Incredibly timely to find this video. All of the shocks on my 98 Frontier are completely shot, and I was hoping it would be an easy enough process to replace them. Time to get at it. Thanks for this!
Truck's been riding rough since I bought it a couple of years ago... have ordered new ones and am so psyched about how easy this will be! Replaced a broken leaf spring this spring and it wasn't as easy... THANKS!!!!
Hey, that was pretty easy. Thank you for the video. Getting the bottom bolt out on front shocks was a little difficult. Had to get a bit more leverage on there to break the bolt loose. First self-repair on my 2000 frontier project truck is done!
I've had a 1998 Frontier since 2004, purchased at 100K miles. Now at 275K miles, I've replaced its front shocks a couple of times, with different brands. With ALL, I had to use my bench grinder to grind the rubber lower bushing about 1 mm narrower, as it wouldn't fit in the lower control arm. I imagine someone prior to me used a shock with a narrower bottom and thus forced the mounting brackets inward a tad when tightening.....
Nice video. Just a note: I don't think the shock will return to the "out" position unless they are gas filled (ie KYB Gas-adjusts). Usually the OEM shocks are not gas filled. What make makes them non-functional is when the valves or seals are leaking or the oil is contaminated (but then I'm not a rocket scientist, so don't quote me) saved me a ton of money, thanks for making the video.
I have now watched two videos on changing out shocks on my 2004 Frontier. Front was easy. Rear shocks, well, I'm already two hours into a 30 minute job. Evidently the torsion bar or what ever it is called is in the way of getting the rear shocks off. Guess it means disassembling the entire cross brace system just to change the shock as well as drop the spare tire. If this was warm sunny summer, OK, but it's cold nasty and late and will take part of two days to complete. I will get the shocks on, don't know about the torsion bar, antisway bar or whatever it's called. I'll be proud of myself and so happy I never have to do it again.
My shop wanted $250 just for the front two shocks i ended up buying a new jack and shocks for about $120. Would have been easy but auto zone sold me the shocks for the desert runner frontier which wont fit the standard suspension frontier. So had to restart the job later. I will be replacing the back shocks tomorrow as it seems easier. Thanks
which shocks brand part did you buy ... ? how are the rear ones .. those look little bit light weight.. i had purchase monroe for rear.. and they were really super soft ... i'm looking for firm rear shock set .. thanks
well it is a light truck so it wont get much more firm unless you go to a different aftermarket style shock. to make it more firm you need stronger leaf springs.
I have a 98 frontier the trans won't take any forward gears unless you rev the engine for like 20 minutes But it'll take reverse as soon as you start it up After you rev it til it takes forward gears it changes perfect.. Until it sets a while and cools off I need help. Don't know what to do. Thanks
Is your fluid full? check the dipstick with the engine running and the truck in "N". check the color, should be red. smell the fluid to see if it is burned smelling. otherwise, it sounds like your tranny is toast and needs a rebuild. if you cant afford that, you may want to roll the dice in a used tranny. but at a min use a new TQ converter and clean ou all the old fluid.
I have a 1998 nissan frontier xe, can you do a demonstration video on how to replace your engine mount and transmission mount and where they are located I am a amateur mechanic and it's important for me to see the exact vehicle and the exact tools I need to use, I cannot find any videos with a 98 Nissan frontier XE engine mount replacement
@@atlred engine mounts are very easy though. lift engine slightly, take out the bolts, lift engine a little higher. remove and replace. reverse removal steps.
I agree, but sometimes when you can see someone else do it there might be that one little thing that makes the difference, I am a very amateur mechanic
When rocking my truck from side to side while parked, it squeeks like a mofo. When driving it, it has the same squeek. The squeek is in the rear. Does this sound like bad shocks? I've sprayed everything in the rear area which hasn't done anything to stop the noise. It drives smooth. When hitting a hump, it does bounce up and down longer than normal. The squeek is pissing me off lol.
Best video I’ve seen on how to do this. Thank you!

Excellent instructional. Was wondering how difficult this would be and clearly its quite easy. Thanks much. My 95 rolls and bounces around like crazy!

yes all shock I have ever touched in my life will return out. even stock.
the inner seals leak over time and cause non-functional shock/struts
no, they return to their previous length.
and here i was dreading the replacement. this is going to save me so much money

Not sure why u had to do that. Rears are the easiest.
Same exact situation with the shocks on my Frontier, the ride after replacing them was a complete 180. The job took no more than an hour.
Kyle Hubert good job
Thanks for the video. I have a 86 hardbody I'm doing the suspension on and this helped so much.
Update: this has to be the easiest suspension I've ever worked on
Dario Ortiz no problem man, thanks for watching!

Thank you it helped quite a bit .I will look at your page again .I have a 94 Nissan d21 w/ 267 k still running like new, with a/c.
Thanks For Watching!!!
Thanks gave me the confidence to give it a try
You can do it!
@@FatGuyBuilds thanks wasent bad once I got the right tools, ended up using a pipe wrench to brace the shock mad it super easy!
Great video. 1.5 hrs all shocks replaced.
Thanks For Watching!!!
I have the same truck. I need to change the schocks but I need some for heavy weight. Which do you recommend?
shocks DO NOT HOLD weight, you need to upgrade springs for heavy weight. Shocks just slow suspension travel time.
Great instructing! I really wanted to see you cut that wire though... 😬
Lol next time
Thank you for the video. helped me a lot. going to save a lot of money!! Thanks again!!!

Super Dab The leaf spring is the bow shaped flatbars that are long. You have shocks, coils, leaf springs.
cool vid. i have a '98 frontier and need to replace the shocks as well.. i wouldve been that guy to pay someone else to do it! lol
pay me then...lol
Thank you i saved 100 bucks
Awesome. Maybe think about helping me make more videos by going to my patreon. Either way. Thanks for watching!!!
i have a 2000 nissan frontier xe v6 2wd nd i was wondering if i can get some lift if i buy longer shocks
David Bravo depends on the size of the lift
So, I'm guessing you don't have to take off the control arm or nothing to get the shocks out? If that's the case, I'll go ahead and change my shocks
Nope. Just shocks

FatGuyBuilds It was. I disconnected the bottom side of the shocks and the sound stopped. Replaced the 2 rear and now it us smooth sailing.
awesome.
Do you have to take the front wheel off?
yes unless you want extra aggravation.,
How those gabriel's holding up?
