- I guess I'm really doing this!
I'm going to begin a device trial and try out the DIY thing with other amputees!
Here is the link to the check socket.

Yes, there am quite a few conditions to participate in this trial.
The thing is, this device is for a very specific amputation. It isn't a situation of one device suits all. That's part of the issue with trying to service the partial hand prosthetics market. There are like 30 different possible amputation variations, and each one requires its own setup and design. This design could conceivably meet the needs for 7 of those variations by deleting 1 or more mechanical fingers. Right now, this trial is for only 1 of those variations.

Im not an amputee, this is just too cool not to watch.
You're not an amputee... Yet. I can help you with that. Give me your location.
I kinda want a hand extension like this
Me neither. I always watch his videos though.
I want robot arms
Same. If I knew someone with this specific problem, I'd refer them to this video.
Not an amputee here, but if you choose an applicant from the San Antonio area I would be more than willing to donate my time and tools to help them complete the project. I’m really only short a 3d printer.
Sounds like you get a new tool! Super Fast Matt recently did a review of what he feels is the best consumer model. I trust his judgement.
Email me and I'll as my channel sponsors what they can do. No promises, but I'll ask.
I have more than one 3D printer, I am more than willing to donate one for a good cause. Though I would need the recipient to pay for shipping.
@@missingpartsclub If the user is willing to pay to ship, I am willing to donate a 3D printer. I have more than one I could give away.
Just to reiterate in case there is a misunderstanding.
I myself am not an amputee nor do I know any that fit the requirements, and I am not trying to get a 3d printer. I however would be happy to give a hand in or to totally handle the assembly process for someone who isn’t able to themselves due to lack of tools or ability. I would want them obviously to be as much a part of the process as possible as I know I would want to be if the situation was reversed.
As far as 3d printing the socket I would not be able to help with that portion without having a printer myself, and it seems like the recipient would need to be very hand-on with that process in order for Ian to help them get the most out of it.
If it works out that having a 3D printer myself would be of the most help I can look into that, but it is still early in the process for Ian and we don’t know where qualified applicants will be chosen from. So I’m just volunteering my time, tools, and assistance in advance in case it’s needed.
I want to volunteer! Ah shoot, I have two hands.... BRB.
You know that part of the video where I'm hitting the camera and shaking my head and hand NO! That's for you! No! Bad Snaaky005! Bad! Go to your room!
so cool you can do this with out a huge corp backing you it really shows you how greedy our system is i hope you can get some backing and continue your work
How does it show anything about corporate greed? If anything it shows you don't need massive organizations to solve problems, literally nothing about profits...
@@RayJackson88lets just hope the corpos dont patent it and do nothing
@@RayJackson88 ..that's the point. You can solve problems without massive organisations, but massive organisations require all this funding and investment to produce similar results sold at a higher-than-fair price.
@@RayJackson88 Anyone with the skill and desire to collaborate on scaling up projects like this should have the means to do so, and funding that in a way that is intended to decentralize medical devices instead of generating profits is difficult (if not impossible) under capitalism.
@RayJackson88 I wonder if you interpreted the original comment wrong? 💀
Proud of you
Thanks! I've been working on this video literally for weeks.
@@missingpartsclub I always check in and this is the step I’ve been looking forward to you making, it’s a shame you haven’t been able to collaborate with an existing prosthesis company yet but this is definitely a step towards that
Every time i see 1 of your videos it amazes me how natural and fluid your hand gestures are with your prosthetic hand. I am honestly surprised that companies like boston dynamics or other robotics companies have not approached you with out right job offers what you have pulled off with your hand is at or above their own level of technology and sophistication. You hand could be adapted to robotics so stinking easy it is not even funny
If anyone is interested in this and does not have the manufacturing experience, I might be able to help. I travel a lot with work (so I could come to you).
Dude, you've been single-handedly (heh, puns) revolutionizing the Complex Prosthetics game, this is so fun to watch!
I have been watching your progress and work since I lost my thumb in a traumatic amputation. Love seeing where you are going with this. I hope it causes others to maybe work on a version for a missing thumb.
Hopefully! That would be awesome! The tough thing about thumbs is, aside from how to mount the device, how do you drive it? It's a 2 axis appendage. You could always average the motion into a single axis just to get some functionality, which is what I think you'd have to do.
Of course, I believe that change is going to have to come from within the amputee community on that one. Like with my situation, it's been deemed that there isn't enough ROI for the major players to pay too much attention to your needs. You could always do like what I did and first design one for yourself, then one to help your community. Think about it and hmu if you decide to go in that direction.
Been keeping updated for a while and the progress you are making is amazing! This is the groundwork that can ultimately help a lot of people.
crazy how its just one guy with 1.5 hands in a garage doing this by himself, you'd think there would be some major corporations or at least universities making stuff like this
@@denisl2760 I suspect being a disabled person gives him unique insight into how to best design something like this.
the anger phase of greef. is exactly what i would go through for a long time. just when you explained it, i put myself in those shoes and had absolute rage. I love supporting this channel, god bless you all.

Thank you for specifying "only a file". The number of time I see people using power tools for no good reason on UA-cam is mind bogling.
I'm not expecting everybody to be trained to square stock with files as I was (luxury gunsmith), but seeing people using power tools to deburr machined parts or angle grinder to cur steel rods when 10 second with a hacksaw would have suffice is just sad.
Im not an amputee but i live in Alaska. Flat rate works to us too so i hope you include any Alaskans or Hawaiians.
If it fits, I'll ship.
6:13 BEHOLD! The moment we've been waiting for! Haha. Jokes aside..this is awesome Ian. I hope this project takes off because it would be well deserved.
And them he cleans the lense and it gets worse
I’m hoping that he will be able to conduct this without issue
Me too, I've been super apprehensive about putting this out there. But finally came to the conclusion or do it or don't, but pick a path! Now is as good of a time as any, so here we are. Putting it out there and testing the waters.
@@missingpartsclub I’m proud that you were able to arrive at this point though. It shows how far you’ve come and what you have done for your community. If there’s anyone that would be a pioneer, we’re glad it’s you!
@@missingpartsclub How do you get around FDA and prosthetic regulations? Is it because it is a kit? I'm not the FDA police, I was just wondering how that worked?
@@cheeto4493Is this even the kind of thing the FDA regulates? It doesn’t seem to be invasive or anything… and it isn’t a drug..
Awesome! I'm just here for the interesting engineering and solutions that go into the project, but I am so happy you can do this and people get to benefit from it! Hopefully you get plenty of candidates!
Boy is it going to be great seeing the next person gain function (and style!) through the mechanical prosthetic.
Not an amputee but I am a total nerd for mechanical things like this. Fingers crossed for you that this takes off and you're able to develop this more to meet the needs of more people!
My grandpa lost a leg while in the army (Not at war, but service was obligatory under communist gov and they were repairing railroad tracks and shit happened), so I'm very happy many amputees will have more comfortable lives thanks to this project.
Awesome job sir! What a great journey over the years to get to this point. Keep it going!
I gotta say, the fact you're out here shipping out medical protheses to folks who need them is the only bit of good to come from the soft cyberpunk hellscape we're all trapped in. God luck and good speed!
I'm not amputee, and I live in Russia, but I'm watching your channel for months and I wish you success in this business.
Great stuff. I've been following your channel since 2021. I actually found you one night when I was talking to a chick on tinder. She asked me what I was doing at the time (which was playing video games - which I thought would be a lame answer) so I quickly opened UA-cam and just clicked the first recommended video which was one of yours and told her I was watching videos about an amputee making himself a mechanical hand - she thought that was pretty cool. 3 years on we're still together and have recently bought a house. Cheers for that my man!
Respect. Legendary
This man is getting us to the kind of cyberpunk world we actually want to live in
wait how did your cats first react to your mechanical hand anyway
I've been following you for years and it's really cool to see you have come this far!
Your work is outstanding. Well done

I can't wait to see the videos of the first recipients!
As always Tony B and I love watching your videos . Sending you love from Virginia . Wendy
this is awesome beyond words
Best of luck with your test group.
Congrats! This seems very awesome
How exciting! I’m very glad this is feasible for you and the project has managed to come this far. If you need some additional manufacturing support outside of the community which has volunteered, I’d imagine that universities with solid kinesiology labs would be more than happy to help both yourself and recipients at relatively low cost. A non-insignificant amount of grant money is probably eligible for spending on stuff like that. Plus university machine shops are full of altruistic and skilled people with access to incredible machines that experience a non-insignificant amount of downtime.
If you choose someone in the greater Denver area, keep me in mind. Run a proto shop (CNC/machinist, 3dp, EE) and would love to help out,
Are there similar solutions in the prostetics industry or is Ian doing something completely novel here?
Novel, the partial hand market is a veritable desert. The issue is that there's not enough ROI in this market sector for one of the 2 main suppliers to make the multi-million dollar investment to meet the needs of the few. There are a zillion combinations that fingers can be amputated, and each require their own version of a device. Naked prosthetics makes good devices to meet the needs of partial finger amputees. But you need at least the proximal portion of the finger to use any of them. The only option for disarticulation at the metacarpal is the ossur I digit quantum. Aside from the cost of the device (upwards of $100k) is that it's slow (1 second to open, 1 second to close), and it's incredibly fragile.
@@missingpartsclub There's the point design for partial hand amputees
If you ever feel like trying out other types of finger amputation kits, let me know. Quadruple intermediate phalangeal amputation here, I sure would love to try some replacement fingers. Though... Does one ever get over the loss?
I've been following your videos a while now, hoping I'd hear something like this, and I hope for your complete success not only for your future prosperity but for all the people world wide your invention will help. Wishing you the very best of luck!
I’m excited
Good to see someone that still has their pfp after so long, momento mori🫡
Congratulations, man!
You're not going to take up bare knuckle boxing by any chance...cheers.
good luck, you are quite an engineer and i hope this is successful for you and your potential customers
You are a legend
This is a great idea. Keep up the great work. You’re a legend.
Not an amputee, but if you find someone in the Reno area I'd be willing to help with building it! I have everything you'd need and experience casting!
me at the beginning of this video: 🥳 hey finally
me at the ending of this video: 😳 will be even find a candidate?!
It is not as un common as you think. I have met several people just in my neck of the woods who might fit this requirement. Normally you lose the majority of your finger to injuries like this they take it all the way to that point as the bone does not just get sheered it splinters and they take the finger to the nearest remaining joint. Get your finger cut off have way through the join mid way down they will remove it to that joint if it was a crush type injury that caused the damage. So there are probably a few 100 to a few 1000 in the us that would meet the requirement
I’d imagine many of the people who have lost fingers in a similar fashion to this do so in industrial accidents, which means they’d probably be at least somewhat familiar with the tools they’d need to use for this project
Here's hoping
Two observations: One, most of the people commenting below are NOT amputees (BTW, neither am I), but are enjoying watching your videos anyway for the engineering you showcase. Two, I understand all your specifications, limitations, and prerequisites, but I am curious to know how many people will actually meet all of them. You're basically telling everyone they're welcome to try your prosthesis - so long as they have the same amputation as you, the same machinist skills as you, and are at the same level of recovery as you - or in other words, they functionally have to be your twin. Again, no criticism, I understand why you're saying this, I'm just wondering how many people out there will genuinely match up so perfectly... Good luck!
Awesome! So glad you can finally distribute these in some way, it's by far the most practical and intuitive hand prosthetic I've ever seen.
This man is our ripperdoc saint 🥰 In all seriousness though the work that you do is amazing, and even without this project you've already positively affected the lives of many. keep it up, man! Hope all is well if/when you read this
Love this so much. I'd say any amputees that meet the criteria but are daunted by the fabrication process should match up with fans of the channel who are into the engineering/fabrication side; I know I'd personally love to assist using my experience and tools if asked; and absolutely free of charge.
Nice work! Glad you reached this phase and I wish you luck on getting to the next step.
Love chatty kitties. That end is a blessing
Can you even sell this without going through all the medical device certification? Or does this not apply since it's a DIY kit?
That's the workaround. Being that it's a DIY kit, the end user assumes all liability and risk. Think about it like an 80% lower.
There are rules in place where an O&P clinic can deem something/anything a medical grade device and apply for insurance reimbursement, but that is a case by case and clinic by clinic thing. Where they're going to get pushback is that they claim things like these prototypes. The thing is, all hands are different. Every device is a prototype. And since there's such a high rate of rejection with upper limb devices, insurance looks at them as a waste of resources. Hence, my letter from my insurance company stating that fingers are considered a luxury.
WOAH!!!! YA!!!! GIVE PEOPLE A GOOD PERSONAL EXPERIENCE!!!! Unironically!!!! The future for amputees and for disabled people is about to change a lot!!!! LEAD. THE. CHANGE. Be the change.
Amazing man
Can you build a prosthetic arm cannon?
Every American requires a right to bear arms.
🤞 patent
A patent is only as good as the dollars you have to protect it. And if you don't protect it, you just invalidated it.
Also, if someone is going to spend the money to rip me off and bring it to market via the insurance markets (approximately $3million) they can have it, you're raising the tide and helping people. Truth is, there isn't a pile of ROI for this kind of thing. if there was, someone else would have already stepped in and filled the void.
@@missingpartsclub still, you'd think someone like Boston Dynamics would do something like this just for the publicity
what would that do, exactly? 🤔
That's a nice idea, sure. nut at all practical though.
I would like to see different sizes in the future, If this product becomes big enough to expand on that. Other than that, this is really cool. I'm glad you're sharing this to potentially hundreds of other amputees. you're doing a good thing.
Very excited. Congratulations!
Can't wait for this to go worldwide!
I'm not an amputee, but I do have the tools and knowledge to assemble small, complex parts and fabrication as needed. Is there some way for people to volunteer their services instead of paying a machinist?
I'm close - but no cigar - in fitting your requirements! Cool to see progress!
Your videos have given me a serious interest in mechanical engineering
But....where's the holes for the Infinity stones???
the holes are on the back of the medials.
Should invent a cyberpunk hand company in the future be a top helpers for people that don’t have fingers or arms
These videos are true honest science and development. This is the stuff that makes humans awesome
Bumping with a comment
Glad to see the project starting to spread its wings.
I have the same amputation but I’m in Canada and I think my metacarpals might be too short. I do have a well equipped shop and do machine work as my day job so perhaps I can participate in the future
Hi, I came a cross a UA-cam channel that seems like a candidate for you, "Fahad Badar". It is a Qatari man, I know nothing about him, but he has perfect English, probably familiar with USA or UK culture. He has about the right physical issue. Probably suit you personality wise too. I'm sure you'd prefer to work with people in your back yard but I am supposing it might be difficult to find what suits your conditions. Whatever about it anyway best of luck to you moving ahead.
Hold my beer I got fingers to lose!
oHH i LOVE THAT CAT! siamese are freakin great..!!! I miss my little buddy.... cheers!

Congratulations on reaching this milestone point in development! I've been following for a few years and this is really freaking cool! I hope your project is successful!
Not part of the club, just commenting for the algorithm.
Have been watching you for years and the progress you've made and now made available for others is just amazing.
WOW, you are QUITE the engineer, SO SO impressed, I know you've heard that, but man, the way you have solved problems, and created motion, its a stroke of brilliance, I am blessed to be without needing cool prosthetics like you make, BUT IM tellin you..., I really think some big money should get behind you, and help or I hope you do really well, I think you could make history books for the prosthetics, I work IT for drs/nurses, and Ill just say the patients are often times in need of stuff like that...might I thank you for being a leader in this development...God Speed Engineer!!! hopefully the world can recognize the boon your design is!!!
But can you punch somebody with it?
No seriously I wouldn't want to get slugged by that thing...
Hello. I am VIETNAMESE. I also had the same fate as you. It is a pity that such a terrible thing happened to us. I was very depressed after the accident, and I accidentally saw your video. I was very excited and wished that you would see this article and would support me to have a wonderful hand like you. I am so happy because I have another golden opportunity like that. I wish you good health and can invent many wonderful arms to help many people in society.
Not an amputee but I've had nerve damage causing wrist drop in my right (dominant) hand for the past three years. I didn't know there was such a thing as the anger phase. In hindsight I totally lived it. Feels... comforting (might not be the right word) that I'm not alone. Very cool work, hope to see it benefit others.
I've been watching the progress of your posts periodically, and it makes me really happy to see you get to such a point to try to share what you've put so much effort into
It’s been so amazing to watch your channel grow! You’re doing important work for the community!
comment to boost engagement! good luck finding applicants Ian, such an excellent humanitarian project!
Wow, this is so cool. I hope everyone becomes whole with your help, and this takes off. I'm just waiting for the day that even though I'm not missing anything to maybe add an extra 2 arms, but I want everyone that needs help to get it first, I can wait to become Doc. Oct. Once everyone in need has the ability to become whole again or as close as they can get.
I’m a physical therapist and you are one of my favorite people. I hate that insurance companies are still defaulting to the hook and cable prosthesis and the fact that gap between that and a more functional device is tens of thousands of dollars. Your mechanical hand is a wonder and something like this should be the standard for people with limb differences. The electronic limbs are great, but the technology is way too expensive to be mainstream, and your mechanical tech is a necessary mid tier solution that should be available to everyone. I hope you are able to continue to make this a reality!
you're doing amazing things. this brightened my day even though i am not an amputee. keep smiling. love from Maine.
That's sad you can't ship overseas. I totally understand but I was hoping to get this from my daughter who was born without fingers on her left hand. Thanks for the update, hope it succeeds.
Really interested to see how many people in the USA fit these criteria, I'd imagine it's less than or maybe equal to what you've said.
Obviously, as you say this roll out is speculative on your part, but it'd be cool to know.
I lost my ring, pinky, almost half my hand completely clear cut (underneath ring pinky to the wrist) to sarcoma, so I don't have to full metacarpals as a result. I hope one day to have a device as yours, but will continue to wait. Thank you for all that you do.
I remember since 2020, 2021 i think when you started, im so glad you are doing amazing and doing amazing for people, keep going brother you are 1 in a billion🔥
LBKA amputee here, this is fantastic work, man!
You're a genius, Ian! But I'm surprised you didn't drill out the parts. Finding the specific person you're looking for is going to be difficult with all these requirements 😅
This is awesome, such a benefit on so many levels. I'm way excited to follow this adventure in giving and ultimate gadgetry. Viva creativity!
The fact that you managed to make these hands of yours without needing a battery pack of somekind blows my mind. Well done. And best of luck with whatever direction these projects of yours take you in the future.
awesome, not exactly which vid i was expecting, im sorry i hadnt been here for all the loop, but your project has been so interesting for so long, not only as a mechanical marvel, but also not just as an interesting person and process, but also as a positive force of nature, and an inspiration of perseverance!
its cool you have reached this point in your craft that you are sending DIY kits to very specific cases, i can understand your requirements for it, tho perhaps if a single meta carpel is close to proper size, I'd bet it mostly still works, in any case the exact socket hands will fit into, IS going to be different...i mean this with full sincerity and kindness....but your exact nub is more like a knot from the side of an old oak tree! no one fits that glove my friend!! but i also mean this for the hardware fitting too, as the socket COULD make up some small areas to fit. i really hope that you can find those eligible and willing to give this a go! i would certainly love to lend my unexpert but proficient hands to help someone!
Man, this is all at once the coolest, most cyberpunk shit I've ever seen, and the single most surreal thing I think I'll see for a while, a good *long* while. The way his cybernetic hand moves and gestures with the rest of his remaining hand is the definition of uncanny valley. Cool, but off-putting.
I've been a subscriber since the chainsaw upgrade.
This is has been unbelievably interesting and entertaining.
Thank you for sharing these videos.
My father was an orthopedic surgon who once had a young patient with an identical injury, the kid lost four fingers on a hand in an accident. My dad asked me if I could design a robotic prosthetic because I'm an engineer, but I honestly didn't even know where to start. I think that kid would have been delighted with your invention.
What an exciting update! It is amazing that your work is going to help even more people!
If you find a candidate in the vicinity of Fayetteville NC who needs help with the printed stuff, I’ll be happy to donate some printer time. I mostly make props and the like for cosplayers, so I’m used to dealing with prints that are expected to be in contact with the human body.
Wonderful work, would make sense to create a network with local maker spaces to help with the crafting as the missing parts make tapping & fitting challenging. plus many are just not makers to begin with. Plus this will free you from many beginners questions, Also you may want find a way to monetize your consulting time too. Best of luck however it spins out.
