Theobald found himself to be the unlikely spark which started the fourth crusade, but his doubts and fears convinced him that he was to only be the messenger of this great calling.
That is why he and his wife left for Paris to celebrate Christmas at 1199. There, at the court of king Philip II of France he awaited his audience and the moment for him to make the most important speech of his life.
