Black Pro Mist filters have become a popular tool among photographers and videographers seeking to elevate their work. These filters subtly reduce contrast and add a soft, ethereal quality to images and videos. By scattering light via black particles in the glass, they create a more cinematic and atmospheric look, often referred to as a "dreamy" or "hazy" effect.
A black pro mist filter is essentially a neutral density (ND) filter with a unique diffusion effect. Unlike traditional ND filters, which simply reduce the overall amount of light entering the lens, black pro mist filters also soften the image, reducing harsh shadows and highlights. This makes them ideal for outdoor photography in bright conditions, as they can help to balance the exposure and create a more pleasing image.
When comparing different black pro mist filters, factors such as brand reputation, build quality, and optical clarity are important considerations. Popular brands like K&F Concept offer a range of black pro mist filters in various strengths, from 1/4 to 1/2 stops.
To get the most out of your black pro mist filter, it's essential to experiment with different settings and lighting conditions. You will still have to search for scenes that will best compliment having the filter attached to your lens. However from my experience K&F's filter doesn't need to be taken off when shooting photos that won't benefit from the black mist filters unique look, so you can keep it ojn your camera all day and shoot as you normally would.

I've had very mixed results with black mist filters. I don't know why, but lightspots must have been reflected by something, since I could trace back every reflection spot to an actual lightsource on the opposite side of the picture. Imagine a line of streetlights and a corresponding line of spots mirrored on the other side of the picture. Kind of strange, but since I've had that effect on several occasions, I guessed it's maybe the lens or the filters rim. (Tiffen in my case...)
Anyway... on using your partner as a stand-in: we've just been to South Africa and took a lot of pictures on the coast, and someone standing on the rocks in front of crashing waves as a size reference is really nice to have.
@@derCrummel have you tried using a step up ring inbetween your filter and your lens? If there’s some distance between the lens it helps to scatter the light better. But other than that, very strange, could definitely just be the brand or the lens like you say.
Indeed, always helps to have somebody with you to shove in the frame when you need it haha! I often use myself as well but that’s not viable in the city really 😂
Super location. Nice product promo, Greg. Item has been covered many times on YT, frequently including night scenes to emphasize mist effect when there’s a light source in frame. Shadow pics work well. Brother between columns might have been better as vertical, IMO.
Did you notice any AF responsiveness or accuracy differences when using the filter?
Beer and coffee “pubs”, eh? OK😊
Suggestion: number pics to facilitate viewer comment.
Cheers!
@@paulm8157 Cheers Paul! First time catching your comment before I’m asleep 😂 must be a Sunday thing! - hmm nothing different I noticed about the AF on that day but I’ll see how it plays out over the next few weeks! Definitely keen to use it at night that’s for sure, especially with the Christmas lights no doubt making an appearance soon 🫣 - have a good one fella! 🫡
@@DISTANTMEDIA Yeah, my comments tend to put folks asleep.😂

thanks for the tips greg , another nice one ,, i buy a bit gear from k&f and find for the price you can,t go wrong ,, so your brother is in edinburgh now ,, not to close and not to far away eh ,, as nottingham is quite a treck and you seem to get on ok,, tar
You're welcome fella, thanks for watching! I agree they strike a very awesome middle ground of good price for good quality! In fact their filters are the best I've used in terms of no vignetting etc! -- Yes moved to do his masters up there, definitely easier to meet up with him now so will probably be shooting there often haha!
@@DISTANTMEDIA next time you go up to meet your brother , if you go up the A1 not far over the border pop into saint abbs an a nice walk to the lighthouse... BUT .. about 3 miles further north there is a little harbour called.... cove .... its a lovely little place to take photos ..
@ thanks for the recommendation mate! Have never been to that stretch of the coast before so will definitely try and get there over the coming months!
Once I gave my daughter my analogue camera (the Olympus LC of my mother) all set and asked her to take my portrait looking out of the frame. She cut it that I was looking from the short side, but the picture was great. A professional photographer commented that she thought the picture was genius. So sometimes doing not what is commonly thought is the right way to go. Breaking the rules was good in this case.
oh yes its definitely a case by case basis! No shoe ever fits all when it comes to what works and doesn't in a photo. if the feet are present or walking motion is present then I think it has a much bigger effect on the final result than in most other cases. And of course sometimes its a stranger so you cant tell them to turn around 🤣 - Awesome story by the way loved hearing that!!
