Here’s what people get wrong about the camera cutout. You’re thinking from the wrong side. It’s not cutting INTO the display real estate. It’s the opposite. The display is cutting around the camera making room on either side so the 16:10 display is under the Menu bar. Like on the iPhone. It’s not a 16:9 display with a camera cutting into the area. It’s beyond 16:9, which sits inside comfortably the rounded corners.

Where I live Apple has removed the MBA M1 512gb SSD upgrade option as a standard product (it is now a ‘custom’ build with a 4 week wait). That forces us into the MBA M2 world where it is essential to buy 512gb SSD to ensure materially better performance than the M1. The price difference is huge. It also moves us within striking distance of the MBP 14 (the MBP 13 is best discarded: there are plenty of reviews explaining why). Hello. I want to have a nice experience in areas such as video/film, note-taking, listening music, and editing, and I'm looking for a "long-lasting" device. In other words, my priorities include high-quality visuals, quality audio, writing experience, etc. MacBook M1 - 16GB - 256 (Is it unreasonable to buy it because it's 2020?) MacBook M2 - 16GB - 256 (2022) The M2 version is $230 more expensive, but I can afford it. However, some say that if the M2 doesn't have a 512GB SSD, it might experience slowness. Is this noticeable problem? I think the M2 being more recent is a good thing for longevity. Does the M2 provide a noticeable different experience compared to the M1 based on the features I'm looking for? The issue of "slowness" bothers me, especially if it doesn't have the 512GB.
The M2 Air is a brilliant design from what I have seen in the tear downs. It is quite possibly cheaper to build than the M1 Air with a $200 higher price. Genius on Apples part, or perhaps I am just being overly cynical.
@@thomasglover3834 m2 air 256 has a single 256gb ssd, m1 air 256 has two 128gb ssds so it has twice the read/write speed. From 512gb onwards there are two, it’s just the base m2 air 256gb that has that limitation. For most users it wouldn’t be noticeable, you’d only start to notice when moving large files/folders around
I know people don't seem to notice it day to day but I cannot get over the notch, feel like it completely distracts from what is otherwise a great looking laptop

M2 has better GPU benchmarks but also runs hotter -and the fan can be louder.- So thermals can be worse or you you might have more noise on the pro model. M1is comparable in CPU performance. So if you do editing work M2 would be better because if GPU, screen size, and brightness If you just use for internet browsing M1 would probably be best. edit: thanks @Mxrcy_ Knight
I would say that it all depends on what you’re going to use it for - for school and work then I’ll suggest the M2 since it’s battery life is improved & the screen display is brighter than the M1 which was a problem to a lot of people using their laptop outside. The fan won’t be as loud as others say it is & it’s thinner & lighter which is what people usually go for nowadays but if you’re in a budget then get the M1 & make sure you add Apple care to that!! Lmk which one you went for ?
M2 Issues Midnight color - chips and scuffs, fingerprint magnet SSD Issue - base model has slower SSD affecting performance during memory swapping speaker - M1 has better sounding speakers keyboard - shallower than M1, less travel trackpad - due to thinner MacBook design, not as good as M1 price - lower price to performance ratio compared to M1 in real world test (base model M2 VS base model M1) NOT GONNA BUY IT!!
I was initially mad because I bought a base model M1 right before the M2 was released. Now I feel alot better. I saved $200 and the M1 works great for my needs
I have seen many reviews that have none of these issues and I get the impression you just take Max Tech word on it as it fits with your agenda. You need to watch some videos from sensible balance reviewers, and even an audiophile said the speakers were better quality (not as loud) than the M1. The chips and scuffs could be just someone treating their machine poorly. The SSD issue is moot on anything other than 256GB and in 90% plus of cases will not be noticeable. The 10% should be using 16GB of RAM. The keyboard is subjective as I prefer shallow feel, miss the old keyboards. Trackpad is forcetrack so no idea how that is worse? $200 more list for the new design and features is fair, the XPS 13 Plus is $400 more than the older XPS 13 design, so if poor value for Apple then Dell are criminal, as at least we get new chip (XPS 13 and XPS 13 Plus have the same chips). With some tests the M2 is 30% plus better than the M1 when 16GB -v- 16GB. Also, the media engines on the M2 makes it 2X faster in some rendering. Overall given the choice, the M2 is a must buy over the M1 if you can afford it, just get 16GB as that is what you need if you are doing any pro apps or hardcore browsing. I am gonna buy it when they come in stock as already on Amazon there are discounts, but two months delivery times due to massive demand.
@@ajmarecki IMO, anybody with the M1 has no reason to upgrade to the M2. That would be like having the iPhone 13 and upgrading to the 14. If anybody has the MBA from '15 or '17 or '18, then they might be needing to upgrade for all the improvements to the M2 MBA. Am I right? Listen, the midnight color is fantastic and who cares about smudges. That's a non-issue. If you get a smudge wipe it off. That's was microfiber towels are for 🤦🏾♂
Hmmm not sure if I missed it … it seems like the processor should be the defining difference between the two. Nice to see some esthetic updates though and minor tweaks. Okay, most likely they prefer Macbook Air M1, but it's already 2 years old. buying it now there is no risk of "burning" two years of future updates by buying a product that is already a few years old?
If anything, the M1 chip has been optimized to be used for years to come. Regardless of age, that doesn’t mean the laptop is obsolete due to M2 being widely available
Here is my dilemma in todays world and for long-term longevity/durability I don’t know which MacBook version to buy between the 14” MBP M1 256 for $1600 or the low end spec’d MacBook Air for $800. I am a late 30/male/college student/going into nursing graduate program.I need to upgrade my 2013 MacBook Air. What do you think?
Literally the two I am deciding between. Let me know what you choose! The 400 dollar decrease of the 14 mbp makes me want to get it. But the price of the m1 mba makes me want to get it too lol
@@matthewgaffney9578 omgggg literally same here I can’t choose which one but I’m so far going for the m1 air for 800 mainly because it’s the cheapest one available unless you buy a slightly older one refurbished or used online
I would say the Air. You likely won't use the capabilities the Pro has to offer so it may not be worth the extra $$. Unless you're doing heavy video editing work, 3D modeling, digital artwork, etc. or any other regular activity that requires that extra power, the Air is the best option. There's probably other reasons to get the Pro, but I know Apple is known for making their Pro models to cater for the creative industry, so that's the main reason one might want the Pro.
In the Apple’s refurbished page, you can get a M2 air for $80 more than a M1. Considering it is a 2022 model, sounds like it is a better deal than getting a new M1 for $800. What you think ?
Seeing some actual real world speed comparisons would have been nice, but your saying how the M1-Proand M1-Max are _really_ different led me to check them out. I found that they are better but it's not an insane difference. So from what you've said, the M2 as such isn't really much different than the M1. It's just style stuff in the MacBook Air. So now I can comfortably keep the M1 Mac Mini I just ordered and not hang in there until the M2 Mac Mini comes out. I heard the M2 Mac Mini was going to be thinner ... I can live without that.
These videos won’t be too long if one of these ppl can say this straightaway, what you all think? 1. Buy M1 and upgrade it to 16 GB ram + 512 SSD which reaches M2 base price? 2. Buy M2 no need of upgrade specs? 3. Buy M2 and upgrade it which make the cost reach MBP price? Answer this. Considering someone who doesn’t think of upgrading to next mac in near future.

IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING BUYING A MACBOOK AIR M2 READ THIS FIRST! I have owned the M2 Air for 1 month and now have horizontal and vertical lines flickering on the screen, making it impossible to use. I was replacing a M1 MacBook Air that had the same display issue within months of buying it. They made me send the M1 in for repair twice and it failed again a third time right after the warranty expired. This was a new laptop! They refused to issue a new laptop to replace the reject I bought and since the warranty expired they expected me to pay to have it fixed again, when they didn’t fix it properly the first 2 times! The second time they falsely claimed I dropped it but they fixed it and shortly after the screen quit working completely. So… stupidly I bought an M2 Air thinking the problems were with the M1 only. Nope! I have the same display issue with the new model after 1 month!!! Apple isn't owning up to the display issues of the M Series MacBooks. In the past year I've spent almost $3,000 for 2 MacBook Airs that are now useless. I've wasted so much time sending it in for repairs, reloading apps and being without a computer while they try to fix their issues, which they obviously can't do… or won’t do because they’ll “fix” the issue, until the warranty runs out and leave you to pay for the failed laptop afterwards. It’s a trap. That’s what they did to me with the M1 and now it’s happening again with the M2. If you have a serious problem with your Mac you’ll never get a replacement; you’ll never get your money back and your work will constantly be disrupted with getting it repaired. Good Luck to you if you spend your money on one. As a long time Apple buyer/user, I now recommend you don't as it appears that Apple is not being responsible for the ones that have display issues. Additionally, if you do gamble and buy an M2 be sure to also add the additional $300.00 for the Apple warranty or you may get stuck with a large repair bill shortly after the factory warranty runs out. I feel scammed.
I saw all the anti-Apple trolls ganging up on the M2 MB Pro 13 saying how it is an olde design and why does it exist!! Absolute nonsense of course. Now the same people are hating the MB Air M2 and saying we should buy the even older MB Air M1 design! You could not make it up? So much trash talk on YT these days. Apple is the troll capital of tech. Anyway, this is a simple answer, if you can afford it pay the extra £200 in the UK for the M2 (Amazon) if all you need is the base model. Usually in tech an older chip, 18 months in this case would have a much bigger discount, closer to half price, so only £200 less is poor value, even though it is solid. The M2 chip is def much better and once optimised and with app updates and macOS Ventura, the M2 will get further and further ahead of the M1. Those recommending the M1 it may be false economy in the longer term.
TBH, only the SLIGHTLY BIGGER (by 0.3 inch) SCREEN of the M2 is what makes me wanna choose it (though I'm not really sure of its significance over the slightly smaller m1 in real world scenarios). 😅 I don't really mind the slightly better chip (arguably), slightly brighter screen, slightly better camera, slightly thinner bezels, slightly wider touchpad, slightly better speakers (arguably) magsafe, and full-sized function keys. IF ONLY the M1 and M2 both have the same screen size, then I would easily go with the older, cheaper one, the M1. 😔 APPLE knows how to play the game. 😂
Hey, CNET..... NO Windows laptop at a similar Price Point, NONE, can touch the M1 or M2 MBAs for performance, both plugged and (especially) unplugged....NONE can touch its battery life and NONE offers the build quality and fit and finish of Apple laptops. Apple wins on the Price/Performance ratio against comparably spec'd Windows offerings from AMD and Intel and likely will for the foreseeable future. If there is a better value for dollar...Please demonstrate it.
Fair points, however than calculation changes when you move out of warranty and factor in the horrific Apple after care proficiency and daylight robbery costs for basic industry components. The cost of purchasing compatible external monitors is probaby also something to keep in mind?
@@JustifyJustin Compatible monitors???....Macs can use ANY PC monitor or HDTV as a display....you don't need an "Apple-branded" monitor ....anyway...my daily driver before the purchase of my base M1 Mini in 2021 was a 2008 quad 2.8ghz Xeon Mac Pro tower..... bought used 2015....and worked hard every day....zero problems...and I even sold it for 175 bucks on FB Marketplace and quick. Performance definitely not. Cause it averagely 10% step up. In terms of life improvement, such as the magsafe, the bigger screen, better webcam, new sleek design, new speaker, then it might worth the 200 $ difference
I think that option for M2 air is overkill and there wouldn’t be a situation where you would need to use all that ram and processing power at once unless you leave like 200 tabs open on safari and have them all running in the background while processing a 5 hour audio track on logic pro and a 2 hour 8K video on final cut all at the same time and even then i think there will still be room to do more

The M2 Air is a brilliant design from what I have seen in the tear downs. It is quite possibly cheaper to build than the M1 Air with a $200 higher price. Genius on Apples part, or perhaps I am just being overly cynical.

M2 has better GPU benchmarks but also runs hotter -and the fan can be louder.- So thermals can be worse or you you might have more noise on the pro model.
M1is comparable in CPU performance.
So if you do editing work M2 would be better because if GPU, screen size, and brightness
If you just use for internet browsing M1 would probably be best.
edit: thanks @Mxrcy_ Knight
I would say that it all depends on what you’re going to use it for - for school and work then I’ll suggest the M2 since it’s battery life is improved & the screen display is brighter than the M1 which was a problem to a lot of people using their laptop outside. The fan won’t be as loud as others say it is & it’s thinner & lighter which is what
people usually go for nowadays but if you’re in a budget then get the M1 & make sure you add Apple care to that!! Lmk which one you went for ?

M2 Issues
Midnight color - chips and scuffs, fingerprint magnet
SSD Issue - base model has slower SSD affecting performance during memory swapping
speaker - M1 has better sounding speakers
keyboard - shallower than M1, less travel
trackpad - due to thinner MacBook design, not as good as M1
price - lower price to performance ratio compared to M1 in real world test (base model M2 VS base model M1)
NOT GONNA BUY IT!!
Thx - very succinct

For 400 usd more the pro is absolutely not worth it.
In the Apple’s refurbished page, you can get a M2 air for $80 more than a M1. Considering it is a 2022 model, sounds like it is a better deal than getting a new M1 for $800. What you think ?

Those recommending the M1 it may be false economy in the longer term.
oh pls don't vex yourself over this. That trillion dollar company can take care of itself.
TBH, only the SLIGHTLY BIGGER (by 0.3 inch) SCREEN of the M2 is what makes me wanna choose it (though I'm not really sure of its significance over the slightly smaller m1 in real world scenarios). 😅
I don't really mind the
slightly better chip (arguably),
slightly brighter screen,
slightly better camera,
slightly thinner bezels,
slightly wider touchpad,
slightly better speakers (arguably)
magsafe,
and full-sized function keys.
IF ONLY the M1 and M2 both have the same screen size, then I would easily go with the older, cheaper one, the M1. 😔
