  • We all want the fish in our aquariums to stay healthy. Unfortunately, like humans, fish may become ill from time to time.
    You can dramatically reduce the likelihood of a disease entering your aquarium by purchasing livestock from a reputable source and quarantining all new arrivals before placing them into your display tank. That way, you do not risk exposing healthy fish to a disease or parasite that your new addition is carrying.
    Sometimes, despite our best efforts, illness can set in no matter how many precautionary measures we have taken. That is why we are going to share some of the most common and effective fish medications so you will be ready to treat your fish the instant you observe signs of ich, velvet and other external parasites or illnesses.

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  5 років тому

      Filter floss is perfectly safe for use with Cupramine so long as the filter material is not coated with some absorbent chemical or media.
      Check out this article on the Lifecycle of Ich, it is pretty important to understand when treating at home. It is likely you experienced an infection from eggs that stayed alive on your substrate.

      @BulkReefSupply  7 років тому +1

      Cichlid's color depends greatly on their diet. If you have not already I would recommend looking for a Cichlid blend of food or possibly switching to a new brand. Another thing to look at would be your water quality as poor parameters can stress the fish and reduce their colors.

    Can I feed medicated food while using poly lab's medic? Also, I know it is off topic.. But the heniochos butterfly fish is one of my favorite fish, but I have a reef tank and have always been told that they are not reef safe. How does yours do? If I knew it was safe I would get one in a second!! That and a regal tang are two of my favorite fish, but I have been advised against getting them... What are your thoughts on it?

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  8 років тому +1

      +Ashley L Hello and thanks so much for watching our videos!
      I never recommend mixing medications; in reality it depends on the medicated food you are using.
      Heniochus Banner Fish are beautiful aquarium fish and do very well. They get quite large and have a tendency to eat and pick at various corals; many hobbyists report that as they get older they get more and more destructive. Just be sure you have a tank that is large enough to house them and expect the natural behavior to show.
      Regal Tangs are also great fish and this is a much more "reef-safe" option compared to the Banner Fish. A large tank of 90 gallons or larger is best with a primarily herbivorous diet.
      Take care and happy reef keeping!
      -Robert

      +Marine Depot Aquarium Supplies thank you, I love watching them!
      Thanks for the advice, I will watch that closely and not medicate both food and water.
      I'm sorry, I meant a regal angelfish... Not a regal tang. My mistake. Do you think they can be kept safely in a reef tank?

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  8 років тому +1

      +Ashley L Glad to help. The Regal Angels do have a taste for some corals but if you get it young, acclimate properly and provide hefty portions of the proper nutrition, they will do fine in a mixed reef. Just don't be surprised if you wake up to find the fish nipping at corals.
      Take care and happy reef keeping!

    Hi I have no idea if anyone will see this. But at the moment many of my fish have white spot and tail rot and the medicine we got for them is a bright green. I did not think much of it till I poured it into the tank and it turned my entire tank water a bright green. I don't know if that's normal or what's meant to happen and I'm panicking a lot at the moment so can someone please help me I really don't want these fish to die!
    I would also like to add that the instructions on the bottle just told us dosage rates and how frequently you should use it. It did not state any how to add it to the tank or how it wa smear to look when added or warning for if something went wrong

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  2 роки тому

      White spots are most likely ich or velvet. Velvet kills very quickly and the dots appear in greater numbers. Ich is less deadly and a healthy fish can usually fight it off on their own with good nutrition and water quality. As a general rule of thumb, if you can count the dots on the fish, it's usually ich. If not, it's more likely to be velvet.
      Copper based medications are not reef safe, so if you're treating, it's best to move the fish to a dedicated QT system.

    Do you have to have your quarantine tank set up all the time

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  6 років тому

      No, as long as you keep some biological media in your display tank alive, you can certainly set up a quarantine on an as needed basis. Use water from your display along with the biological media to set-up the isolation tank and you should be fine so long as it is not overstocked.

    Hi I noticed a couple of my fish is starting to get it I was able to catch a couple of them and put them in a QT tank and started treatment.
    My question is there is a few in my reef tank that I’m unable to catch what can I use to treat my reef tank and keep my corals safe?

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  5 років тому

      I would continue to try and catch the fish, this will allow you to use a stronger medication in the QT. This also allows the Ich to sort of die out inside the DT, without a host (fish) the parasite cannot continue to survive but will take 3 months or longer for it to really go dormant and reduce the numbers in your DT.
      The best option for medicating with corals and invertebrates is a healthy diet using a quality food soak such as Selcon and Garlic alongside Ruby Reef Rally.

    what size Q tank do you recommend for Achilles tang

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  7 років тому +2

      Adult Achilles tangs get very large and need plenty of swimming space so if you are quarantining them you would need something close to the 100 gallon range to be safe. Tangs especially need the room as if they are in too small of a tank they will stress and their immune system will be further compromised.

All of a sudden he stopped eating, he was swimming in circles at the bottom of the tank, a little jerky, I then tried erythomyicin (no luck) moved to amoxicillan, he seemed better, actually ate. • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  6 років тому +2

      Yes, medications in a display aquarium can have an effect on other fish that are not necessarily ill. Whether the effects are negative or positive just depends on the particular situation. The best practice is to use a quarantine or isolation aquarium to medicate your fish but if this is not possible, medicating directly in the display is a suitable option.

For freshwater; I generally recommend PimaFix and MelaFix treatments as they are fairly safe and can be used together to attack a variety of different ailments.
