4:40 she even admits the slaughter was something she would not pointlessly participate in. We deserve to have a non lethal option to keep her around or a fleshed out Gobbo questline to match the tieflings
This is a such common misconception about Minthara. She is not judging, she’s just curious. She compares them to rats the very next line and says, “It is as good reason as any”. She doesn’t hate that she had to kill the refugees. She hates that she had no choice. But now she has it. And make no mistake - she would follow us and kill as many more as we want. And this is just one of the reasons why she’s such a great character.
@@MrTarakanishershe repeatedly states she takes no pleasure in pointlessly harming others. She even kind of judges you for partaking in the massacre whilst seemingly still beeing of sound mind
I think an alternate story should be possible. One where you capture her for information and in interrogation break her bond to the absolute. Then she joins you for revenge it’s kinda weird the game forcing you to massacre the grove or the goblins. It’s more of a you’re going to kill a bunch of people which are you more comfortable with. An alternate route would make sense as well.
she can't join you even if you do that, because the main reason she does is that Ketheric and the Absolute judge her and then try to erase her mind. That's when her devotion gives a crack, you only have to push it a bit with removing the absolute's mind grip.
Minthara, of all companions perhaps except laezel, is an utter realist. She sees opportunity and takes it, sees people as she is aware. It’s not glorious, but it is honest
she is lustful for power and have delusions of grandeur. I genuinely fail to see any quality in her besides for those who want a 100% evil playthrough.
@@IRedpunkShe's a Menzoberranzonian (seems like that should be the proper term for "one born/raised in Menzoberranzan,") of House Baenre. That's as cutthroat as it gets. I don't think she's inherently any worse than Jarlaxle, & he's one of the most popular characters in the Forgotten Realms.
she's definitely self-aware, but still power-hungry and ruthless. There is something likable in how she carries herself as a drow aristocracy and she does have some flashes of vulnerability if you try to pursue romance... but somehow that's not enough to make her a truly likable character. Maybe if they had given her more development in Act 3, it would have been different, but alas
That's not honesty, just a self-fulfilling prophecy of using people and treating everyone the way she's used to. Why do people try to equate complete cynicism with "realism" somehow?
When she said Lae'zel's rebellion is childish, I'm ded. I love the part of her that just sees the situation as is. It's surface level comment, but it's a damn good one, a funnier one at that
Just make it so she appears at moonrise if you knock her out in the goblin camp. Easy fix for a complex problem. Would make sense as well for her to be the one standing trial.
you should be able to keep her alive even if you detroy the goblin camp, by act 2 she has the same goals as you theres no reason to kill her. there should be a scene you use the artifact to give her free will back or something idk
I think it would be nice if, when she is asking for the location of the druid's grove if you successfully deceive her that she would go to investigate, leaving you to wipe out Ragzlin and Gut and the Tieflings are able to escape, which lets her join later.
Minthara is best companion. Logic > emotion. A calculated mind is something every team needs. Waiting till the patch to fix her voice lines and then ima murder the Grove and move onto act 2. Playing my alt until that time.
You know most of what I've seen of baldur's gate left me surprisingly disinterested, but I think Minthara might lure me into finally giving it a shot. Hard to say no to a powermad drow mistress with dreams of ruling eternally alongside her scaly serial killer bf.
Minthara is best girl, but it does seem like her story concludes after the battle at Moonrise Towers. It just becomes a "help me kill a list of people" storyline. The evil storyline in general seems like an afterthought.
i love her so much, she has so much depth to her character, i really do wish you could just leave her alive after killing the other goblin leaders. I tried to kill them all but her and free her at the tower but the tieflings didnt make it, even with having the shadow druids step down and allowing the tieflings to stay. Shes had a rough life and i think the player character leading her towards redemption is nice idea
4:30 - this is why I play with a mod that brings Minthara to act 2 even if killed. This is one bad choice on Larian side - the only way to discover she's not a fantasy Hitler murdering for no real reason is to murder tieflings and druids for no valid reason (since character-wise with no prior knowledge either can cure you, siding with "good" guys minimizes risk of being betrayed in the future and if news leaks out we'd be shunned in civilised societies) essentially being stupid evil.
the real tragedy is that this performance will be missed by those who neither mod nor tolerate doing what is required to bring her over. Her character is just too good and well performed in contrast to the rest that it is a shame that some people wills imply miss out on it.
I wish you could get her without siding with the goblins. I dont mind killing the Tieflings but if you do it then ACT2 is kinda barren and you miss out on fantastic items. You just lose too much and she is still bugged.
@@TheDani3losYou can't fix the shadow lands, get halsin obviously, can't get any items the tieflings will give you (the robe from alfira is GG), can't fix karlach, unfulfilled quest archs in act 2. It even follows you into act 3. This is just some of what you lose killing the grove. I absolutely hate this choice they give you....
@@VengefulMaverick Tbh you don't really get any consequence for "fixing the shadow lands" aside from a small inconsequential buff in the end of the end game. Also Karlach leaves you if you side with Minthara anyway so that's a non-issue.
@@invictus7736 Fixing the shadow lands is a good thing. Plus there have been hints and signs it's spreading. As for karlach, there is dialogue between her and minthara. So they either cut another way to get her, or it's bugged. Idk. I find it kinda stupid so much content was cut.
@@VengefulMaverick It's "a good thing" only for your headcanon, because it has no effect on the game aside from the aforementioned small buff. It's basically just a tiny cutscene and that's it. Not exactly catastrophic to miss out on.
4:18 there is a unique dialogue when you didn’t kill the tieflings and still managed to recruit minthara. She instead asks why you came to moonrise towers. Its insane that the developers thought about a backup line, when you can only recruit minthara and save the tieflings with glitches/mods.
@@StargamerXD No that’s true, they do not survive act 1 if you do not finish the goblin camp, I think (either Kagha or the goblins kill them). I meant to say that it’s possible to see the dialogue you mentioned without glitches. Recruiting Minthara AND saving the tieflings is a glitch, yes.
I'd fine with it being a choice between her and Halsin, considering when you can get her, you can still lift the Shadow Curse before losing Halsin as a Companion. No need to butcher druids or tieflings, even if its as simple as sparing her and coming up into Act 2 with her before Thorm, and sparing her from that point onward to force the choice of one or the other.
Best ideas I can think of: -Option to spare some goblins, and Minthara in taking the Goblin Camp. -Option to capture her, interrogate her, and either release her, or maybe she escapes off-screen. In both above options, when you first meet Thorm, it plays the whole scene where he sentences Minthara, and you can rescue her from the dungeons (I believe that's what happens? I saw it in another video). Since Halsin joins you around this time in Act 2, you can still try and lift the Shadow Curse if you do it first, then invite Minthara and lose Halsin (though knowing Halsin? I think it'd be more likely to use the other druid companion first, lol).
Such a great character that cannot be experienced unless you go out of your way to kill a bunch of people who can help you for really no good character reason, or walk away from it all like a coward (and miss the game's best animated sex scene)
Not really, they did put in a patch that allows you to recruit her on a good run of the game. It involves provoking her by stealing or assaulting someone in her presence. But not her herself. This will put her in a temporary hostile state. Using non-lethal attacks, a toggle found in passives you can use melee to knock her out. Her state will read as Knocked out Temporary. This means she will awaken after a long rest. So do not do so until after you have killed the other two and finished the kill the goblin leadership quest you get from either Halsin or Zevlor. They will celebrate at your camp. This will resolve the quest then it's safe to long rest. She should then appear at Moonrise in the same scene as if you sided with her and killed the grove. She has to be either the first or second leader you deal with. The priestess can be dealt with easily by casting silence on her this prevents her from calling for help and beating the ever-loving crap out of her. With the goblin chief being last as he will on death agro every person in the camp including her if she hasn't been dealt with. With her being full hostile knocking her out the game will consider her dead regardless of what you do in that case. Good to make a hard save before attempting it so you do not have to restart the entire game to get back to that point.
the word iblith is used in conjuction of High Drow and meaning filth or ungood. In Arabic its the name of the Satan and in Islamic Mythology the leader of all Devils and Jinns.
In Arabic it's Iblis. Iblith is probably a borrowing from something closer to hebrew, because in Forgotten Realms there are other similar names for creatures from the Abyss, e.g. bebilith.
Mint has the best redemption story arc in the game. Check, in all of the past decade of games. And her story is not even fully available/ in the game (cut content). If you respond to her question that you enjoy killing, etc., she finds you to be repulsive. She’s not the typical “evil murderer”, far from it, she has a code. That’s why she’s “Mint.”
Is she really redeemed though. Definitely love her story and the scene of rescuing her is probably my favorite in game. But she's got the mindset of an evil dictator throughout the story, lawful evil in that shed do anything for power.
there's anything but true redemption in her story. It's clearly undercooked with what currently is there in Act 3. She still pursues power and is an evil-aligned character
She's literally just an evil genocidal murderer, (and rapist) stop simping just because she has boobs. Yes sure you can play the game any way you wish, but trying to justify how Minthara who's 100% pure evil from beginning to the end is somehow morally grey is pathetic. She's not. And that's fine.
Should be fixed soon hopefully. I finished act 1 all except for the Grove and upon looking online I realized if I continue now I may miss something Minthara related. So I saved and switch over to my alt playthrough where ima save the grove.
@@rafaljarmuszkiewicz514 ye they also said they will fix it like a bit later and depending on player reception they might even add more content for her.
At first I was sad to see Minthara doesn't have a personnal quest like Shadowheart, Astarion and Leazel. But... I realised it wasn't necessary if you play Dark Urge. Actuzlly her motivations about vengeance toward Ketheric and Orin makes her a very trustable companion because she wants exactly the same thing than you : get free from the absolute which manipulated her. I felt more implicated in my mission because of her actually because she wants to succeed with you. Like a second reason for us to succeed : Minthara needs her revenge to get free from her demons... which are the same than yours.
MY first play through I killed Minthy with the other two and continued on with Karlach romance...Second playthrough as a Diurge....and I saved Minthy and have not been disappointed...So far Minthara has been my fav Companion. they should have a DLC where you can start BG3 as her and get the events of her becoming a cultists as a prequel...and you get to see the events through act 1 and part of act 2 from her eyes.
I’m so tired of everybody saying you should be able to get her on a good play through. I don’t think you should be able to do all of the cool things on a single Playthru of a game this big. It would make all of your choices feel even more meaningless than they already are. Just deal with the fact you cannot get the evil companion you without doing the evil thing.
there is some awkwardness in the disconnect between how she's only recruitable by tavs who wanted to be evil, and the fact that she thinks you've got no excuse for helping her, but she is still a ruthless Drow noblewoman who is lawful evil at the end of the day, so if you're playing Durge, you get a dialogue option to blame the voices in your head for making you help raid the camp when she questions you, which i really like because all the other excuses are awful. "I wanted to impress you" makes your Tav look like a moron simp. Also, when you speak with Zevlor as you inform him you led the Goblin warhost to attack, he asks why, and you can say "I'm sorry, I didn't want to but I can't control it." So the best way to roleplay recruiting Minthara as someone who wouldn't be repugnant to her is a Durge who was initially going along with their dark urges, but then 180ing and resisting it after act 2 starts.
I agree in principle but the problem is that they wrote a whole redemption arc for her in the game specifically for good Tavs but on release the only way to get her as a good character was through a literal bug. Minthara was just sloppily implemented, from her character arcs even to her backstory as a Baenre, which is literally impossible if you've actually read the Forgotten Realms novels. She also says things about her own people which are inaccurate and clearly the result of Larian not knowing enough about the Forgotten Realms to write a story that connects to so many other very well established aspects of the setting. The Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 references were especially painful. I feel like this game should not have even had a connection to the first two.
I noticed a bit of a mistake in the writing. When you talk to Minthara at Moonrise she says Orin laughed as a Mindflayer stuck a tadpole in her eye, then here at camp she says Orin administered the tadpole herself.
She seems like such a fun character, it's just a shame you have to be a total psychopath to recruit her. I don't necessarily care much about the Druids in the Cove, but you just have to sacrifice so much to get her in your camp; short of an evil mindflayer run, it's too hard to rationalize joining her.
Hi guys I am starting my second playthrough soon and was wondering how to get her as a companion. I killed her without even knowing who she was lol I was wondering why this enemy npc had underwear and camp supplies pouch :D Do I need to be evil all the time to get her as companion or romance?
What Minthara is supposed to say: Minthara to Fiona Du'Varia: "Orin held me down in a cacoon of flesh, while a mind flayer forced a parasite into my brian. And she laughed at my fear. She took from me my feelings for you by force and warped them, twisted them to be about herself. To make me obediant. To make me her slave. I will find her. I will murder her. And then I will smile once more." Words of advice, never fuck with a yandere drow.
Apparently only if you ignore the Druids/Tieflings grove quest and just let it play out by itself. This way Wyll and Karlach won't blame you as you didn't participate directly. It's a valid choice to not engaging with that storyline, as it's not mandatory for the overall story.
I don't get why people keep trolling that shitte how they wanna Minthara without commiting attrocities. They are tied to her. That's how she acts. How she thinks. Take it away and it is not Minthara anymore. People just live in delusion they can "fix" everyone.
It should be noted she literally has a line where she stares that the grove was due to the parasite/absolute brainwashing. Shes evil, in the same way that astarion and laezelle are evil, she's ruthless and power hungry and has a skewed view of right and wrong relative to normal people. Its hardly some compulsive need to do massacres, nor does she join you BECAUSE you did a massacre as much as because of your character/because you save her.
@@ktkr5273 is Lae really evil though? Isn't it more about being Gith? She is as her people shaped her to be. Militaristic and at first quite narrow minded in her ways. She changes significantly if given enough attention. Of course I may be wrong, but I wouldn't consider her truly evil.
They need to fix her recruitment path, losing three npcs and being responsible for the deaths of all the small thieflings are not worth it. No character costs you even remotely as much in recruiting them so this feels like an oversight.

there are some bits and pieces in Act 3 but that's it, probably due to the infamous bug everybody is talking about. There is a video here on youtube where a modder got one of her dialogues triggered through scripting and it appears there is something of a romance in Act 3, she even confesses her "love" to MC. So we should wait for it to be fixed, and then see
After hotfix #5, larian confirmed She never be recruit by a good guys, sadge. Now waiting for modders to find a loophole themselves for the good guys :
Why ? Do you know her story exactly? that you say so? She has a bigger heart and is more empathetic and smarter than all your companions combined. You realize that? or are you just repeating what others say, judging her superficially, in fact, you are making yourself paranoid, not her.
I feel sorry for her VA, all the others getting massive kudos. And minthara is forgotten because the game design around recruiting her is fucking stupid.
I don't know why people think she's the best companion...after Act 2 she is basically mute and not nearly as involved in the story as any of the others.

Patch 5.
You don't have to do any of that, you can just ignore the grove and the goblins. If you do that you will still be able to recruit her.

Didn't get a chance to romance her. I failed a check when I got into the Goblin camp & after that, everybody had to die.😂

4:30 - this is why I play with a mod that brings Minthara to act 2 even if killed.
This is one bad choice on Larian side - the only way to discover she's not a fantasy Hitler murdering for no real reason is to murder tieflings and druids for no valid reason (since character-wise with no prior knowledge either can cure you, siding with "good" guys minimizes risk of being betrayed in the future and if news leaks out we'd be shunned in civilised societies) essentially being stupid evil.
you wait 30 seconds after she stops speaking to pick a response. my brain hurts
nah, it's relatable
the real tragedy is that this performance will be missed by those who neither mod nor tolerate doing what is required to bring her over. Her character is just too good and well performed in contrast to the rest that it is a shame that some people wills imply miss out on it.
Just knock her out in the Grove (use non-lethal damage).
She doesn't question why you killed the tieflings if they died prior to her attack.
I wish you could get her without siding with the goblins. I dont mind killing the Tieflings but if you do it then ACT2 is kinda barren and you miss out on fantastic items. You just lose too much and she is still bugged.
Can you add more details of act 2 consequences?
@@TheDani3losYou can't fix the shadow lands, get halsin obviously, can't get any items the tieflings will give you (the robe from alfira is GG), can't fix karlach, unfulfilled quest archs in act 2. It even follows you into act 3.

4:18 there is a unique dialogue when you didn’t kill the tieflings and still managed to recruit minthara. She instead asks why you came to moonrise towers. Its insane that the developers thought about a backup line, when you can only recruit minthara and save the tieflings with glitches/mods.
You can do it without glitches, you just need to ignore the Halsin questline and the goblin camp.
@@poakcastle is it up for random then if the tieflings survive? Saving them later on in moonrise gets you a lot of quest rewards.
@@poakcastle ah okay got it
I'd fine with it being a choice between her and Halsin, considering when you can get her, you can still lift the Shadow Curse before losing Halsin as a Companion. No need to butcher druids or tieflings, even if its as simple as sparing her and coming up into Act 2 with her before Thorm, and sparing her from that point onward to force the choice of one or the other.
Best ideas I can think of:
-Option to spare some goblins, and Minthara in taking the Goblin Camp.
That doesn't work anymore.

I knocked her out when I raided the goblin camp. Shoulda known she was playable!

Hers is pretty straight forward revenge on Orin.
Only if you choose the evil route.

The problem with it is is you don't gain enough to replace what you lose by recruiting her, which just discourages doing evil runs, at least for me
I agree in principle but the problem is that they wrote a whole redemption arc for her in the game specifically for good Tavs but on release the only way to get her as a good character was through a literal bug.
Her Name is Minthara "Bae"nre
I noticed a bit of a mistake in the writing. When you talk to Minthara at Moonrise she says Orin laughed as a Mindflayer stuck a tadpole in her eye, then here at camp she says Orin administered the tadpole herself.
I can fix her.
Our enemies are everywhere!
She seems like such a fun character, it's just a shame you have to be a total psychopath to recruit her.
I don't necessarily care much about the Druids in the Cove, but you just have to sacrifice so much to get her in your camp; short of an evil mindflayer run, it's too hard to rationalize joining her.
No, just knock her out in the first chapter and she will appear later in the towers.

What Minthara is supposed to say:
Minthara to Fiona Du'Varia: "Orin held me down in a cacoon of flesh, while a mind flayer forced a parasite into my brian. And she laughed at my fear. She took from me my feelings for you by force and warped them, twisted them to be about herself. To make me obediant. To make me her slave. I will find her. I will murder her. And then I will smile once more."
Words of advice, never fuck with a yandere drow.
anyone here know if theres a way to recruit her while simultaneously being able to still have Wyll and Karlach remain in your party?
Apparently only if you ignore the Druids/Tieflings grove quest and just let it play out by itself. This way Wyll and Karlach won't blame you as you didn't participate directly. It's a valid choice to not engaging with that storyline, as it's not mandatory for the overall story.
