Solo Camping in Grizzly Country - Slough Creek in May

  • Hiking or backpacking Slough Creek is always fun. Lots of wildlife (and grizzly bears) everywhere and it is very peaceful and quiet. Most of the grizzly bears are on the other side of the river with most black bears on the trail side. Mid May to late June is the best time to do this hike because by July it gets very hot in this valley.

I don’t know why, but slough creek is my favorite place to camp also. Maybe it is because I get to see so many bears when I am there.

Hi Stan, may I ask what is your background, are you a former park ranger or field biologist? It seems you have a lot of experience and are consistently able to capture wildlife and handle grizzly encounters. Could you give some advice as to how you prepared for your current “hobby” ? And of course thank you for all the wonderful footage and work that you do!

Great videos Stan. Of all the streams and rivers I fish, the beauty of Slough Creek is my #1. I get up there every fall, late September into October. Have NEVER seen the level of bear activity you see. Am I just missing sightings or is the timing not good for bear activity? I carry a big scope so ability to see wildlife not an issue.

Slough Creek was a hot spot for horns & the big bears 🐻 had many in counter with them ,never cared more than a pocket knife. Been right up close a couple times, but never rushed, my buddy had his foot bite going up a tree. But he got away, she was more worried about her cub.
