Resting on the crest of Alabama Hill providing excellent views of the greater Bellingham area is the Alabama Hill Neighborhood. The neighborhood is bordered by the Roosevelt and Silver Beach Neighborhoods on its east and west borders, and by Whatcom Falls Park on its southern border. The neighborhood contains only residential and public land uses, with the majority of the residential units being single-family. The neighborhood is home to only one main thoroughfare, Alabama Street. This arterial road runs from the western to the eastern edge of the neighborhood.
Alabama Hill saw its primary development during the 60s and 70s, leading to many contemporary styled homes being built. It’s streets often curve or lead into cul-de-sacs, setting it apart from other grid-like neighborhoods in Bellingham. The majority of homes here face the downtown core and Bellingham bay, allowing great views to many residents.
This neighborhood has a wealth of outdoor opportunities as it’s adjacent to Whatcom falls park and Bloedel Donovan Park, while also containing the largest section of the interurban railroad trail which connects lake Whatcom to the Barkley Neighborhood shopping district, and eventually ending at Memorial Park in the Sunnyland neighborhood. St. Clair Park can also be found within the neighborhood is contiguous with Whatcom falls park. The Highland Heights neighborhood park can be found just north of Alabama off of Vining.
Children in this neighborhood will either attend Roosevelt or Silver Beach Elementary, followed by Whatcom or Kulshan Middle School, and lastly Squalicum or Bellingham High School.
Alabama Hill is a laid-back suburban backdrop to the city of Bellingham. The quant parks, trails, and contemporary style of homes, all paired with a beautiful view of the city make it one of the most cherished neighborhoods in the city.
