Hello I noticed some things you mentioned in your videos! I don't know if you have any issues with clay cracking, but if you have any regular occurrences with that issue, I suggest taking them out of the sun! You usually don't want your clay to sit to dry in the sun, it will become more fragile and likely to crack. Same thing with using a hair dryer. This is because it dries the clay unevenly, and clay shrinks, so it pulls on part of the clay, but not the other, thus cracking it. :) Leave it under a damp, but not soaked paper towel, and let it dry naturally that way for 3-7 days. If it needs to dry slower, cover it with plastic to help seal the moisture. It will take significantly longer to dry, but be less likely to crack. I will appreciate it so much if you could give me advice what vanish to use, because obviously the one i picked up didn’t work out the best 🙏
thank you! so glad to hear you’ve been experimenting with clay :) i’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to a truly functional ashtray. i realized after i made this video that the type of clay & the varnish i use do not make them useful for putting out a cigarette due to safety (fire hazard) and aesthetic reasons (the black spot you’re referring to!). since then i’ve labeled my trays as decorative pieces only. the varnish i do use however is called “polyurethane” and it is heat resistant but still doesn’t protect our trays like we’d want it to. i’ve been wanting to try out epoxy resin but i’m not sure if that’d be any different than polyurethane. i also believe that real ceramic clay dried in a kiln and painted with glaze is safe to use and burn therefore being the best option for a functional tray. i only assume this since i’ve seen smoking pipes used with ceramic clay material. i haven’t done any research but definitely plan to. if you figure anything else out let me know!! :)

Hey! I love your work✨ I have just left my desk job to pursue art full time. Im having a hard time finding the right sealer for ashtrays, what brands do you recommend? Thanks a lot!!
hello thank you so much! :) congrats on following your passion 💜 i use polyurethane, a water based sealer that’s scratch and heat resistant. its about $18 but it comes in a large can and lasts a while

Glad I found you you remind me of Su Su through mxr...you have exactly😂❤what I need the personality of me and right with what I'm doing n with my product and tasre,!ty!
Nice work, this was the first video I watched before I started to make an ash tray, can you please tell which paint are you using? so it won't burn? thank you 💜
i am using apple barrel acrylic paint! this tray is potentially dangerous with burning items since my sealer (polyurethane) is only heat resistant, not fire resistant. paint alone, with no sealer, would probably burn as well. i suggest using actual ceramic clay in a kiln for a truly functional ashtray, although i’d have to do more research. maybe there’s a sealer that can be used that is fire resistant & safe for smoking 😁
gracias!
I’ve been wanting to start making some ashtrays for my shop and I was just wondering how you package and ship them out so there’s no damages? I’m only used to shipping little clay earrings so I’m not too familiar with larger pieces
I purchased 6x6x2 inch foldable boxes from ULINE! They fit the size of my trays and other similarly sized clay pieces very well. I wrap them with bubble wrap to keep them safe and tissue paper to fill in any space in the box so they don’t move around during transit
i used mod podge gloss water based sealer. i don’t use it anymore but i know it can withstand high tempatures. i use polyurethane now, a higher quality sealer that is heat resistant
Hey! I just found your video looking for a good sealer for an ash tray, and I wanted to ask you, which one resist heat the best? Modge podge or polyurethane? Thanks in advance❤
Hey girl! Me again lol. I just decided to come back an tell you what I found out. I was watching an epoxy resin ashtray video, and the girl says that hers hasn't burn when using it. She even put a torch on it and the only thing that happened is that the ashtray got a black mark but it was easy to clean with a wipe.
ooooo thank you for the information! i’ve been wanting to experiment more with epoxy resin and i figured it would be the best option to seal these type of ashtrays :)
Does the polyurethane withstand the heat of ash or incense matches in your experience? I made an air dry clay ashtray like this that I haven't sealed yet and I keep seeing that there isn't much that can help totally seal air dry clay from the heat
it’s heat resistant but i definitely do not recommend burning the lit tip of anything onto the surface of your ashtray. an incense holder could be okay but still a safety hazard. i would utilize for decoration purposes unless it’s a ceramic tray with proper glaze
@@KikiOrKeke2013 i’m not familiar with every type of mod podge but my current knowledge is that there isn’t any that is fire safe, just heat resistant. in this video i’m using polyurethane which is similar to mod podge but in my opinion, leaves a better finish and is smoother to apply. the polyurethane is heat resistant. if you put something out on your ashtray, you’ll likely just ruin the coating & the painting on your ashtray. this is why my ashtrays are currently more for decorative purposes until i figure out how to make them fully functional and safe. i’ve heard someone say resin may be the best sealant option to preserve your ashtrays aesthetic and encourage safety, but i haven’t experimented with it myself or done much research.
girl im so scared i made a pickle rick and normal rick ash tray with model magic and didn’t read the label that said don’t use with hot items, i hope the mod podge saves it😭
the lowest tempature possible, mine is 200F. the time needed varies but i check on them every 30 mins. i’ve kept some in for hours and some just 30 mins, it really depends on the thickness. if you’ve never used your oven to dry clay before check on it every few minutes or so to make sure it’s not cracking because some ovens just built different. just be cautious since some clays aren’t always safe in the oven!! :) happy creating
@@chetanakashyap2294 the sealer i used is heat resistant so it’s neither fire or cigarette tempature resistant. putting out a cigarette or anything of the sort would probably ruin your ashtray if you built it this way!
the sealer i use now is polyurethane. it’s heat resistant but not fire resistant. some sealers can also become toxic when burned and in general, the appearance of your ashtray can be ruined. because of this i’ve labeled my ashtrays as decorative pieces only. they could probably hold a cigarette in place to catch ashes but the burning tip shouldn’t touch the surface. i still wouldn’t recommend this because it can potentially be dangerous. i plan to look into what would work to sustain the aesthetic and safety of my trays. epoxy resin seems like a good bet but i’d have to research and test it out. i also think ceramic clay is where you could make an ashtray way more functional and safe.
i have a tendency to make things take longer than they should lolol but usually like 1 hour for sculpting, the drying time varies, then about 1-4 hours for painting & sealing depending on complexity and my mindset
@@denisedunne5164 the sealant i use here is called polyurethane which is heat resistant, not fire resistant. so there is a bit of a fire hazard but more likely, you’ll just end up ruining the painting on your ashtray. these ashtrays are more for decorative purposes. i’ve assumed that resin could be a potential sealant that would be fire resistant but i’m not sure as i haven’t tested this myself or done much research
unfortunately no :( this ashtray is for decorative purposes. putting a cigarette out on something like this would damage the art piece and is a fire hazard
I have a Question... this is one of the thing I read on air dry clay : "You shouldn't make ashtrays with air dry clay. It's a porous material that will get burned if it gets in contact with a burning cigarette. Also, you can't wash air modeling clay items, so you won't be able to clean them." So, I was wondering if the "mudpod" had something special in it making it flammable? Otherwise, I don't really want to lose my time making an ashtray I won't be able to use. On another note, I wanted to say that I really liked to see how you created the ashtray, the method could be applied to other items, anyway I do think so... Thank you for the video, and for anyone who knows the answer and reply
as long as you don’t actually press the cigarette or whatever you smoke into the ashtray. the lit tip of one is what makes it potentially dangerous. these are more for decoration purposes. although, i do use a polyurethane sealant that is heat resistant making it safer to use. if you want an ashtray you can actually get the most out of, with no worries, use actual ceramic clay. and thank you, im glad you enjoyed watching! :)
@@thesentimentalhummingbird I just read that using a metal insert, like a tin can... but to make it easier, I will cut and paste, my English can be terrible lol "To make a safe and functional homemade clay ashtray, you need to use a metal insert to protect the clay. Short tin cans are perfect. You can build the clay around them. Make sure you only clean it with a damp cloth, and never leave a burning cigarette unattended. Especially in an air dry clay tray." So, I haven't tried it, but I will when I do have a chance... and I will also try to find a polyurethane sealant that is heat resistant, waterproof also if possible... probably will be like finding glove fireproof and level 9 cut resistant... was a pain in my "butt" lol

amazing tutorial ! I was hesitationg to put some varnish on my ashtray, but I don't know if it's ok since it's a flammable substance? If anyone has a tip about that. It's my first one. Thank you so much
it depends on the type of varnish used and if it’s fire/heat resistant. some varnishes can also become toxic when burned and in general, the appearance of your ashtray can be ruined. i plan to look into what would work to sustain the aesthetic and safety of my trays. epoxy resin seems like a good bet but i’d have to research and test it out. if you find out any information on what’s best, let me know!

@@KikiOrKeke2013 i’m not familiar with every type of mod podge but my current knowledge is that there isn’t any that is fire safe, just heat resistant. in this video i’m using polyurethane which is similar to mod podge but in my opinion, leaves a better finish and is smoother to apply. the polyurethane is heat resistant. if you put something out on your ashtray, you’ll likely just ruin the coating & the painting on your ashtray. this is why my ashtrays are currently more for decorative purposes until i figure out how to make them fully functional and safe. i’ve heard someone say resin may be the best sealant option to preserve your ashtrays aesthetic and encourage safety, but i haven’t experimented with it myself or done much research.
girl im so scared i made a pickle rick and normal rick ash tray with model magic and didn’t read the label that said don’t use with hot items, i hope the mod podge saves it😭
omg noooo i hope that turned out okay for you!!!
What temp and time do you do when putting the air dry clay in the oven ?
the lowest tempature possible, mine is 200F. the time needed varies but i check on them every 30 mins. i’ve kept some in for hours and some just 30 mins, it really depends on the thickness. if you’ve never used your oven to dry clay before check on it every few minutes or so to make sure it’s not cracking because some ovens just built different. just be cautious since some clays aren’t always safe in the oven!! :) happy creating
Thank you and it looks great✨️.. hah.. like we have same thoughts going on in the head while painting🤣👍🤗🌞
Hi, is it fire ir cigarette temperature resistant?
@@chetanakashyap2294 the sealer i used is heat resistant so it’s neither fire or cigarette tempature resistant. putting out a cigarette or anything of the sort would probably ruin your ashtray if you built it this way!
Awesome
Hey wondering what clay you use
i use das air dry clay!! i get it at michaels
What kind of paint did you use?
apple barrel acrylic paint!
What kind of paint are you using ? Is it acrylic?
yes acrylic apple barrel paint
is it safe to use it as a real ashtray??
the sealer i use now is polyurethane. it’s heat resistant but not fire resistant. some sealers can also become toxic when burned and in general, the appearance of your ashtray can be ruined. because of this i’ve labeled my ashtrays as decorative pieces only. they could probably hold a cigarette in place to catch ashes but the burning tip shouldn’t touch the surface. i still wouldn’t recommend this because it can potentially be dangerous. i plan to look into what would work to sustain the aesthetic and safety of my trays. epoxy resin seems like a good bet but i’d have to research and test it out. i also think ceramic clay is where you could make an ashtray way more functional and safe.
do you use acrylic paint
yes! the paints used in this video are apple barrel
Also how long does it take for you to finish a ashtray on average?
i have a tendency to make things take longer than they should lolol but usually like 1 hour for sculpting, the drying time varies, then about 1-4 hours for painting & sealing depending on complexity and my mindset
Is it safe when stumping cigarettes out ?
@@denisedunne5164 the sealant i use here is called polyurethane which is heat resistant, not fire resistant. so there is a bit of a fire hazard but more likely, you’ll just end up ruining the painting on your ashtray. these ashtrays are more for decorative purposes. i’ve assumed that resin could be a potential sealant that would be fire resistant but i’m not sure as i haven’t tested this myself or done much research
Cool! So, I guess one cannot actually put out a cigarette in the ashtray, right?
Thanks... LIked!
unfortunately no :( this ashtray is for decorative purposes. putting a cigarette out on something like this would damage the art piece and is a fire hazard
@@thesentimentalhummingbird OK, fair enough... Thanks... Appreciated.
What kind of clay is this?
this is das air dry clay :)
@@thesentimentalhummingbird gracias senora 👍
I have a Question... this is one of the thing I read on air dry clay :
"You shouldn't make ashtrays with air dry clay. It's a porous material that will get burned if it gets in contact with a burning cigarette. Also, you can't wash air modeling clay items, so you won't be able to clean them."
So, I was wondering if the "mudpod" had something special in it making it flammable?

I just read that using a metal insert, like a tin can... but to make it easier, I will cut and paste, my English can be terrible lol
"To make a safe and functional homemade clay ashtray, you need to use a metal insert to protect the clay. Short tin cans are perfect. You can build the clay around them.
Make sure you only clean it with a damp cloth, and never leave a burning cigarette unattended. Especially in an air dry clay tray."
So, I haven't tried it, but I will when I do have a chance... and I will also try to find a polyurethane sealant that is heat resistant, waterproof also if possible... probably will be like finding glove fireproof and level 9 cut resistant... was a pain in my "butt" lol
The link to your website goes to an error page. Why wouldn't you update that? Already bad business practice, not interested anymore.
my website is currently being reconstructed as i’ve been away from multiple aspects of my work due to personal issues. as you can see, this video is months old, therefore, most of the description is as well. i have not gotten the chance to update much but plan to very soon. i apologize that my timeline does not align with yours. you’re welcome to keep up with me on social media for more updates, especially my tiktok since i’m most active on there. have a good day!
Can I air fry it
lmao i have no idea, i would research that before trying that
are you a gemini?
nope😛
That’s allota clay lol ,still cool though
Also, great piece! Don’t be alarmed if you received a bunch of follows from me on social media lol your work is awesome 👏🏻
thank you so much!!! the link in my video descriptions and channel home page aren't up to date but you can find me on tiktok @/vitaalovesart and instagram @/vitaalovesart :)
amazing tutorial !
