This is so painful. Irland is not alone with such a shameful past. Thank you for your courage for bringing all this horror up to the surface.

It is indeed painful. No, ireland is certainly not alone with our shameful past, but we certainly didn't hold back on using incarceration of children, women and other vulnerable people to 'clean up our streets'. Shame is the perfect word here. Thank you very much!

Thank you very much. It takes a lot of work, but if there was ever a cause worth spending so much time and effort in, this is it.

Brilliant research. It strikes me that the authorities, national and local, took pains to give a thin veneer of legality to the incarcerations. From your previous presentations, it seems that the nuns were not always so careful, and put the girls and women wherever there was a gap in the workforce to keep the show on the road. Despicable behaviour, but we're not shocked anymore; nothing would surprise me about the nuns' villainy. @@mmoore3743

It was bad enough to send well women to these places, but to send mentally ill people there as well is criminal.

Heart breaking to think women didn't stand a chance once these places got their hold on them.

Your question of "Why" steeps quietly during the day.... the general policies of systemized containment had the awareness to be uncomfortable enough with the policy labeling to change the label of "lunatic" -- yet the policies itself went unchanged.... so many people harmed for being deemed different, difficult, defiant --- in many ways, all processes of growth of the individual striving for personal strength... an expression of conflict between personal safety and dealing with harms against personal agency --- these were real wounds inflicted to bring about quiet labor and hide from sight .... this was not the fault of any of the victims. We can hear and know --- here and now. The perpetrators were hostage takers - brutal thieves in vestments and state coats --- operating in a syndicated manner. .. "Why" ... the power of a Question. Thank you for the careful study and space to begin to understand. With respect and continuing healing...

Thank you for sticking with me throughout this series Brian. Yes indeed, Why?? I have just uploaded the final episode, the answer has never been found unfortunately. As you correctly pointed out, there were many instances where things appear to have been changed to 'look better' from the outside, but everything in reality remained hidden unfortunately. Thank you very much!

Thank you for taking the time and trouble in making this. What I do not understand is WHY THEY WERE "TRAFFICED" BETWEEN DIFFERENT LAUDERIES. Apart from the difficulties in "tracking people down" . What other consequence's of it were there. Could the religious orders have been "cooking the books" in trying to get more allowances by listing the women an girls in more that one place?

There were not. There were industrial schools for children - and prison for adults. As girls and women were the 'problem ', they didn't 'need' institutions for males.

Why was it allowed to continue? It could be any of the following: lack of education, it was easier than addressing the problem or no problems, they didn't know what to do with women and young girls, an attitude of free help for the laundries, a male centered society that didn't give a darn and cast women aside, women being viewed as lesser than, so let them out to pasture so to speak, out of sight/out of mind, it was too much trouble to address the actual problems, being lazy and not caring for their own humanity. It could be any of the above and more. It is frightening to think this still goes on around the world today. Why aren't there more of us speaking out. Was this a concerted effort to hide the sins of the state and church? Were we naive, not to have known or heard of these stories? Was the country too poor to deal with the issues being a new established state? I cannot imagine or fathom the number of women and young girls (as young as 12 years old) that paid the price for all of this! I am at a loss for words. I literally want to scream into a pillow with the rage I feel. God (not the church) bless these women and young girls and keep them in your care always. 🙏♥️ 😥😢😪

All these questions and more come to the surface when looking deep into such things. I suspect we will always only be able to speculate. I suspect it's possible all the reasons you mentioned could have been at play! Thank you again for being part of this!

Out of sight out of mind, that’s why it was allowed to go on so long. Also I guess the church made a lot of money from these girls.

The state can compel the church to retain and release the documents to them- like any offensive business that accepts public monies.

Money! It went on so long for the money. The Catholic church is one of the richest entities in the world
