  • You don't need a PhD to understand used oil analysis. Certified Lubrication Specialist Lake Speed Jr. walks you through the process of used oil analysis. Each of the four laboratory tests are explained in plain language. Your engine has a story to tell, and the used oil analysis lets you hear that story.
    The next step in listening to your engine is reading the report. After that, trend analysis is the "early warning, doppler radar" for your engine. Here are some links to videos that describe the whole process.

    Good content what are you thoughts on hexagonal boron nitrate as a oil lubricant

    • @themotoroilgeek
      @themotoroilgeek  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the question. In my experience, any solid particle additive in the oil increases wear in the long term. The best wear protection additives react chemically with the surface to create a thin, sacrificial film. In my testing, the solid particles increase abrasive wear over time. We have some independent research going right now, so we hope to have a video on this subject early next year.

      @@themotoroilgeek during lock down I was online and went down a rabbit hole of lubrican information and found a few articles of hbn as a oil lubricant and the study results were positive but how certain particles and different metals react together under heat and pressure is way above my pay grade 😂 I know oil manufacturing is a business and marketing is important for sales I guess as consumers we need your skills to help us along the way its the additive package in the oils that help protect but why do they vary in amounts of said ingredients I mean if they find the perfect formula for engine protection why change it or is it an ongoing science of results and engine variables and emission standards

    • @themotoroilgeek
      @themotoroilgeek  Рік тому

      @@jonschwartz9669 Ahh, yes! Oil chemistry and how things interact is highly complex, and things do change because of emissions and fuel economy mandates. As such, it is an ever evolving balancing act, and that is the key perspective. Oil performance is about the balance between the base oils and all the individual additives. It is not a sum of the parts. It is the synergies amongst the components.
      That's one of the reasons for starting this channel - to go beyond the marketing and "backyard science" and get to the real stuff.

    Got a question for you about my build and what oil weight I was to use. I have 6.0 with high lift cam and ls7 lifters and the other basic mods to go with that. Engine builder was adamant about 10w40 conventional only, no synth oil! He claims synth oil causes wear in the valve train and he has no issue with it, only issues with synth oil. What have you noticed when using Driven oil with engines like this ?

    • @themotoroilgeek
      @themotoroilgeek  Рік тому +1

      The problem is not with the oil being synthetic or conventional. Valvetrain wear is primarily about the additive package. I’ve seen great results with the synthetic blend GP-1 oils. In fact, the lowest valvetrain wear I’ve seen is with the GP-1 oils.

    IF you can't just keep your dick skinners off your car's start switch, at the very least allow it reach operating temperature. In a previous life I was a maintenance manager responsible for equipment that operated normally with electric motors, but each electric motor had 2 internal combustion backups that were required by ANSI standards to be started weekly at a minimum. The only measure that kept us from changing the oil almost monthly, was to ensure the motor got up to operating temperature any time it was started.
