    A while ago I made a video playing a compilation of basslines from The Cure, and whereas it received quite a good response in general from the people watching the channel, there were 2 main suggestions I got in that video: That I should have used a pick and also that I should have played the song Fascination Street, from which is probably the overall best regarded album from The Cure´s discography ("Disintegration", from 1989)
    Since I actually like that song and also feel like giving a positive response to all those comments (the wide majority of them were respectful enough to be taken serious), I sat myself to record the steady picked bassline that Simon Gallup put on this nice track, including tabs on screen as I´ve been doing lately for these bass videos. Some of the comments I got from users asking for this tune are plastered on the video too.
    As always, thanks a lot for watching. Don´t forget to like the video, share with friends that might like this, subscribe if you already haven´t and feel free to share any opinions about this on the comment section. All of that is useful for me to keep doing these videos. See you on the next video with more music!

    This video is a follow up response to another I did in the past covering a bunch of The Cure basslines, where many people asked especifically for this song which was missing in that compilation; so it felt right to grab my bass again and record it. I hope you guys like it, and if you do so; subscribe for more of this tabbed videos that will be uploaded in the future! Greetings!

    Nice choice,simple but must be played in the groove and like so many of Simon's bass lines it totally propells the song.

    I am a newbie and I can't play with a pickup just yet. Should I try with a pickup to start gaining points with it too? Or just do fingerstyle?

    • @GabrielNardinMusic
      @GabrielNardinMusic  3 роки тому +2

      The "Use a pick" vs. "Use just fingers" is a seemingly neverending debate amongst bassists, so if you are starting don´t feel disoriented if you read a lot of people giving different opinions over the Internet. I will just give you mine. There is some type of sounds that are only possible to achieve with picks (for example hard-strumming chords and stuff like that) and some other stuff that is only playable with fingers (slap could be an example). In case you face yourself in one of those situations you mostly won´t have a choice other than go for the required technique. Everything that falls in between lies over the preference of the player, the audio the band needs, the gear used, etc. But my short answer is yes, it´s always good to slowly learn how to use a pick as well as being able to play with bare fingers, so then you can choose one of them depending on the different musical environments you need to play. This video is a good example of that. I recorded a previous video playing The Cure songs using fingers and quite a lot of people pointed out they would have preferred to hear the tunes played with a pick, so you see my response was recording this using it, at least to leave them happy, lol. By the way, if you like this type of videos, subscribe for more. There will keep coming. Greetings!

    Using the PICK is the key! Much better.

      Hola viejo. Muchas gracias por la recomendación! No tenía escuchada la banda pero me puse a escuchar esos dos temas que me tiraste y me gustaron, sobre todo el primero que citaste (ese que es casi todo instrumental, medio zapado y con la viola onda funky con reverb), así que capaz meto algo de eso en algún video en el futuro. Desde ya los estoy bajando para escuchar más de la banda.

    Great cover! How can i make this sound on the amp? What settings you use? Thanks

    • @GabrielNardinMusic
      @GabrielNardinMusic  3 роки тому +5

      Hi there! Bridge mic on the bass fully open, EQ: Bass 5, Mids 6, Treb 5. I am not recording with an amp here, I am going right into the audio interface, but that should be a good start. Also, the effects used are all very subtle, but I put: Warm Overdrive --> Octaver (An octave higher, very light just to cut on the highs of the tiny cell phone speakers for the people that does not use headphones when they listen to these videos) ---> Chorus (also very subtle, about 5-10% wet) ---> A bit of Reverb. I hope it helps. Thanks for watching the video!

    slides in bass burn my fingers so badly lol

    • @GabrielNardinMusic
      @GabrielNardinMusic  8 місяців тому +1

      That is pretty common to hear. With time and repeated practice callouses can get thicker and the fingers eventually get used to it until it does not hurt anymore, though there are other factors like the type of strings you use. (flatwounds are obviously friendlier to prevent that feeling than roundwounds, etc)

    Gabriel, do you mind recording the video again? But this time, record yourself standing instead of sitting, stand up and wear the bass hanging down to your knees. Also turn up the attack of the bass tone so the sound of the pick gets through...

      Yes, the requests/comments from the subscribers I pasted over the video at the first part of the video were coming from the 90s version of UA-cam as well.
