I worked with a man named Harald Myrold who was on that ferry when it was sunk, he was about a year old when he and his mother boarded the ferry, both survived the sinking. He became a crab fisherman in Alaska and love to tell the story of surviving that sinking ship as an infant.

There is an old episode of Hogan’s Heroes where a truck with heavy water is stored in the prison camp, and Hogan convinces Colonel Klink that it’s Fountain of Youth water. 😂
Nothing would really happen if you drank heavy water, you'd get dizzy after the second glass (because it would replace the regular water in your ear) but that's about it. That's not to say you should drink it all the time, though. If the deuterium in heavy water replaces too much of the normal hydrogen in your body, it could start to mess with the chemical properties in your cells. Which would lead to things like sterilization.
I remember my dad taking me to the movies as a boy to see the movie "The Heroes Of Telemark" about the commando raid on the heavy water operation at the hydro facility.

Good one this , another doc' saw divers locate the wreck of the ferry and rail wagons and barrels on the lake bed all remarkabley intact , they brought a barrel to the surface and took it to a lab.Its contents confirmed it was heavy water .
I saw this exact mission re-enacted in Arma 3 watching Sovietwomble trudge through the snow trying not to be seen only for his whole unit to be seen and fired upon when they got close to the plants gates.
One question I've never understood, why was there a Heavy Water (deuterium) plant in what looked like no-where Norway at a time when there was only a handful of people on the Planet that actually knew what it was for?
If you'll recall Norway already had heavy water production in place before Germany took over their country, and I think it was a combination of preexisting know-how and an opportune location since heavy water production required both a lot of water as well as energy to separate it out from non-heavy water. As far as general reasons for making it, I think people don't really appreciate how widespread the sharing of nuclear research was before the US started the Manhattan Project and suddenly went dark with any sharing.😊 The secrets were mostly concerned with producing and refining U235, and finally achieving critical mass in a way that would liberate all the energy as an explosion vs. having subcritical uranium pieces fly apart or just glow blue when it went critical, as with the Demon Core that killed people (After several days of agony) when the two halves came together and achieved criticality with an enormous neutron flux.
If you do some simple research into the topic with the means you clearly have at your disposal, plus a little critical thinking about this period being the infancy of atomic technology, I'm sure you'll find the answers you seek. I mean, you're almost there by yourself. Almost.
It took even the most industrially powerful country the goddamn USA till past August 1945 to actually made a functional atomic bomb despite being made the top priority research project, one could wonder how long it would take for a war torn Germany. In hindsight, it was actually beneficial for the German Fuhrer and High Command to not pursue the atomic bomb project as it would only draw precious resources from more practical projects, and only to have its halfway research be seized by the Soviets or Allies as they came knocking on Germany doors, just like the V2 rocket program, and likely much earlier than May 1945 if they had focused on the atomic stuff.

I know nothing!
General Burghalter "who is this man Hogan??"
Yep. I remember that one.
Sweden exported heavy water from a factory in Ljungaverk.
It was also sabotaged by British agents in 1944.
I remember my dad taking me to the movies as a boy to see the movie "The Heroes Of Telemark" about the commando raid on the heavy water operation at the hydro facility.
Except the nazi's never got the Frisch-Peierls memorandum, and never considered calculating the critical mass using Uranium 235....
This channel is AMAZING.....Thanks very much 👍

Amazing Enough to mention the start of WW2 for Americans. December 7th, 1941? No, they didn't. Hopefully, you did.
The Kon-Tiki the raft skippered by Thor hyadal, had a radio operator on it who was once a resistance fighter in Norway.
was that the one that crossed the pacific with ancient tech? sry its been awhile, but Thor was one hell of an explorer!
You never disappoint when it comes to how interesting your content is. Keep up the great work.
You just start learning about WW2 yesterday?
Thomas, what if they did? They might be 12, or 62. Either way, how is being snarky going to help? Get over yourself.

Heavy water production was not the primary function of the Vermork plant.
The hydroelectric power plant was more focused on producing electricity, the research portion of the plant was more of a side project than the focus .

Can you imagine - Nazis with Nukes ? We would be living in a far different world, friends.
Or even worse, the communists with nukes? Oh yeah, we actually lived with that one . . . and still are today.
The Nazi were far closer to having practical nuclear weapons than most people realize.

As I understand it Heavy water is a byproduct of Hydro electric production? So the plant was mainly interested in Hydro power not Heavy water.
The Nazi were working on a nuke which is why the Brit’s went after it twice.
it was a byproduct off the making fertilizer.
There was also two factors in Sweden, that produce heavy water.
