- Can International Students in Canada Work More Than 40 Hours?
Hello everyone, welcome back to our channel! Today, we're going to talk about an important topic for international students in Canada - work hours. Specifically, we'll discuss if international students can work more than 40 hours in Canada.
As of April 30, 2024, the full-time work hours policy for certain international students in Canada will come to an end. This policy allowed a specific cohort of international students to work full-time until this date. However, after April 30th, the policy is not expected to extend further.
Currently, international students are generally allowed to work off-campus for up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session. However, during scheduled breaks such as winter and summer holidays, as well as during fall or spring reading week, students can work full-time off campus.
Students can also take on more hours or work two part-time jobs that add up to full-time work during these breaks. It's important to note that students are expected to maintain their full-time student status before and after the break.
Additionally, students can work full-time even while classes are in session if they are employed in an on-campus work setting. This includes working in any of the buildings on the school campus, or for an employer that provides on-campus services to the school.
In conclusion, while the standard off-campus work hours for international students in Canada are up to 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions, there are scenarios where students can work more than 40 hours, such as during scheduled breaks.
It's important for international students to be aware of their work rights and to comply with the regulations to maintain their student status in Canada.
