-The *FEISAR Prototype, Speed Class,* was built with precision in mind. Expert pilots who know their racing lines get the most out of this ship, perfect for a team whose greatest strength in all the other games is its strong handling. To me, the nature of its high speed and well-balanced nature as well as its overall design (the wings especially) invoke the silhouette of the FEISAR FX350 Fury design, a ship similarly well balanced and one of the best ships in the game, in my opinion at least, due to the high handling combined with HD Fury's track design being much more technical overall. (Also, a neat little detail is that the speedometer for this ship exclusively has a unique design from the others, filling up the bottom cells with yellow whenever it gains speed from speed pads and invoking the A.G.R.C. era FEISAR logo.)
-The *Qirex Prototype, Fighter Class,* invokes the aggressive nature of many a Qirex pilot and player. The self-reloading minigun calls to mind for me the Super Weapon of FEISAR in Wipeout 64, its origins coming from a cheat in Wipeout 2097 which gave any ship an infinite minigun with similar destructive power to the minigun's high damage output. Perhaps it speaks to the lore of Qirex's financial backing that their firepower is superior to all else...
-The *Pir-hana Prototype, Speed Class,* is by far the fastest ship in the entire game - but it is hindered by some major flaws: No acceleration module, and no steering rack. The team's pursuit of perfection started here, by pursuing the distinction that made their archetype in the future: pure speed. Whoever at the company thought it a good idea to strip out the weapons system instead of *everything else* come 2097's P.666 v.Prototype was probably on the right train of thought after what I assume were the many incidents which led to Pir-hana's withdrawal from AG racing, and in this sense, the Prototype calls forward to their introduction by release order where they similarly lacked something crucial but had awe-inspiring performance everywhere else to make up for it. With this ship, the airbrakes are your friend, but much of 2048's course design isn't - maybe that's why I find it easiest to use in Altima... and I think that's no coincidence.
-The *AG Systems Prototype, Agility Class,* is the only one among the five to be an Agility prototype. Its handling is second to none, and the design element of diverting engine power into the airbrakes make it capable of performing some insane feats not replicated anywhere else - a double barrel roll with an extended boost, extended sideshifts (relative to other Agility Class ships, at least), and a Combat Spin in Race events - even if you take it to Combat where that function is no longer unique, I believe it's the only ship in 2048 that can spin as fast as in HD Fury's Eliminator Mode. This experimental nature of feats no other ship is capable of invokes the pioneering of the team and its founder, and so too did their shields - taking more damage than any other ship, but also recovering extremely quickly when absorbing weapons, perhaps a testament to their inconsistency as a racing team until 2197. The design of the ship features a unique wing and canard setup with an exposed engine block, which I find neat as it invokes the silhouette of its counterparts in the FX300, FX350 and FX400 - AG Systems ship design since Pure has been one of my favourite designs in all of Wipeout since they started using it, and I'm glad that 2048 called forward to it somehow.
-The *Auricom Prototype, Fighter Class,* is perhaps the most obvious future inspiration. The wide, dual hull style invokes the silhouette of its F5000 counterpart, a design that would later be refined into the slimmer, block-esque dual hull design we are familiar with starting with the F7200. The way its weapons system works calls to mind how old Wipeout games prior to Pure allowed you to discard weapons if you did not want to use it, but not absorb them for health.
... If you got this far, you can tell I'm too passionate about this.

You sure as heck are passionate.
I do appreciate the prototype ships. They are ships that posses very different properties in comparison to the standard Speed, Fighter, and Agility craft each team has. These prototype ships tend to require the pilot to race in a way the normally wouldn't.
Especially the Pir-Hana Prototype, which is the ship where you are constantly playing with the Airbraker trophy in mind. This ship is only for the masters of airbraking, and for the crazy pilots. Even I don't quite understand how to handle such a craft on courses such as Rockway Stadium when you can only airbrake and never slow down (like in Zone).
I appreciate how each prototype ship is so different and somewhat stays true to the team. For example, Qirex tends to be a more weapons-heavy team, and nothing would be better than having a strong minigun without the need to get any other weapons. Qirex today (in the FX350) is more of a balanced team, but it still held an aggressive nature in earlier racing leagues.
The FEISAR Prototype is meant to represent a team that is mostly balanced and great for beginners. The FEISAR Prototype is great for time trials where you are focused on taking the best racing line. You might need to adjust a little in order to get the speed pads, which is key to keeping the prototype at its very best. I appreciate the speedometer for the FEISAR prototype as you are clearly able to see how much power has been built up in the ship and whenever you lose power after hitting a wall or finishing a lap. (All prototype ships have an additional graphic for the team, but FEISAR's is the most unique. In fact, a part of the FEISAR 2048 logo is used for the left part of the speedometer. Very nice attention to detail.)
I actually didn't know that the Agility ships had slightly extended side shifts. Of course, I knew the AG-Systems Prototype had extended side shifts, which could be good or bad. Unfortunately there were not many good spots to use the flip feature in races besides Combat. Although, you could still use the ship to fire head-on against other ships by flipping during races if you really wanted to. For some reason, I felt like the double barrel roll boost of the AG-Systems Prototype isn't the best thing since you need even more time to execute the maneuver. Although, for courses with big jumps like Altima, it can work out pretty well.
It's quite sad that the Auricom Prototype is so dreadfully bad in this game. If only it recovered health quicker, or it was fast, or it could pick up defensive weapons. Even in Combat, this ship might not be the best choice. At least you will never be slowed down by a pesky bomb or rockets. This is the only dual-hull ship in 2048, and it is quite a big one at that. While it wasn't the prettiest designs, more ships started using dual-hull designs as new racing leagues began.
I'm actually not sure what else to comment about since you brought up most of the points that make each prototype ship feel very special in their own unique ways. I appreciate your time for writing this; it goes to show how much Studio Liverpool cared about giving each team an identity, along with their prototype ships. Thanks for your insights!

@@systeminspired [Coughs] While *abandoning* their online features back in the PS Vita native WipEout 2048 version... [Coughs]

I'm guessing the online features were abandoned because of Wipeout Omega Collection. The same thing happened with Wipeout HD Fury. It's quite unfortunate really, so many records and leaderboards have likely disappeared without a trance. We still have the Omega leaderboards though, and sometimes new records pop up every now and then.

The city does have nice atmosphere, like how we see the moments in such science fiction films that we love like RoboCop, The Fifth Element & Blade Runner.

For some reason the pir-hana prototype race isn’t showing up on my game, is there some way of unlocking it? I have elite passed every other event in 2048

(No offense but...) *The Pir-hana Prototype ship SUCKS SO BAD!* (mostly the *handling* and how it has about 5% of turning left or right without using airbreaks).
Seriously, even the Pir-hana Speed ship would be a better choice than the Prototype ship. I mostly favor a WipEout ship's stats having nearly the same as a Feisar Speed ship's. Any Speed ship that is the same as the Pir-hana Prototype ship....well one would have a hard time trying to maneuver it in tracks like Unity-Square. [sympathetic chuckling at the last one]

The main gimmick of the Pir-hana Prototype is that it mainly relies on its airbrakes to navigate circuits. It's definitely an interesting gimmick and will probably be difficult to get used to. For those that occasionally slow down while going through corners, the Pir-hana Prototype will be more difficult to manage; you can never slow down when you're piloting it. It is true that the Pir-hana Speed can definitely compete with the Prototype, especially on B Class races. Of course, the Prototype ship would excel in straighter courses like Empire Climb, but then you realize it might be more beneficial to use the FEISAR Prototype.
The Pir-hana Prototype will only excel under the hands of a skilled pilot. Even I can't say for certain that I can use this craft well, but in certain cases, it can really do well and outspeed other ships. Not always, but sometimes.
