- The current flag of Chicago is one of the best city flags anywhere on earth. To kick off the Flag Explainer series, I venture to the Windy City (in the middle of the winter) to explain every detail of the Chicago Flag.

From what I remember, had Chicago won the 2016 Olympics, the plan was to add a fifth star to commemorate it. But that may have just been an idea more than an actual plan.
That would be in line with the others and is probably the strongest reason I’ve heard. But glad they didn’t I guess!
Dude! This is so good. I follow you on the clock app and this is such a nice complement to the stuff you do there to this, more in-depth dive into the flags. And the production is nothing short of tv worthy.
Thanks so much! That means a lot. Still a one-man team with all of it, but who knows what the future holds!
This is so dope!! I just left Chicago for Oregon, and let me tell you: for being a beautiful state, the flag of the state of Oregon sure doesn't reflect it!
Agreed. Working on a better one and hopefully it is as beautiful as Oregon!
Quality content and very educational. I want to see more. Now turn your hat around. Lol
My favorite city, favorite flag, and possible new favorite account.
I strive to please!
Such a cool video! Would love to see you interview locals about what they think about their flag!
That could be cool, but maybe not much “return on investment” of production costs, unless really well-qualified interviewees could be arranged.
this is the content im here for
Welcome sir.
Welcome to Chicago!!! Thanks for being a trooper during our cold week! You rock for so many reasons!
Absolutely loved this man.
Phenomenal content bud. Production quality was great and I loved the walk-and-talk style vlog for something like this. I’m pretty sure I saw on Instagram a while back that you guys had just moved to Indy so I’m looking forward to that episode as a native myself
An Indy flag explainer is coming up next!
I'd prefer that the flag stay as it is. No more stars. Unless, maybe, if there is an event that is as eventful as the ones that the other stars represent. Thank you so much for making this video. I've lived in Chicago for over ten years and I'm hooked on this flag but never knew what it represented.
So glad you found it helpful!
I’ve been following your work since your TEDx talk and am so excited to see where you take this channel. Congrats on the success of Flags for Good, I rep the stickers daily and sport a few flags at home!
Aw thanks so much! That means a lot. Tag us in pics of all that!
WOW your video is outstanding as well as educational. Great job MICHAEL.
Looking forward to future Videos.

This was fantastic Michael! I really enjoyed your script, ad libs, and production. Great story telling! Loved all the b roll too. Looking forward to more!
As a non-native Cubs fan, I’d say add a star for that elusive World Series victory in 2016! But it’s not my city, and there’s a whole bunch of south-siders that might not agree, LOL.
As a White Sox fan, maybe the 5th star could represent all the different championships! Since the star has 6 points, each point can represent a different sports team: Fire, Bulls, Cubs, Sox, Blackhawks, and Bears!
Although, I'll admit, I like the simplicity of just 4 stars.
Dope describes my rhymes, making all you emcees cold drop like dimes. You know MCSC is back again, and battling me on the microphone is like committing a sin.
Scott/MCSC
This rocks. Love your style. Thanks for making this.
As others have commented, this is fantastic stuff!! Agree with you. It has been the same for so long they should leave it as is. Cheers!
Michael - you KILLED it! So good! I loved every moment of the video and would echo all the other complimentary comments that precede mine here. You're 100% right about people being so into this flag as to have it tattooed on them. I see them all over the place. Probably would have had one, myself, except for an unfortunate experience with Chicago police that left me a bit less enthusiastic about putting the flag into my skin.
Though if you design a variation (not an improvement ... a variation) of the Chicago flag, who knows? It may end up being my next tat!
Thanks, Theo!
The Chicago flag is so fantastic unfortunately our state flag doesn't exactly follow that trend
Agreed. Still working on a “Better State Flag” of Illinois. Subscribe to our email list to be notified when it comes out!
Awesome stuff ty for sharing
Absolutely wonderful video! I enjoyed this tremendously and I can’t wait to see more
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great job! I stuck around!
Me, too; I felt richly rewarded for spending my time with the video, and the comments, too. And, I really appreciate the head-nod to the brick & mortar store came at the end-IF I find myself in the neighborhood of my mother’s roots, I would like to make a stop there.
It may be a fight between Chicagoans and Marylanders over who loves their flag more, but imo Chicago is a better flag
You explain this so well! I can't wait to see how your content will evolve! Could you make a video about the flag of the Brussels Capital-Region? It's not really liked by the general public here but I love it personally much better then the previous one.
I'm headed to Europe next month to do some flag features! I'll add this to the todo list for maybe another Europe trip.
@@FlagsForGood If you are ever in Belgium I would love to be your gide!
Such a great video!
Great deep dive on the flag and Chicago history. Can you do something similar for the PDX flag?
I'll take any excuse to get up to the PNW again!
Thank you a lot a loved your explanation!!! Nice to know about Chicago Flag🇺🇸
Thanks, Michael. Your explanations are a boon to vexillologists and non-vexillologists alike.
Awesome job. I can't think of more than just Chicago's flag. What other good ones are there?
Indy, Phoenix, Madison, Denver, all videos to come!
This was so good! Also, now I know if I want a flag from you I can just head to Chicago from the burbs.
Tell them I said hi if you do!
@@FlagsForGood will do
If the city was ever to get a 5th star. I think it would have to be for the Sears Tower construction
That’s what I vote for at the museum
Very good video!
Thank you very much!
Great video! Keep them coming! Would love to see more flags explained videos! I also got my
Pan-Africa flag today. So excited to fly it on my house.
Awesome! Great to hear!
Hey, you leave Detroit's flag alone!
EDIT: I find it hard to believe that a man that was Ivy League educated in the late 1800s wasn't aware of George Washington's HQ standard.
If Chicago were going to add a star for anything, it should be for hosting the world's first experimental fission reactor. COVID-19 doesn't merit a star if the Spanish Flu doesn't.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but this was really good! Do you think you could share your thoughts on the Boston city flag someday?
Oh for sure. Probably gonna be a UA-cam Short/Tiktok because my thoughts are...brief.
Seems like Amsterdam is on your radar then hopefully!! Can't wait to see the rest of your work both here on UA-cam and also in your better states flag series!
Oh it's HIGH on the list...
I've heard a lot of people make the case for a 5th star with the Cubs breaking the curse and winning the World Series. After seeing the parade I think it might be fitting.
If you want to add a star for a Cubs WS victory, what about the Sox win in 2005? What about the Bears in '85? Cubs in 1907, 08? Sox 1906? All the Bulls wins? There's more to this town than the Cubs. Stars should not be added for sports victories.
@@shelbywoodard8695 I agree with the idea that sports aren’t really significant enough to have as profound an impact as changing the flag, despite how awesome some games might be. :)
as an Angeleno now living in Chicago... LA NEXT PLS
Any excuse to go back to LA!
I have followed your website for awhile & this video is the start of what I trust will be a collection of videos that not only explain but also prod some municipalities to change or update their flags. In NYC there is a debate raging over our city seal with its outdated depictions of a Dutch seaman &a Native American. Perhaps you can discuss that at some point.
Totally will do!
i think they should add 6 stars in the Chicago Flag
To represent every NBA championships Michael Jordan Won LMAO
I was hoping the fourth represented the '68 Democratic Convention ..
Definitely think it should never be changed. They're in the process of changing the county flag for the Chicago-area and the new ones are hideous.
There are two recent things that people have talked about adding a fifth star for. The first didn't happen: Chicago 2016 Summer Olympics. The second is the election of Barack Obama, the first POTUS with strong Chicago ties. While I think this would certainly be worthy in spirit, I tend to agree that it's pretty set in stone as it is now.
Yeah it would be such a debate that probably wouldn’t be worth any politicians time or political capital.
I think they should delay for fifty years after an event before deciding to add a comemerative star to the flag. You need time to pass to have proper perspective. I don't think the Willis Tower or covid meet the standard for adding stars. Covid wasn't a uniquely Chicago event and was actually worse in some other cities. Willis Tower is a private commercial venture. While it's iconic, it's does not widely effect the culture of the city. It's not for or of the people at large. What happens when they eventually build something larger. Clear guidelines need to be adopted.....after the city fixes some serious problems.
That's a great idea. There are some places that put this kind of delay on naming things after people as well.
I loved it! When you discussed the 5th star, what immediately jumped to mind is the 1968 Democratic Convention protest and police brutality. Sure, it's a bad stain on Chicago, but the fire isn't a good thing, either. Remembering tragedy is important, and it's one of the first things I think of if you ask me about Chicago. World's Fair, Fire, 1968 Convention. And the Blues Brothers. We fly 3 of your flags on the front of our house. Keep waving, Michael!
Cm Punk flag
Yep CM Punk's hometown flag..It's the most iconic flag
When Chicago bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, some alderman posited that they should add a fifth star for that, which would be in keeping with the World's Fair and Century of Progress stars.
That would make the most sense. Alas. Maybe in the future.
And how did that turn out?
@@markrichards6863 grow up
@@42Strangelove Chicago lost the bid. The games were in Rio. Why would Chicago add a star for the Rio Olympics. So, you grow up.
