I tend to be a silent observer on UA-cam but just wanted to say that I really appreciate your content and perspective on the Pokemon TCG because of your marketing background. You’re so concise with your thoughts, have insights I’m not hearing on other channels, and I always look forward to your videos when they pop up onto my homepage. Keep up what you’re doing, I hope more people start to follow you!
The Pokémon market is not really like the past market. Tcg as a whole has attracted a whole new investor market. People now are buying up cases , the past were just players.
People who own these cards will not be letting them go for much less than they paid, and the whales in the hobby that have the majority of the cards/sealed stock know exactly what they are doing….Pokemon will only grow. Imagine being a 11 year old and seeing that umbreon, and one day having the funds to purchase your dream card as a kid…the cycle continues…
The difference between vintage and modern is just what you said, the old holos were common but rare today but the fact that it is 1/1000s of packs to get one card is gonna make these cards insanely valued in the future

@@jixer1495 its just how it worked out for me, i got the moonbreon in very good trade, I only paid 250$ after grading for my psa9, I pulled the Rayquaza vmax, I got the gengar vmax in a really good trade as well, only paid 150 after grading, i got a really good purchase for all the eevelutions in v and vmax psa9. So I already had many in 9 so I decided to just stick to 9s, it also much more affordable for me. My Rayquaza vmax came back a psa10 but I gave it to my brother, because he is getting all in 10s, also my gengar vmax came back a 10 and my brothers gengar vmax came back a 9 and I decided to swap him, so he can keep his psa 10 streak going, so its just how it worked out, and I’m very excited to have them in 9s at least.
Demand drives prices. There is demand currently because of the lacklustre sets of S&V for those people who came in during Covid who are still hot on Pokemon.
This is definitely an interesting take. It’s very true though with anything that’s collectible people come into the hobby and eventually they leave and at times they leave all together. I love playing the tcg and I now go to my local LGS to play with others. If Pokemon pushes the TCG harder they will definitely have a larger fan base that wants to open packs to play as well as collect. I agree with everything you said 100%.
I love when that google trends graphs pops up! I love your perspective on the alt arts. Since I found your channel and learning a lot from these videos, I have been looking forward to big landmarks in Pokemon. I think that the 30 year anniversary is the big one to look for. I love these videos they are amazing and very well put man!
Correct! Though it must be said, these alt arts when pulled are put in protective top loaders and most are sent to grade. There would be very few that are not looked after. The issue is with gold stars a lot of people didn’t look after those like today’s cards.
I got back into Pokemon (all of it) last sept. Im so happy I did! I missed all of this so much, and have since re built a nice collection of SHSW - modern. I bought a build a battle box, to re learn the TCG again (easy to forget when last time u played was 2001) and i cant get anyone to play it w me!!! 😅 I got myself a switch lite, and im almost thru lets go Pikachu. Absolutely FANTASTIC!!! I missed this SO much!
I think this alt art and special illustration era is strong man. I think it beats vintage pokemon and I hate to say this but almost beats out vintage yugioh. These modern cards are absolutely brilliant and gorgeous. I hope Pokemon can only get better but who knows. They could just lack in the future. I hope not but who the hell knows
I'd like to chime in. I'm 32 so I was around when vintage Pokemon was coming out. I have a vintage collection but I actually prize my sword and sheild alt arts more than some of my vintage. I'd almost rather own my Moonbreon over my Shadowless Charizard just because of how much cooler it looks. The texture and overall appearance of alt arts just blows my mind!
Saw a guy selling an alt art G-Moltres on marketplace for $70. Obviously for that price it's condition is more for a binder, but seeing all these cards sky-rocket is still tempting me to get it. On the other end of the spectrum, I just had a vmax Sylveon alt get a 10 from PSA. Happy days
I truly do not understand the value of some of these alt arts. I am thankful that I was able to pull the Giratina and Gengar, and traded for both alt art Rayquazas. Still haven’t been able to get the Umbreon, and that’s ok. Seeing their value go up doesn’t upset me, but I do not understand it either. If you look at the pop reports of those graded cards, you’ll see numbers in the thousands, 10k for some. You know the raw copies out there have to be high as well. Something new will come along and they will drop in price, sort of like how the sun and moon alts are preforming recently, and their numbers are much less.
The number of cards that exists from modern out of print sets will only ever go down and their quality can only go down too. The number of people will only go up. History will repeat itself.
Its fascinating to try and think about the psychology of buyers and sellers now. Its funny how even when we are one, we can't quite predict whats going to happen to the market. I do think most buyers now are millenials and millenial parents, and while demand has increased, people are more focused on investments because most people are struggling financially. With that in mind, these prices do seem a bit aspirational. I think certain product will continue to increase in price, but the influx point could very well be, im sorry to say, but when the boomers die and millenials get their inheritance. Most are not buying a home of their own accord in todays world. So its really hard to say. Its special right now because 151 is like 'new vintage' and has appeal to both old and new collectors, those cards especially just seem like the perfect storm to own longer term. But hey, new financial collapses in the interim could change everything
S&V removing alt arts and making the pull rates so generous for IR and SIR cards is what is making people realise how much better these alt arts are. Also the art on them is waaay better in most cases and most of the SnS sets features fan favourite Pokémon as the chase cards and not just Pokémon from the latest Gen which S&V is mostly doing. Also the pull rates on the SnS alts are very difficult making buying singles a lot more enticing. Boxes are also going up and are out od print, as long as the price of an booster boxes continues to climb so will the cost of all the chase cards as pulling them will become less and less viable. There is too many reasons to list as to why SnS alts will stay strong for some time to come.
I have a red eyes black dragon holo from when I was a kid that I kept score of a game I played on the back of it with a marker it's hard to look at but I keep it around
I’d say If interest declines hold strong and keep down the path you were already on, when we all grew out of Pokémon right at the beginning of post wotc for most of us atleaset now we look back and realize those were some of the best cards we missed out on, and a gold mine
Yeah I believe a pop 10k psa 10 umbreon is not anything special. The art is nice but it’s not rare I’ll wait to pick one up once the market cools. However modern sealed I think is the better investment!
Great work phil. You're right! The Pokémon TCG needs to do more to make it more playable. The last few sets weren't bad for that. However, it's not the same as Yugioh back then or One Piece now. That's also a reason why such a young TCG (OP) was able to produce chase cards that, in terms of value, far surpass the Sword and Shield alt arts. (Manga and tournament winner cards) Even though I personally think that Pokémon will always win the TCG battle for the throne in the long run.
I don’t think is going to slow down, unless we go into a war or go into the apocalypse. You have so many new players coming into the hobby and they are going to want to have these vintage alt cards. I do believe it is a good time to sell your alt cards for a profit, and we purchase them once the market cools down.
