The Ohio River here in Cincinnati has been decimated by commercial fishing. You're very lucky to catch one over 25lbs. Most are 5-10lbs.

There are many great areas to explore all the way to Pittsburgh on the Ohio River .I grew up fishing it back in the 70’s and I’ll tell you it was rough and pollution rampant. I’ve seen it become a great place to fish now but a lot of industry has left and water quality has improved hugely. There’s a trade off between recreational use and industrial use and finding balance is tuff. And you’ve got to be careful in front of those big barges because they can’t see you sometimes

Sorry buddy if your eating anything out of the Ohio River I feel sorry for you, the DNR post articles yearly about consumption of fish from the Ohio River, 2 fish yearly last I saw. Your eating fish that is swimming in chemicals from DuPont aswell as their food. I am seriously concerned if your actively eating fish from the Ohio

Excellent & Informative content. Thanks Dave for taking the time and effort to highlight the downside or pitfalls of the sport in order to giver the viewers a holistic understanding of the sport.
I appreciate the reminders regarding boat ramp and motel parking lot safety and security. In a future video could you also touch on "Fish Consumption Bans and Advisories". I have never experienced a content creator addressing this point. Thanks again Dave for all your time and attention to detail.

Fishinhg for our area has been hard for awhile due to commercial fishing but luckily we can still pull nice fish from time to time at the mouths like big sandy, guyandotte and even symmes creek where i was bale to land a 38lb blue from the bank in shallow water!! thos ebarges are no joke but help produce nice fish, keep up the great work! You and a few others have motivated me to ger a boat and taking fishing/channel to the next level!! You're an inspiration to us all and we learn countless info video to video!!

Great video and tough conditions!! I took a boat for a test ride in 2009 in Louisville, needless to say boat motor blew up. Barges were ever where, two in particular was heading down river and both passed us on each side. Kudos to the Captains. To have no experience boating I do understand the barge traffic you were dealing with and you did a fine job.

I'm from Gwinett Co. Georgia. I heard you mention West Point. My cousin Sean Capes fishes tournaments quite often and West Point is a popular lake for tournaments. I mentioned in the comments on another video of yours that you need to visit Lake Chatuge in Young Harris GA. There are some huge catfish in that lake especially by the dam. Keep fishin', I'll keep watching. Stay safe.

Like you I like the idea of a challenge. Before being a boat owner, I was strictly a waters edge fisherman. But I was good at it. I always had a plan. We're talking saltwater. We have tides, you have damns that open and close. But what I liked to do is find a spot with other people fishing and not catching much. I'd methodically put my plan to work. Soon I'd see the fruits of my experience and many hours in different conditions produce fish when everybody else were noticeably frustrated. My money to spend on fishing was hard to come by. I rarely bought bait. I knew how to catch bait and to KEEP IT ALIVE. I knew how to not lose tackle. The cool part about those days fishing amongst the folks, especially the younger kids, was teaching so they'd have success and not discouragement. A kid fishing is alot better than the alternatives. When I was 17 and in my 1st summer in florida an old man, a daily regular took me under his wing. His name was Orville, a past generation name. To some old retirees, I was a bother, not him. These guys knew how to stretch a dollar. He showed me how to make my own floats that slid up and down the line from an old cooler lid. He had a mullet cast net and a 1/4" mesh net for glass minnows. Spanish Mackerel killers. 1st time I ever saw somebody use a window sash weight for fishing. 10/0 hook, 200lb MONO HD eyebolt and rope tied to the concrete hand rail on the bridge above. Everybody said he's never going to catch anything on that. But it was an amazing sight when that rope would stand straight out off of the railing. His dream was to be able to catch a jewfish. Yep before they changed the name to goliath grouper. And before they were protected. If I had to give him a mythical name it would be The Old Man and the Sea Wall. There was about four or five old men out there everyday. All lined up on thier aluminum lawn chairs. They were there to catch Spanish mackerel. You can catch Spanish mackerel 9 out of 12 months down here. The kingfish however are a spring and Fall Run. Those old men didn't want anything to do with the kingfish. I had to laugh when they'd hook one. It became an effort to save some line on thier open faced reels as the KF would smoke the cheap drag systems
As a seventeen-year-old, Orville had an impact I still remember today. I'm now 66. I can still see that big straw hat and the faded brown Rambler parked astride the rip rap surface commonly found around Bridges of that time.

Dave I live around Mount Vernon, In on the Ohio river. It hasn’t been great for blue’s. However the Wabash connects to it at the SW point of Indiana. The first boat ramp on the Wabash is Dogtown boat ramp in Posey county. I have jug fished and pole fished it for years and we easily catch 40 to 50 pounders on the deep outside bends. However it’s shallow with deep narrow channels. When I say shallow it’s below 10 feet and sand most of the time. If you get this way you might consider that option.

Not 100% sure, but I think I caught that you are from the Watts Bar area? Come on down to Scottsboro, Alabama. Schedule a hotel ahead of time, because they fill up fast. I'd recommend the Quality Inn in Scottsboro. When I was moving to this area, and my home was being built, I stayed at that motel, while they were doing renovations. It was already turning into a great place, but I imagine it's even nicer now they are finished renovating. Fishermen crowded the parking lot, (in the dead of winter), with their boats. Even then, getting in and out of the parking lot was easy. I'm an elderly woman. Always felt safe there. Parking lot is very well lit up. Plenty of boat ramps nearby. Great fishing. You might see one or two tow boats going by, or you might not. Barge traffic is very thin on that part of the river. But pleasure and fishing boats are plentiful! You may have been to this area before and I missed it. I just started watching your channel a few weeks ago.

Paylakes and commercial fishing have screwed up the quantity of big blue catfish in the ohio. There is still a very healthy flathead population only b/c they are tougher to catch. You don’t see many pleasure boaters until summer when the river level is more stable. Springs rains cause massive shifts in the river conditions.

Catfish Dave in my neck of the woods. The Ohio in the tri state area has been decimated by commercial fishing to stock local pay lakes. You can throw a rock in any direction from Huntington,WV and land near a pay lake. The Ohio itself does and can produce big fish you just have to a much lesser chance nowadays. The stretch of Ohio above the Robert C. Byrd towards Point Pleasant, WV locks and dam in fished heavily by catfish anglers for that reason.

  • @hillbillyohio513

I'd say your best bet would be starting at the Smithland dam or pool whatever they call it and work your way down to the Mississippi River. Commercial fishing isn't as bad in that stretch of the river and 60s and 70s are common in that area too. Smithland pool runs from the dam all the way to the Mississippi river. I'd love to see you get a 70 out of there!

Ohio river by portsmouth has a huge salt pile next to the river..every time it rains..salt pours into the ohio river.
With that..anything south of the salt pile is very few fish around..
Up at the green up dam is were they all go..

ive witnessed the decline in the fishing in the Cincinnati area on the Ohio river there are still some big fish but way fewer and far between , many many paylakes in the surrounding area have had it's toll here on the river ,
