Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the thumbs up. I'm going to be uploading some new heater reviews this coming week from our upcoming Colorado fishing trip so keep an eye out for more videos. Rick
very nice, i have used one for hunting the last 15 yrs (still same one) however i have never used a lighter to light the pilot light. that was new to me how you did that. all i do is keep pressing the button down. you can use a 20# propane tank with them, but you need to put a filter on when using that. the filter screws on the heater then you put your hose on that. i use a 20# once in a while, reason i don't all the time is i don't want to carry it out with me while hunting. a 1# tank will last me all day while hunting. i run it on low while hunting. works great in my blind. i let it run a hr, than turn it off etc... on low it lasts 6 hrs and hi it will last 3. nice video thanks for sharing it with us
I did not realize you could light the pilot light without a lighter. Thanks for the tip. I'll try that out on the next trip. I also appreciate the tip about the 20 lb tank and the filter. Someone at Cabela's told me about using a filter also as he said it is dirty propane versus the clean propane that comes in the smaller propane tanks. I am getting ready to purchase the Mr Heater Big Buddy and the hose and attachments to run off the 20 lb propane tanks as Mike and I are heading back to southwest Colorado in November for another fishing trip to the Miramonte Reservoir, but this time, I'll also have a 4-season tent. I'll be uploading those videos later in November. Thanks again for the great comments and advice. Rick
I am a new follower and really enjoyed this video. I scouted your exact same heater at Walmart today and it was $79.00 and appeared to be a markdown price. I intend on using it in my cargo van in the near future. Thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful, and thanks for the thumbs up. I'm out camping a lot more these days and am looking at different ways to sleep better and stay warmer when cold weather camping. Let me know if you have any questions and I would love to hear ideas that work well for you, if you feel like sharing them here. Rick
Use the built in igniter to light it. I have refilled my 1 pound tanks for years and only cost me about 50 cents each. If you get the right hose to connect a 20# tank you don't need a filter. Its the hose that causes problems not the propane. Also try a stove fan to help circulate the heat
Thanks for taking the time. How us it holding up? I just got one for the toy hauler / camper. It was 82° today. Wont need it for a while obviously. I bought it on sale for $31.00!
Let's be perfectly clear here. I have the Big Buddy, Portable Buddy, and the little Buddy heaters and on the last fishing trip in April 2024, Mikes' Big Buddy heater stopped working when using it in his trailer RV. Fortunately I had my Big Buddy heater and my portable buddy heater with me when I met him at the lake. What we found out was that his "non-mr. heater" hose was the problem. When I hooked up my Mr. Heater hose, then his Big Buddy heater worked fine. I also had my Portable Buddy heater with me that I used in his extra room in the RV and it worked fine. I think the lessons learned from this trip was to use the "right" hose and always have a backup on a long trip in cold weather here in Colorado or other places like it. Rick
5:00 "And when this runs out of fuel, it automatically shuts off. I've seen it happen several times" haha Classic my friend, love it😂😂Sorry but it was funny☺
There are many things in life to enjoy a good laugh at and this could be one of them, but I guess I said it wrong. The propane runs out and then it gets cold and you realize a new propane canister needs to be installed. It doesn't shutoff on it's own, but the gas does run out on it's own. Okay, I'll give you this one. Hard as I try, there are many things I say wrong on videos. Rick
@@mikenrickoutdoors Hi Rick Thanks for the video buddy, i went out an bought this heater, and so far it's working really well. All the best to ya! Simon
Yah, I want to take the video down over that mistake, but it will remain there to show that I'm not always the smartest guy on the block and have things I need to learn, like reading the instructions. Thanks for the heads up. Rick
I've had the big buddy for years and I think it's worth a little extra money to have more heat just in case you need it. It also holds two 1 pound propane bottles or you can use the hose adapter for 20 pounder's.
Yah, I really like the Big Buddy. It saved my bacon on three 12 degree nights here in Colorado last year. This year I have a Camp Chef Alpine wood stove, but the Big Buddy will still be with me as a back up heat source for this year's cold weather camping. Rick
Well, that's me being stupid and not reading the instructions before testing it. I've learned my lesson, thanks to helpful comments like yours. I really do appreciate comments that help me learn and take corrective action. Rick
LOL. Absolutely. It was a rookie mistake and I pay for that every week. I'm glad you brought it up though. My later videos on this actually show me not making that mistake. Rick
LOL. You're absolutely right and I would be on my way to financial independence if I could collect money for every time this has been brought up. Yes, I didn't read instructions the first time I used it but hopefully with yours and all the other comments, people won't make the same mistake I made. Thank you for the heads up. Rick
You're exactly right. Lesson learned, now that video is there, with all of the comments like yours, for others to learn, even from my stupidity. Thank you for the comment. Rick
You are absolutely correct. That was the first time I ever used a Mr. Heater and I madje the mistake of not reading the instructions completely. That mistake has not been made again and I have tested the Big Buddy and Little Buddy many times since then. Thanks for leaving the comment though as it helps others realize the Pilot button is all that is needed. Rick
Thanks for sharing. I was a bit worried about using it in a tent and now I am pleased to know it can be used indoors 👍
Glad to help. Mike and I have not had any issues and we use them indoors a lot, but we always have a CO2 and O2 sensor with us.
Rick
Gracias explicacion
Thanks for the thumbs up.

Love your review. And the background ( breathing a sigh) was so beautiful.

Thanks for the video man!
No problem, but I did make one mistake with this Portable Buddy. I didn't need to use a lighter. The heater has a built in lighter.
Rick
@@mikenrickoutdoors yeah I saw all the comments lol

Thanks Billie for the advice. I am looking into the fans now.
Rick
Without the tank attached, you can set the knob on 'pilot' then press down while looking at the thermocouple, you'll see the spark.
You are absolutely correct. I will not be making that mistake again.
Rick

it has a self igniter

Why are you using a lighter to light it? it says it has a built-in Piezo igniter.

You didn't read the directions. There's an igniter built in.
You are absolutely correct. My new videos show how to light it correctly.
I should probably take this video down.

You don’t need a lighter

YOU DONT NEED A FRIGGIN LIGHTER UNLESS THE PEZIO IGNITER BUILT IN TO THE HEATER FAILS!!!!

Sorry but you got that wrong, You don't use a lighter to light it with, It Should self ignite thats the whole Idea of it,
You are correct. I have now been told that by four people. Thanks for the heads.
