Miskin Yûnus. My mother loves him, thus named me after him :) For native Turkish speakers his poems resound in the heart profoundly. I love him.

As a native Turkish speaker i can say his poems are in vernacular language but they are truly profound. With these simple words he reaches deepest zones of our soul. They make me cry actually. I know some of his poems by heart. I also think his understanding of God has similarities with Ibn Arabi.
Evet abicim haklısın
Even in Bosnia we have his poetry and still till this day sing his poetry during gatherings and in mosques.
Thank you for your wonderful videos ❤
I love his poems. Let me make a translation of one of my favourite:
Owner of the goods, owner of the properties,
Where is the first owner of all of these ?
Goods are fake, properties are lie...
You go there and linger for a while.
This does not have %100 same meaning but it's close to that. I tried to make it look like a proper poem with harmony and rhyme.
Bu şiiren adı ne?

Var biraz da sen oyalan.
Yunus Emre
Who is the first owner? what a great way to think about ownership of things. Thank you for sharing

I read the translation of one of the poems in which worldly posseeions are said to be a lie and I am struck of the similarity with concept of Maya as in hindu religion which is so much different in many of its principles from Islam
What strikes most is the similarity of sufiism with basic human qualities as propagated by most of world's great religions. Why don't we follow them and iron out the differences. I am really pained seeing how we relish the differences and not similarities
Namaste!
I am from India and watched Yunus Emre series, from there I fell in love with Yunus Emre. I feel loved. Thanks alot for making this video on my favourite soul... Yunus Emre!💖

01:53 I believe that every single citizen in Türkiye, no matter what nationality she/he has, can read some parts of his poems by heart. Because, to us, they are like proverbs now.
We often don't realize we're quoting Yunus when we're doing it.
We have his face literally on the most valuable turkish banknote.
I watched the TV series on TRT UA-cam. I finished the whole series in 4 days. Couldn't stop. I only slept a few hours at night. Loved it so much. I'll start again. Absolutely golden. ❤
I bought a bumper sticker in Turkey about 25 years ago with the words; "Let us love be loved for none of us will be left this Earth". It was a line from a Yunus Emre poem. I'd never heard of him at the time, although I am a Sufi, and was on a pilgrimage to Konya to visit Rumi's Tekke. Since then I've watched two televised versions of his life, and have read much of his poetry. Being a poet myself I was keen to read his work once I'd discovered him. I love your passion for study, and the work you put into your content. I've learned a lot about Islamic history from your channel, and World religion in general, so I sincerely thank you for your efforts. I would love to see all your Sufi material in one book, it would be great reference material in a teaching contest. I don't teach now I'm 67 and retired, but I never stop studying World history, culture, and religion. I have a Phd. in Literary Theory and Cultural History, but as I'm sure you know, travelling, and mixing with other cultures, can teach you things you won't learn at university. May Allah grant you a great reward my brother.
Beautiful story
You should make a video about Turkish Bektashi Dervish-Bard Kaygusuz Abdal too
I see Yunus Emre every day on the bell tower at Gaziantep University. I have been reading an English translation of his work. What a wonderful surprise to see one of my favorite UA-cam channels offer a video about him. Thank you!
i was always distant to my culture because of the bad experiences i had with islamic regimes . but you made me think that i should be aware of there are many ways of understanding a thing and its in peoples hands to use that thing for good or bad. thanks
As a non-Muslim who hasn't had the opportunity to study Arabic or related languages, I really appreciate how well you convey these linguistic features and connotations which seem to have been deeply important for the mystical traditions in Islam. Great work as always, thank you for the enlightening content!
not meant to come off as hostile, I just want to note that Turkish, Arabic, and Persian are all unrelated, but did shape each other later on. However, Turkish is a Turkic language and arguably shares similarities (originally) with the same as Japanese, whereas Persian is an indo-Germanic language and Arabic a semitic language.
This is significant when it comes to how certain terms need to be interpreted, and how thoughts are carried over into the different langauge. Within Islamic culture, it is recommended to know at least something about all three of them.
Would it possible to do a video on the Bektashi Order? The only thing I know about is that the Janissaries were followers of it, but nothing else!
sure, ua-cam.com/video/KFyi8hmADak/v-deo.html
Yeah, that's definitely a Sufi order I want to do an episode on eventually. Really interesting stuff.
seconding this
I'd love to see some videos of yours from a "literary" or narratological standpoint. Everyone knows about the immense semiological charge of biblical stories, but other religions are rarely talked about from this angle.
For example, many Greek myths have carefully crafted character arcs and tragic structures that make them very human despite how monumental the scope is. In that sense, besides its cosmological and religious character, the myth gets an aesthetic end. I'm told this is also true of the Vedas.
I think that's something that has barely been explored on UA-cam, and one that would make a lot of people from different backgrounds interested, since, despite the differences in faith and worship, everyone can admire a good story.
Thanks for the great work 👍🤜
ua-cam.com/video/Y1pMaGrkwrc/v-deo.html
Interesting idea!
Many of the jatakas (stories of alleged previous incarnations of Sakyamuni) within Buddhism are ancient folktales that were incorporated (and amended as needed) into the tradition for teaching purposes.
Definitely need to make a video on Haji Bektashi Veli

Excellent lecture.
Kindly make a detailed video on "Shams Al Maarif"
He made one though but a detailed video would be awesome. Because it is the one of most mysterious books of kind in occult science and magic.

I first learned about Yunus Emre through Özgur Baba's musical interpretations of some of his work. I'm very happy to see you devoting a whole episode to him. To anyone reading this who doesn't know Özgur Baba, look him up!
You are such an amazing scholar, storyteller. Such a pleasure to watch your work.
Excellent , never heard of any Turkish poet before other than Rumi. Every day is a school day .
Rumi was originally Iranian Afghan.
@@Leo-ue6xz he was Iranian Khurasani which makes him a tajik (eastern iranian or persian)

The function of the Asik as described here reminds me of the troubadours of languedoc in medieval France. They traveled and sang of love, apparently as a metaphor for love of God.

Now you talked about Yunus Emre, You should talk about Alevi Leaders like Hacı Bektaş, Balım Sultan, Hacı Bayramı Veli, Nesimi, Hatayi, Fuzuli, Pir Sultan Abdal, Kul Himmet, Yemini, Virani. etc... as well as Alevism in general. I have been waiting for a video on Alevism since you talked about Druze and Alawites.
Yes. You can't mention the Bektashi order, and not discuss Alevism at least a little. I made several Alevi friends when I worked in Turkey for a few years (Turkish, Kormanci, and Zaza) so I am desperate for more discussion about this.
Great video, very comprehensive and it flows like a stream of water.

Excellent video. I think it would be really interesting to see a collab between you and Paul from Blogging Theology in the near future.
As a Turkish person, this video was one of the best contents which I have ever watched about Yunus Emre and his sufism in English language. Yunus in Turkey's history of literature is like Shakespare for England. I strongly suggest people who are still unaware of the development of the Turkish language and Turkish sufi order to read Yunus, watch about a recent TV serial by TRT, called: Yunus Emre Aşkın Yolculuğu. Thanks Filip for your very informative and well-documented introduction to Yunus Emre and his age. Greetings from Ankara...

Let's talk about seven great Alevi bards. Nesimi, Hatayi, Fuzuli, Pir Sultan Abdal, Kul Himmet, Yemini, Virani.
His poems are more understandable than Ottoman Turkish poems from late Ottoman period.
Hmm. Interesting. Why do you suppose that is?
@@juniorjames7076 Late Ottoman Turkish poems contains too much Persian and Arabic words. In fact, Ottoman Turkish wasn't daily speaking language among the Turkish people in Anatolia. It was kinda palace's and elite's language. Modern day Turkish is closer to Old Anatolian Turkish which is real Turkish that comes from Central Asia.
@@newtonyukuk Thank you for the explanation. I find this facinating!!!

Although the rhythm, melody and meaning of the original language could not be captured in the translation of the poems, I identified your feelings about being affected when you listen to the poem even without knowing the original language with a verse of Yunus:
"Let the deaf listen to the dumb
Dumb and deaf words needs soul to understand."
(''Dilsizler haberini kulaksız dinleyesi.
Dilsiz kulaksız sözün can gerek anlayası'' the original text)
Yunus speaks the language of unity. His words come deep into our souls, where there is no world of separation or duality. You can always smell it in any language.😄
Can modern readers of Turkish language, understand fully Yunus Emre?
His language must be old
@@burhan8147His language is not old. Turks can understand Yunus Emre's poems.Because Yunus Emre uses easy words and words of the people. But he makes sentences that are difficult to understand with easy words. He makes a perfect combination. We call it "sehlimümteni".
Thanks!
One more part of ameteur translation of a part of his poem:
Wisdom is knowing learning,
Wisdom is knowing yourself,
If you don't know yourself,
Your learning has no meaning.
The thing with Yunus Emre is that pretty much anyone who can comprehend his poems loves him. He's not just a sufi he's a genius with words and overall loveable person. I'm not a muslim nor a believer in that regard but he just amazes me all the same. Many of his lines are like proverbs here in Turkey, you could be talking with his words without even knowing it :)

Thank you very much for your work. Yunus is very dear to Turkish people.
like it hearts touching poetry
The best thing about Yunus is that his simple but at the same time magical words. And also he makes fun of the people see religion only excessive praying . He is on the side of people , not governors and priests . He is not a very successful man , he makes mistakes like all of us . He carried wood to tekke for 40 years to reach perfectness in it , so he is patient and knows he is a simple being . He is the poet can be accepted and understood also by non religious people .
Would you be interested in making a video about Waris Ali Shah? He is my namesake and I would love to learn more about him.
I don't know if reincarnation is real - I think it both is and isn't - but IF there is such a thing it would not only explain why such souls as Filip seems so way much deeper than most of us, but also this persistent feeling that I am watching a real Sheik explaining the sufi mystical faith and teachings every time I watch his videos.
Reincarnation is not real.
@@dindenwaliyyu2127 I must say I somewhat disagree from my experience. I am researching the subject and there certainly seems to be a good portion of it that is 'real'. But we might also question what 'real' means ofcourse
Beautiful comment! Thank you.
@@juniorjames7076 Cheers, friend.
It would be helpful to recommend a reliable English translation of the poetry. I've read a couple of different ones but I feel they are somehow lacking. Thank you for what you do so well.
Bad translations is why I haven't been able to connect with Turkish novelists like Orhan Pamuk. Like you said, "....something lacking." Unlike novels by Arab novelists like Naguib Mahfouz who I feel had excellent translations which drew me further into Arab/Egyptian culture. Turkish literary works need BETTER TRANSLATORS! There, I said it! Anyone disagree?
The connection between conversion and poetry, as is asserted here, is an indication of duplicity or an estrangement from God.
