Family, for me, is the worst and the best for, they're the ones that are the best hecklers. Pick a card.. they want the first or last. I learned to spread and say "choose one of these" and " you want more, sure, let's go deeper, but not too far for other people want to see what's going on". I'll even start the spread over if interrupted (depends on the trick).

Routining IS the answer. When you take the time to write a routine, you often come to the question:"What if...?"...and THEN you will add some sort of justification or move (anything) to add to that routine that will have you end with an examinable prop in your hands...a well motivated ditch or switch always handy...but it has to be a natural flowing part of your routine. My 2 (exminable) cents.

"Being ahead" is not limited to the method of an effect. Be completely ahead in all things. Nearly every dirty-ending trick that I do has additional handling to get me clean. It can be as simple as having reason to put the 'thing' in a pocket at the close. I do this, especially with coins. Gaff coins always go to the pocket before being brought back for examination... palmed coins are always either ditched or brought into play before the end.
I only perform for family friends and students (students are worse than family and friends, by far!)
    Great video, David!

Great advise. Yes, performing for family is brutal. My hardest spectator is my 7 year old grandson! I admire magicians who distract the spectator by making look like they are doing an obvious move, but in reality they are doing something completely different, leaving the spectator with no reason to ask questions.

I'm new to magic, and have only performed a few tricks for my wife and kids but one thing I was thinking of to try and switch decks easily was to start with a trick on, say, a mirage deck, and then say something like "hey, I've got a cool trick you might like" and pocket the mirage deck before pulling out Cardtoon. Cardtoon is so obviously a pre-prepared deck that it makes perfect sense for it to be a separate deck of cards, and then of course once you're done with the Cardtoon performance you would pocket that and then pull out a standard deck for a trick that gives you a clean ending. I guess this would be even better if your mirage and standard deck are the same colour / card design as it would look like you've used the same deck for the first and last tricks.

Family and friends are the most difficult - agree 👍🏻 That’s why performing for them always gives lot of insight for improving for “the real world”. If I am not sure about whether I “get away” with something I do it for the ones which are the most sceptic. There is no failure - just opportunity to learn😅
Aaaaand I started to value effects which provide an additional ungimmicked prop - potentially even as “giveaway” cementing the memory of wonder (and yes the “books of wonder” are wonderful) ❤

I agree an audience is less likely than family and friends. There is a certain distance for an audience that just doesn't exist with family.
Your comment about magicians guilt is spot on and I never thought of it.

Preparation and script should be part of every performers routine, I’m a casual performer that uses props, gimmicks etc to distract unsuspecting ‘victims’ from something that might be upsetting or irritating them….i ‘enjoy’ being able to take the ‘victim or vic’ into territory that makes them ‘wonder’…it’s a gratifying moment that satisfies me because the extra curiosity from my victim means that I’ve performed the routine effectively…they are more interested in the ‘effect’ than the problem that originally caused me to ‘engage’ with them…the ‘enjoyment’ of performing routines is knowing that I’ve stimulated someone’s mind and that’s part of what attracts me to what I do…it’s like the comedian with a nuisance ‘heckler’ you’re gonna experience more than one in your lifetime, just make them feel more uncomfortable than you for the added extra attention or curiosity and try to be as ‘candid’ as you possibly can…be creative develop a ‘one liner’ of your own for the situation…for example: sometimes wondering is more fun than actually knowing how it’s done…work it out for yourself…lol 😇

Great advice! I have been doing shows for awhile now, all of my routines are story based, thanks to my favorite books Maximum entertainment 2.0 and Scripting magic volume 1&2. My wife is my guinea pig for my performing but never wants to know how it's done but let's me know if I flash or not as she knows enough to try to catch me... My persona is such that I have to use ordinary looking props...coffee cups and beans... Silks ....ordinary rope...but your statement to do routines and not just tricks I agree 💯. Also I always try to end clean so that a lot of my props if not all, can be examined. And last most of my routines are slight of hand more than gimmicked props though I do use gimmicks that can't be handed out.

Good stuff Sir. I use test stuff to weed out the grabbers and skeptics. I find the checkers and grabbers are engaged and that is valuable. Attention can be hard to get and hold. Clean ending visual stuff will get them to expose themselves 🫢 Then you can work with that. Your point of routines verse tricks is the most important thing in my world anyway 🙏🏼👍🏼👊🏼

I cant go into detail here, but TL:DR version is, I perform for college kids at night bars with long lines. The FOCUS difficulty is extreme, but the chance for performance scars is low. Plus, the moving line makes you trim out fat of ur routine b4 they get inside club.

Learn Topit and Sleeving by Carl Cloutier. You can ALWAYS end clean and it is a master piece of magic.
Have a good tailor put it in a vest, jacket and coat and you will take your magic to a totally new level.
The question being asked is most often a lack of understanding the audience, Sankys little book of the art of magic that has no tricks is the best investment you can make for a solution.
    Great vid mate.

I begin to hand them the prop, whatever, say, "here would you like to look at this?"
when they reach for it I immediately pull back while saying, "I would but it'll ruin the flow of the show." it gets a laugh and we move on.

Gimmicks? I don't need no stinking gimmicks! 😁

Wow when you said ending clean it dawned on me of one of my routine. I would start the card svengali deck trick have there card pop up anywhere in 4 piles and the deck changes to there card and in the end I put the deck in the card box put them behind my back saying I'm bring there card to the top in reality switching to another ordinary deck with there card on top. This way they can inspect the deck. Clean ending.thats because having ordinary deck in back pocket

Let me just add little more information. Basically when doing svengali deck theres several tricks I do while useing it with another card already placed somewhere under a seat and so forth. But the ending I had to figure out how to end clean making it more powerful as they inspect the switched deck. Ending clean is extremely important
