Jermaine Jackson 1991 Interview on Video Soul

  • Jermaine talks with Donnie Simpson about the 'You Said' album, on which the singer collaborated with Babyface, L.A. Reid, and Daryl Simmons. He also talks a bit about his family. You can see the video for 'You Said' here on UA-cam also. But I wanted to be able to fit most of the interview here, so I didn't include it. On my channel, also check out my own interview with sister Rebbie from 2001 (posted in three parts).

    i agree jermaine is talented he has a unique voice, i think what really happened was that he wasnt promoted the right way. i luv michael jackson's music but im not blind jermaine is very talented and has a great voice. i mean it was just that he wasnt promoted the right way. jermaine shoulda done wat janet did and that was to take 'control' and find better promoters and a better team. in all the family is really talented.

    "I Dream, I Dream" was sooooooo jamming! Was a Top 30 R&B hit, and so underrated

    Its amazing seeing each of the Jacksons mannerisms within each other. They sound just like their own parents!

    I definitely don't think that's the case with Jermaine. He's really the only Jackson sibling who proved himself as a talented singer, composer, producer AND multi-instrumentalist. The album wasn't a flop -- it had two top-40 R&B singles-- but perhaps its relative little success compared to his other albums was because he put a lot of it into the hands of LaFace, and the material they came up was not their best!

    Jermaine is super talented, I think people tend to forget that. I think if Jermaine just focused more on his music instead of getting fame..he'd be more recognized for his music today...instead of being recognized as "the opportunist" of the family.

    Randy had a great album with the Gypsys. Jermaine has a wonderful voice, which is his strength. Randy's strength is his musicianship, and the great songs he has produced on his own and with the brothers.

    This album was great no skips! It got overshadowed by Word to the Bad!!! Jermaine's best work

    great points ThePoacherz.......2300 Jackson Street was performing well on the r&b charts and I was at my local record store the day that album was pulled from the shelves inconspicuously and radio stopped playing the record as well...I was 17 when this happened and knew something rotten was going on, but couldn't put my finger on it.....Michael put the order in as you say, and essentially sabotaged the careers of his brothers and Randy by the time the early 90s hit

  • @ThePoacherz
    @ThePoacherz 12 років тому +18

    What's stranger is the fact that Michael stole producers! and none of his fans say anything about it! It made me like Jermaine a lot more! And to think this happened because Michael faked sick and Jermaine was foolish enough to visit him..... That's strange!

    • @wendywhoisit1819
      @wendywhoisit1819 5 років тому +2

      We don't know what actually happened, we weren't there. Michael surely did bad stuff that noone talks about, but it's not like you can steal a person, the producers decided they would rather work with Michael themselves. That being said, it's true that Michael did have a big ego and it showed sometimes. That's what being treated as the biggest superstar does to you.

    This was before Hip Hop and Pop took over completely! If Will I am and Raphael Sadiq had gotten a hold of Jermaine, we would be talking about Soul vs Pop instead of East Coast vs West Coast!

    I didn't realize Jermaine was outspoken about La Toya's ex-husband's influence before she herself was. That means the whole family must have suspected it more than likely. Interesting.

    AMEN! When folks sang "Video Killed the Radio Star, they were NOT lying! And to think folks called this music the music of the talented! It was canned! Now these Hip Hop dudes are sampling Jermaine and other Soul artists to death! You got R Kelley sampling Bill Whithers. Jay Z sampling Jermaine Jackson! A sure sign that Hip Hop and Pop is just smoke and mirrors posing as talent! We should have questioned the crossovers!

    I'm sure it sold moderately on the foreign end but, the "You Said" album was still not a Gold seller Worldwide. Neither was "2300 Jackson St." album.
    Not sure what you mean exactly about Michael planting a rumor and, without facts to prove it was Michael, it only adds up to a rumor itself. Jermaine's first draft of "Word To The Badd" actually exists on UA-cam so, that is a known fact, not a rumor.

    Last name may have been the ticket, but the talent was a factor. Which albums of his have you listened to? I own every one of his albums from 1977 on, and can confidently say there's a lot of solid musicianship and vocal performances. Songs like "I Can't Take No More," "Take a Trip to My Tomorrow," and "You Like Me, Don't You," to name a few, showcase his versatility and funkiness.

    Michael shined above the rest of the family because he was the most talented. The others have talent, but they were not Michael! So that is why his star shined so brightly above the others.

      Sophia Johnson ...lol. Michael only had dancing over his brothers. but that still doesn't take away that Jermaine and the brothers are very talented as well..

      They had talent agreed. They were just not as talented as Michael. His voice octave range, creativity, artistry and presence ...just to name a few...excelled the rest of his brothers....that's why he was able to shine above them.

    Well, the version on the album did not have the lyrics that were on the "leaked" version that later became a single. This interview was done before all of that happened; that's why it's not mentioned.

    If your records sell everywhere but the USA it simply means that us Americans have no taste! I remember having a foreign roommate who just about died when she saw all of the Jermaine Jackson I had! I asked her about Michael( The lady was Japanese) She said she heard of him! Apparently she had definitely heard of Jermaine! She turned me onto albums that I didn't even know existed! When I went to the record store to get them! the guy tried to tell me that they didn't exist!

  • @ThePoacherz

    This album was one of the albums that went to foreign distribution and did well! That kinda upset Michael! Jermaine was supposed to disappear: not appear at every Karaoke bar, and Keybaret in Tokyo and Seoul!
    So Michael told the two men to stop and planted that rumor! Hence Word to the Bad! I thought it was just Jermaine! Then 2300 Jackson Street suddenly got pulled from the shelves! Why? It got great Foreign distribution

    @MystroMusicMan There's sometimes a strange dynamic in the Jackson family between family love and commercialism. I think that Jermaine decided to release the "leaked" version of 'Word to the Badd' because there was a buzz/controversy about it...yet I'm pretty sure he would say it was not about Michael; but about someone else.

    That whole situation with La Toya and Jack Gordon was very strange. I definitely believe that he was abusive and a horrible guy; but what's odd to me is how the rest of the family just seemed to be aloof to it all...and sometimes even when I hear La Toya talking about it nowaways, I feel like there's some pieces to the story that she's not revealing.

    It's so strange to hear him do this interview and then hear "Word To The Badd". He doesn't speak so fondly of his brother on the song but talks about "selling out your family" for success.
    JJ is one talented Bro. I'm REALLY suprised "You Said" was not a big seller. But then again, there were some complaints that Jermaine wasn't such a ot ticket anymore AND the "recycling" LA & Face were accused of doing (example: "You Said, You Said" = "Giving You The Benefit" -Pebbles).

    I'm familiar with Randy's music -- I have the Randy & The Gypsys album. While "Love You Honey" is a catchy song, I'm surprised about the comparison. His voice is much weaker than Jermaine's! And if we're talking about album sales -- well, unfortunately, Randy's did not fare very well.

      Jermaine is an okay singer but he was never a great singer . That is the reason he was always in the back ground until he got tired of being back there.. he held his own and he had a good fan base ! He just wasn't on the level as Michael when it comes down to being an all around entertainer.

    That's when I learned about the Camelot Catalog! I guess records pulled from American distribution can be purchased this way! Sam Goody just defied MJ and sold the ones I had then! What was more interesting was the fact that they had the foreign awards on the wrapper! that's how I learned about Tokyo's Music Prize! Tokyo Music Awards! etc! I decided then that Pop and Hip Hop could kiss My... You get the picture!
