on board with Zidane and R9's peaks being pre 2000. Only thing with Tom's team is you could argue Nesta’s best years were with Lazio pre 2000. Didn't do half bad at Milan though!
R9 only made 56 appearances between 1998 to the end of the 2002 season for Inter Milan as he was injured for most of that time.
So the argument for R9s peak being before that would be his ONE season at Barcelona and TWO at PSV.
After 2002 he won the Golden boot at the 2002 world cup whilst scoring both goals in the final, signed for Real Madrid and scored 68 La Liga goals in his first 3 seasons.

Zidane definitely peaked before the 21st Century but R9 won the Ballon d'Or in 2002 despite being injured for most of the year

For longevity, ability and achievements alone the midfield has to to Xavi, Iniesta, and Modric. Can't leave any of them out. And no other midfielders get close. They were all top 5 Midfielders ever for over a 10 year period which is so rare.

And Busquets gets in the all-time 11 anyday depending on your preference, I mean he has every right to be compared to the greatests! But always a tough list to make!

Also think Thomas Muller deserves a shout - probably not as talented as other Midfielders but is the only midfielder to have over 250 goals for his club and over 290 assists (only behind Messi in all time stats) - Also best player at the 2014 World Cup with the golden boot. Arguably along with CR7 is the player who has achieved the most with their available talent. Still wouldn't have him in my team (unless he won a 3rd treble) but would take him as the CAM/second striker if were putting a proper midfield together rather than putting three 8's in.
