Pre-filling the oil filter should be a necessity by the manufacture. Upon initial start up after oil change you’ll develop oil pressure quicker than a dry filter. I have conducted many tests with vehicles on how long it takes to initially develop oil pressure after oil change with dry filter and prefilled filter. These tests were done with an aftermarket gauge that reads the psi coming directly out of / after the filter. Dry takes 5 to 7 seconds to get for oil pressure. Prefilled takes 2 to 3 seconds. I have a 2019 RAV4 and I absolutely love it. Once I use up my free oil changes / maintenance Toyota gives me, I’m not letting them touch it after that. This is way too easy especially knowing they went back to an actual filter that you screw on and off.

At last someone doing the Oil Change the right way !!! Tell me why do you remove the filter before the drain plug. I drain the oil via the drain plug first then the filter, other than that, I do it the same meticulous way.
Thank you for your comment! There is no functional difference between removing the oil or the drain plug first. The reason why it was done in this case is because it is just easier to manage oil coming from the oil filter while the oil pan is empty.
I did the 1st oil chg at 1600miles, the next and all following at 5k miles. 10k is under dust free ideal conditions- no one drives like that. Oil is cheap, engines are expensive. If you want the engine to see 200k+ miles- do it at 5k or less.
@@sptrader6316 Absolutely. I would never go 10k no matter what it says on the oil container. I do 5k for my wife's city driving car. 7K for my highway driving car.
It's been my experience that it is an industry practice to tremendously overtighten oil filters. This is only a problem for the initial oil change. I recommend that the initial oil change only be performed by a dealer. In the United States, the first 2 oil changes are free from Toyota. After these, you should gave no problem removing the oil filter.
I didn't have any trouble with the first oil change (speaking from the great white north). The filter was tight but not overly so. Came off with a standard band-type wrench.

I am not sure pouring oil into oil filter is necessary at all. It takes more time and on horizontal mounting filters like this, it could drip out while screwing it on. Just lubricate the filter O-ring and that is enough.
Just changed oil on my 2020 RAV4. Be prepared. The oil filter was on way too tight from the factory. Was able to get it off with pliers but the filter was significantly deformed.
We had the same issue. Ideally, you need to use the oil filter wrench then you won't damage the oil filter. It is shown in the video at 02:00. Lisle 63600 Oil Filter Wrench - amzn.to/3HACWE8.
You should use the oil that is recommended by Toyota for your model (see the manual for recommended types of oil). It is already designed to perform in both cold and hot environments.
i live in TX, we get 90-100 degree days half the year and have fast 80-85 mph highways. 0w-16 ships from the factory. At 500mi i swapped it with 0w-20 mobil extended performance (a full synthetic with new American Petroleum Institute SP rated). If i were driving in 120F, I'd fill it with 0w-30 full synthetic, mobil makes this as "Advanced Fuel Economy", or if you can;t find 0w-30 go with a branded 5w-30 full synthetic. Look for at least an API SN PLUS or ideally the new API SP rated. The 0w-16 is SP rated, older SN bottles of other grades fail to meet the new standard in this engine. stick to shorter oil changes anyway with that heat. Def, get that 0w-16 out of there! its not for the kindom bro!
You can turn on the air conditioning and the engine will start working shortly after that. Here is our oil change video in the hybrid - ua-cam.com/video/wPGQJ6aT4N8/v-deo.html.
If you can't remove the oil filter by hand, you will need to use the oil filter wrench. We are using this one - Lisle 63600 Oil Filter Wrench - amzn.to/3HACWE8.
So if I'm just replacing the oil and not changing the filter I would be putting in 4.2L? (I'm still getting the dealership to do oil cahnges every 16,000 km but for peace of mind I'm still replacing the oil every 8000 km)
@@geraldevans2535 agreed. I ended up replacing the filter... the original filter was a little smaller than the one I got from the dealer. It was also very tight when I removed it.
Man i'm a little irritated trying to find the 0-16 weight oil these cars take, do you guy's think 0-20 would be fine ? I can't imagine that's a huge difference anyway....
0-16 is obviously more critical during the "cold engine start" for hybrids when you are expecting "full throttle" from combustion engine, when main battery is depleted . I could speculate and say that non hybrid , pre-warmed engine will tolerate 0-20 oil- but i will not. Will stick with Toyota recommendation to use 0-16.
Morozov Automotive .... Good points... I’ll just stick to the 0-16... They’re also recommending 10,000 miles in between oil changes... I had a hybrid prior to the current one, Camry hybrid, used 0-20 oil full synthetic, and they recommended every 5,000 miles... Not sure why this 0-16 is ok for 10,000... Maybe special additives ? not sure ... kinda crazy though ....
0w-20 if fine If Toyota is suggesting 10k between changes . You are more than safe to do so. Toyota wouldn't put themselves in a position to increase warranty claims if they were not sure. Toyota knows what they are doing, Unlike many of the back yard geniuses on here 😁

Ridiculous that they put it on that tight. My 2 filter wrenches kept slipping off
Where can you get that wrench for the oil filter only ones I can find are the old aluminum ones

Thanks man but can i ask you Why change oil its new
@lIIlIll Recommended by who?
Hello, Can I use 5w40 oil for the a25a-fks engine, because here In Saudi Arabia the weather is extremely hot it’s reach above 50 C (122 F ) ?
You should use the oil that is recommended by Toyota for your model (see the manual for recommended types of oil). It is already designed to perform in both cold and hot environments.
0w20 for Summer, 0W16 Winter season.
i live in TX, we get 90-100 degree days half the year and have fast 80-85 mph highways.
Just a simple oil change don't over do it
What's the torque used in the torque wrench to tight up the drain plug?
The torque is 30 lbf-ft.
Engine oil is not dark, why you charge it?
I was wondering is this a hybrid rav4 with cvt? How do you change this oil?
It is an awd trail/adventure trim.
You change the oil on a hybrid engine exactly the same way.
My God couldn't they have had the plastic bottom plate held on with 3 screws. With the fourth side snap into place or hinged!
and how did you force to start engine in hybrid?
You can turn on the air conditioning and the engine will start working shortly after that. Here is our oil change video in the hybrid - ua-cam.com/video/wPGQJ6aT4N8/v-deo.html.
Hi do you need a special tool to remove the filter?
If you can't remove the oil filter by hand, you will need to use the oil filter wrench. We are using this one - Lisle 63600 Oil Filter Wrench - amzn.to/3HACWE8.
@@MorozovAutomotive thank you
I used a standard circular metal band wrench to loosen the filter. It came off no problem.
French fry or potato chip in tire tread?
The new fill oil level should touch the full mark.....not below full mark or between low and full mark.....new oil level should touch full mark....
where did you get the filter wrench?
Any parts store will have them or look them up online, could be cheaper. Lisle 63600 Oil Filter Wrench - amzn.to/3HACWE8.
Morozov Automotive what size filter wrench?
So if I'm just replacing the oil and not changing the filter I would be putting in 4.2L?
(I'm still getting the dealership to do oil cahnges every 16,000 km but for peace of mind I'm still replacing the oil every 8000 km)
Jesse Vandermaas, I am yet to find an auto mechanic who doesn't over fill the engine oil.
Thats a great idea... Im on the same boat. I may still do the filter too but I hadnt considered replacing just the oil
The filters are so tiny, why take a chance of not replacing them? The oil is the biggest expense
@@geraldevans2535 agreed. I ended up replacing the filter... the original filter was a little smaller than the one I got from the dealer. It was also very tight when I removed it.
you are compromising your safety by going under the car while it is running, you can just check for leak after engine is turned off.
What's the code for the engine oil filter?
Thank you!

0w-20 if fine
If Toyota is suggesting 10k between changes . You are more than safe to do so. Toyota wouldn't put themselves in a position to increase warranty claims if they were not sure.
Toyota knows what they are doing, Unlike many of the back yard geniuses on here 😁
Dave Dave, I always change the engine oil twice as often as recommended as I keep my vehicles far longer than the warranty period.
