Assuming that western music patterns apply to Arabic music is a BIG mistake.
Because each maqam (the modal system of the Arab world) behaves differently.
Here is an example: The classic shift between major and minor. Try to translate that to Arabic maqam by modulating from Ajam to Nahawand (the 'seemingly' equivalents of Major Minor in Arabic music). Your audience will cringe 😵
Simply because the major minor patten is considered to be off and it's simply an unused modulation pathway in Arabic music.
Here is another example: What is considered to be sad or happy (major minor) is completely different in Arabic music!
So what do you do instead?
You learn each maqam on it's own as a unique case and you can hear me talk more about that 10 seconds into the video.
So where to start?
You start with the core maqam building blocks that create 99% of Arabic music.
This is the most effective and authentic way to study maqam.

This was the best explanation I heard for Maqam, it is truly like a person. Some are sad, some happy and some balanced.
In Persian Maqam, the differentiation could be done even in lower levels: a branch (gooshe) which is like a specific subset of a Maqam. A Maqam which generally has heroic sound could have a subset tune which would sound very pastoral.
glad it resonated :)
I like the explanation. Now I understand why for example the Maqam in the Saudi way for example it has its own personality and character that is different from other countries like iraq or Egypt. Each country play it but in their own way. Like a dialect or a slang.
Yes it is but the feeling and the implementation is different in my opinion for example
The ajam maqam is the Major scale, the Nahawand maqam is the natural minor scale, Hijaz maqam is the phrygian dominant scale, kurd maqam is the phrygian mode, and maybe there others. Greetings
I understand Maqam is very close to Indian ragas
