I remember when I first heard this back in 1979 when I was sitting in the barber's chair. I went straight to the record shop and bought the single. The LP Discovery is an absolute masterpiece. Midnight Blue and Need Her Love are both great ballads from this album and there isn't a bad song on it.

The reason for saturday being missed out was supposed to be so he could go to see his team play. The team in question would be Birmingham City F.C as ELO hail from the second city of England as do many, many bands, such as Black Sabbath, UB40, The Beat, The Moody Blues, Dexy's Midnight Runners, The Spencer Davies Group, Judas Priest etc etc

In Britain Football (Soccer) is mostly played on Saturday afternoon. ELO were from Birmingham, a city with 4 different soccer teams. As a result, most husbands or boyfriends when to soccer games. Hence, no Saturday with the wife or girlfriend.

I'd heard their name when I (Chris) was younger because I liked Olivia Newton-John as a kid. She was cute, okay. I went to see Xanadu when it came out. The music was really great. The movie... I was a kid. I didn't care. Later, when Rock 'n' Roll Is King came out, I got to see Jeff Lynne. That was what ELO was to me for years. I didn't get to know them for real until the early 2000's, when one of my instructors brought his favourite ELO CD to Sound Reinforcement classes. Such great music that I missed out on. That's going to change.

Omitting Saturday was just for the rythme. There's a thousand theories (By everyone who didn't write the song) as to why. But that's the great thing about music, reaching into so many peoples psyche. Always a delight Haniers.

Actually, Jeff Lynne--who wrote the song--said he omitted Saturday because, "that's the day football is played." Jeff is a life-long, diehard fan of his hometown football team, the Blues (from Birmingham, England). His passion for the Blues team is also why the word, "blue", shows up in so many of his lyrics, song titles, and even an album title.

They could have made this sickly sweet - but Jeff Lynne doesn’t do that, he comes up with a bit of a masterpiece with this one. Simple story, but Jeff puts it all together superbly … his vocals are so sensitive that you believe that his mate is actually Horace Wimp.
