The only 120hz 8" tablet Samsung has ever made. About time! Now they need a less rugged version with more power and amoled and they would have their much needed Ipad Mini killer.
Thats basically the A9, other than the A9 doesnt have spen and better performance
Lenovo Legion Y700 2023 8.8 inch... look it up... 12gb ram / 256gb internal storage or 16gb ram / 512gb internal storage + MicroSD-Card slot and Dual USB-C'S...
Yeah, I guess Lenovo has a pretty powerful 8-in tablet but it's not sold in North America. You can import it giztop
its far to late to make a ipad mini killer...specially with m1 on the table...
Why would anyone need "more power" on a f***n tablet?
Just received my Tab Active5. Ordered from Amazon. Yeah, I think it maybe a tad too expensive, but I totally prefer the 8 inch form factor. And since I am totally in the Samsung ecosystem (S22 Ultra, Buds FE, Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch 4), the Active 5 is my only 8 inch S Pen capable tablet. And as retires Army, the ruggedness appeals to me.
How is it outside in sunlight. Im planning on this for my motorcycle Navigation...
There are other s pen 8 inch Galaxy tabs
NO there aren't...NOT with rugged buildout and water resistence rating, vibration and temp ratings..... @@-GLaDOS-
The only other S pen compatible 8 inch tablets I am aware are the previous Tab Active2 and Tab Active3. What are the other tablets?
Can you make phone calls like a regular mobile phone?
No mention of the fact it MAKES PHONE CALLS in the whole 11 min video review. This is mammoth for a tablet. I've been using the Active3 for a few years and this Active5 appears to be a minor upgrade - most major specs are the same EXCEPT for the 5G which is debatable re advantages over 4G for everyday use. The 5 has m,ore RAM but both take up to a 1TB SD card.
Now, IF, and it is a big IF for some people, IF you can come to terms using a heavier and larger device as your go-to device for calls, txt, email, photos & vid then you will LOVE this beast. The screen is what it's all about and looks, feel and performs much better than it has a right to based on paper specs. The 8" screen is the perfect compromise between large tablets of 12" and the miniature squinting screens of the Galaxy phones. I call mine a TabPhone (or PhoneTab if you like). Targus make an indestructible case for the Active3 and this thing will now last forever. Replaceable battery (no brainer!!) is what got my attention and the ability to make hands free PHONE CALLS on an 8" tablet is precious! I wouldn't hold ANY phone up to my ear - jury still out on the brain effect so why take the risk. I'm old school and still make phone calls (go figure eh?!) and this beast has it nailed. Great value for what it is. Screen perfect size for older eyes for email, Netflix(!), texting and X. IF the larger form factor doesn't worry you from a 'handling' viewpoint you will love this device. Don't whinge about it being unpocketable (DUH, it is a tablet!) just buy a shoulder sling, backpack or men's handbag style of thing and issue solved - you'll then appreciate you'll have somewhere to stow and carry your other stuff. Works a treat,m try it and get used to it you'll love it. Cheers from Sydney Australia.
Samsung, why would you make a ruggedized tablet that is clearly meant to be used outside... and then give it an LCD instead of an AMOLED?? Also noticed that the USB is USB 2.0 like the FE series of tablets instead of a full featured usb c port... Samsung blows my mind with this, so close to having the ultimate small tablet and then skimped on the two most important features lol.
It is meant to be cheap and durable, why ould you have oled on something that shod be used for over 4 years. The screen would burn in by then.
Also, this is meant for engineers, contractors or any other people who work outside that needs a rugged device, not a fancy one.
I would rather have LCD
@@UA-camWatcher264 That's the point man... you cant see LCDs outside... they are too dim, you really need an emissive display (ie OLED) to effectively use it outside... For that matter it should also have a matte, antireflective glass coating as well. Also that doesnt make it "fancy" it makes it industry standard...
@@Cute_Maxi You can see lcd outside. Why the heck iPhones used lcd for a long, long time? Also depends how bright the lcd gets (nits).
I just bought a couple of the Lenovo Legion Y700s for business purposes and they work perfectly. Cheaper right now at the $350 price range too.
The Lenovo Legion Y700s lacks 5G smartphone functionality and isn't equipped to endure the extreme conditions that the Active 5 can, which can be used as a big rugged smartphone too.
Just bought this for dirt road motorcycle navigation and I'm very pleased with it, needed something rugged, hopefully it'll serve me well, thanks for the review
nice!
Well?
Not gonna lie this is really cool there is like a hit of nostalgic old design and more and its like a combination of the past and the present
And the nostalgic feeling of device getting hanged too right..cuz its samsung 😂
Same SoC with a54, wish samsung could make more of these 8 inch tablets and have flagship or year old flagship specs and have a decent build quality.
Nothing wrong with A54's chipset. My S9FE run as good as i want it to be
@@mehshutup3041 agree, when the exynos 1380 was first introduced it was not that optimized getting beat by the galaxy A34 with DM1080 but now that is is optimized, Samsung Even used it on their new galaxy A35.
The soc on the a54 is midrange...
Yeah that's a pretty weak SOC for a $550 tablet!
@Toyeboy89 well you're not buying this thing just for the internal specs.
It is so nice to see proper bezels again. Not supporting video out is a shame. The 16:10 screen is nice, but still a far cry from the ideal 3:2. Throw a SD8G2 in there and I'll buy many.
Nice tab but absoluteley insane price for exynos 1380.
I agree, it feels they are overcharging for the ruggedness and the MIL specs.
Great review dude, please compare itu with Tab A9 in price to performance ratio
I remember the Samsung Note 8 from 7-8 years ago and thought I'd never see something like it again! It was a great idea and I always wondered why Samsung abandoned the product category. I would love something like this for note-taking and Android gaming. I will definitely look into this and thanks for posting links to see it. Yes, it's pricey compared to other 8-inch devices, but it comes with the S-Pen with full access to the Play Store so... 😁😁 I have the Amazon Fire 8 and continuously lament I wish I could take notes and sketch on it like on my old Samsung Note.
Galaxy Note8 is a Phone tho
@@its_tomtrn127 I think we're talking about 2 different devices. Yes, Samsung does have a Note series of phones but they also, before they were "all in" on the Note series, they had a device in this same form factor they called the Note
@@its_tomtrn127theres a note 8 tab too , it was confusing at that time
Yes, sadly there's not a lot of room for niche devices these days in the market. Well I guess there is at the highest end because of the high margins like the ultra but. .. now companies pretty much use the same chassis for everything.
@@JoshuaGdid you have an S pen in a silo? That would be pretty cool. I don't remember any tablets like that, but probably wasn't paying very close attention at the time
I have the Active 3 I use as a navigation device on my off-road motorcycle, amazing durability so far. Hopefully this one is as good.
I bought a Samsung Tab Active 3 (predecessor) last year, and I've been using it daily since then. One thing I can tell you is that the tablet is buttery smooth with a lightening response time. The tablet is built with high quality and is rugged at a reasonable price. The new model Active 5 has an even faster processor and more memory. I like the Samsung Tab Active so much that I am planning to buy several more units for my work needs.
I have the Active 3 as well. It's great, but 'buttery smooth' it is absolutely not. It lags an awful lot.
@@tams805 Perhaps, you may want to use a cleaning app to clear gunk from the system. Maybe that's what's making it sluggish. Mine is very fast, even faster than my laptop.
I have a Tab Active 2. Use it daily. It's a beast and still works great!
nice!
I think a lot of people don't know about the existence of this device because it's only sold exclusively in some markets. I once held the s-pen of this model in my hand, And if I guess correctly, that pen is just the small S Pen of the Galaxy Note series that was covered with a large plastic layer on the outside, increasing the size of the pen.
Anyone had samsung tablets with the buttons as childhood?? OMFG IM MISSING OLD ONES FR😢😢
Not cheap (€539) but with 5g and small formfactor nice when hiking or camping/city tripping. 1380 cpu as 6Gb is nice (but why no 8Gb RAM, the cpu deserves 8Gb 😢).
Didn't see this one comming.
I would've considered it for 209. But hell no. I'm content with my Tab S4 at 150 with a glass back ( I think? ) 4G capable and lots more. Headphone jack as well.
pretty solid for construction/hard work jobs
Thank you. Great review as always. Had a question, is the screen viewable in portrait with Polarised Sunglasses? Thanks.
Can't believe it's a 2024 product... Feels like the old days!
I've been using my Lenovo M9 for a year now. The Active5 is a worthy upgrade.
This is the best tablet Ive ever sin. I love watching mhm mhm with this 4K ULTRA HD ;3
Hey, Fishbee, did you know that your video is the most professional and well-produced and clear-focused production? So far, yours is the only well-produced video on the new Samsung Active 5 on UA-cam. Other guys' videos suck and look amateurish with out-of-focus images. Produce more videos on the new Active 5 tablet.
thanks, glad i could help!
Smasnug should bring back removable back covers for their flagship phones , they can still make it with glass but with a plastic or anything for the removable part on the borders and some rubber for its ingress protection just like this..
Love my active 3, basically the same with slightly less performance. Samsung haven't made it worth upgrading too, hopefully I should be good until the 6 comes out.
Removable battery + rugged + fingerprint scanner
I wish my Galaxy tab a9 has that features
Not really worth it at that high price point. There are cheaper options out there on par by just adding a robust third-party protective case. Maybe it could be justified for specific niche use-cases but for general use I can't bring myself to justify it considering the cost. Perhaps I'm just too frugal.
Like which one? Only Samsung consumer tablets have a built-in stylus while the rest are treated as just add ons. They're also huge as well. And then most jobs that this is catered for involved static images so amoleds are shot too.
And none of those alternatives, barring Tab A 2019 models, have physical buttons. Software onscreen buttons are a bitch to work with in wet or gloved conditions.
Ok you got me on hardware buttons. That is a definite plus.
Yes, there are other 8-inch tablets but none of them have the S-Pen functionality. I too wish the device was cheaper but to have the S-Pen and to be able to use this as a bonafide small form factor note-taking device / sketch pad is almost priceless. But if you're not into note-taking or sketching, then I can understand your hesitation.
For some reason, Samsung Good Lock is not available in the Galaxy Store for the Active5. Bummer. And there is no Always On Display. Double bummer!!
If they can achieve IP68 with a removable battery, they should do it on the base S series devices and leave the upper models with glass.
They did that before with galaxy s5
They will never return to plastic back in s series.
I see you’re doing good. Have a good day!
Good review. I wonder if it is possible to connect the Samsung Galaxy Watch to this tablet?
I think the tab active 3 is still a good cheaper choice. The 2 big upgrades for the tab active 5 are the 120 hz refresh rate and the 2 extra gigabytes of ram.
Its a pity the navigation buttons are not backlit... Also dual speakers would be great.. Ill look for a different brand
At least even sold in the United States? I've never seen them on a consumer focused website or retailer. Maybe there's some enterprise sales
I personally actually used a Samsung Active Pro tablet (4th gen I think). It acts as the teach pendant of a Fanuc CRX robot.
The performance sucks (it can't display the 4D display from the Fanuc app properly which is kinda a disappointment), and it heats up kinda significantly, but I guess there really aren't that many rugged tablet option available so Fanuc picked it as the stock teach pendant option.
is better than a8?
i ended up not using my a8 tablet. ipadmini 6. i use mainly for camera.
i might buy s9 cause large screen can be very useful.
they should make folding tablet that disjoints into 2 screens. alot of people on pc use 2 screens. so it in 1 product is nice. untile then i owned more than 1 tablet.
Yes better than A8
Why would get a tablet for camera?
@@Viralvids128 i bought a body camera, AND an insta go3 camera, i ended up not using either one.
for not much more money i could buy an ipad mini six. and the huge battery life is a huge plus, and the larger screen is a huge plus and it picks up good audio, and has many other features. can draw on things and so on and edit stuff on the device.
totally worth it compared to buying insta go three, or a body camera. which i wound up not using. also an ipad mini6 is more stealth than both of them because i can carry it around as normal with camera on and people won't tell it's on cause it has a case cover. but wearing a body camera or insta go 3 people will know something fishy is going on.
i primarily use it for the 2ndary camera, if i am filming myself making a phone call to someone and ask permission to film, i am on talking to them on my samsung phone while filming with the ipad mini 6. etc. this is why i needed a another camera and the ipad mini 6 is solid for the price. the other thing is this, it picks up great audio. i needed that aspect also.
A larger size would seal the deal for me. Thanks for the review.
Silly question. I use iPhone 15. But I need this for work. Can you sync the apps etc in any way? I have been working n the Apple family for a v long time! I would just be hotspotting out in the field.
I'll get this over my 3310 nokia ❤
I interested in unlocked sim version as I believe it can be used as a cell phone as well as tablet, can you confirm this?
Why Samsung doesn't sell S9 Mini?
The spec is much like "S9 Mini"
good question
Because at that point you just get the ultra.
@@mehshutup3041 what? Ppl want a powerfull small tablet and a big good tablet
Want to get a new Compact tablet was looking at a lenovo, maybe this one better considering I broke my last one :)
The price got me, 1000 bucks Australian :o
Which one to order, to use for Navigation on my motorcycle ?
It would have to be the cellular data 5G version.
Navigation doens't require cell data....@@hezekiahwallace2412
Navication does NOT require cell service...it has satellite Nav capability built in...the wifi only units will suffice.@@hezekiahwallace2412
Isn't that too big to tie a good holder to secure it?
@@xyes I have the ProClip USA Key Lock Mount..on the EvoTech frame....
The Pogo pens on the side is for a charging dock.
Surprised this tablet has Samsung Dex.❤
Could you please attempt to charge it using a charger with more than 15 watts? I'm curious to see if it will charge more quickly with a 45w charger. Thank you!
I wish you tested the No Battery Mode.
I wonder how’s the drawing experience with this. I have the tabs9 plus but I would like something smaller for travel.
From my experience of using Active 3, drawing is buttery smooth with no lag. The S Pen is a pure joy.
Numb question: can these use (simpler) 2d drawing programs? It’s the chief thing I miss.
Yes, S Note is excellent. Inkredible app is marvelous.
Looks like an old tablet with those Bezels. I don't see this selling well since Samsung has the new FE series of tablets now.
This isn't meant for average consumers. Consumer grade tablets may look pretty, but they are fragile, especially for drops. They are also expensive disposables designed to last about 3 years, since changing battery is not practical. The Tab Active tablets are beautiful 😍 🤩 👌 ❤️
I got the tab s7 fe, its better for shopping, but you need a case. Pretty suck cases this time, it must be soul crushing. The S24 Ultra 512gb has these glorious man bags, you could run naked in san francisco. The neo corporate aspect is as shooted in the nuts as the day I graduated.
Saw the price and got a good laugh...I went in thinking 199.00!
Perfect tab for reading, but I don't know how good the outdoor experience would be with the LCD screen.
Can you tell how many speakers of this tablet? And whether the speaker gets support from AKG and dolby atoms?
He said this tab just have 1 speaker placed at bottom
This is the tablet I'd have bought if they had put a better display in it. I went with the regular Tab S9 instead and just made sure to put a good case on it immediately after taking it out of the box.
Regular s9 is way better and also higher priced.
Best Design by Samsung
Its not expensive coz tht case might cost around 100$
It is repairable. And has IP68 dust/water resistance, a headphone jack and a microSD card slot. Pretty much means everything Samsung says about repairability and making removable batteries with water resistance is a lie.
if they can do an active convenience button on the tablet like this, then they should bring back the bixby button. but don't call it the bixby button, call it the galaxy key!
You can't remember the last time you seen a removal battery ? How about the model before, The Samsung active 3 .
Great video thanks!
I saw phiyscal buttons and that border and thought ... "cool! retro tech from 2010s"
does this support pen pressures?
yes
This is slick looking. I am going to look into this tablet.
Not better than ipad
Sir tell me about the best 10 inch tablet
If you still have the unit, could you provide the dimensions of the tablet inside the Protective Cover? Samsung seems unable to provide that information. I made a guess by checking the Protective Cover for my Tab Active Pro 10.1 with a digital thickness gauge. (Metric preferred, but Imperial OK) Thanks.
Available when I checked the shop app, but only when comparing to other tablets. For some reason it's in us custom units vs metric for the tab active 4. Not consistent at all.
Dimension / Weight
4.99 x 8.42 x 0.40 / 431g
@@2010ngojo Thanks -- it was like pulling teeth to get any accurate information about the tablet from Samsung or dealers.
However, mine arrived earlier than I expected so I was able to see how it fits in my travel gear. About the only thing I'm not wild about is the battery life, but I've been doing a lot of downloads and some app that use more power.
@@Gallery90 from what I understand, the battery life gets better after a week or two of use. At least that's how it is with other mobile devices.
I have a question but its about the galaxy s5e. Does the s5e support android 12
Nope
Sadly not , try to get the galaxy tab s6 lite 2024 , it has 5g and 4 years of software upgrades
@Uxz-iu8re S5e has amoled display which non of recent midrange tabs have
i used to be a tab 3 user back in the day, man that was tough 😂
O botão para retroceder funciona apenas por pressionamento ou também por toque?
This feels like a return to tradition
I thought samsung got rid of the old fashion home button 😭😭???? I'm ready for nostalgia ❤
i know, sort of crazy
love seeing the Bible app on the dock 😇.
I want to see emulators on that. Hoping that exynos chip handles old console games just fine
We need an active version of the Galaxy s ultra phone's, sadly that's not going to happen any time soon! 😢
Did Samsung update their rugged phones? The last version wasn’t very good.
i believe so but i haven't looked into yet
Why do they down grade the chip in this and in the fe
more profit for samsung i would imagine is the reason
Still not given a Snapdragon Gen 8+ version like The Lenovo Legion Y700 2023 8.8 inch SD screen...🧐🤓🥸🤯
it's so weird to see a tablet with a removable battery but it's cool too
Is it compatible with galaxy watches?
yes should be, although i haven't tested that
Wow looks like a mini iPad! 😮
I dont know why Samsung insistes on to not producing anything like iPad mini?
Woah, it’s too overpriced in my country. Or it’s everywhere idk. Is it just for that military grade? I know that's a important feature, but why though? They even use Exynos processors. I can't just believe. I can buy s series tablets like s8 or s8+ with the same money. What are special features here? I couldn’t find any.
$500.00 ?
I bought the A7 lite. 32 gb/3 ram, half full of bloatware. Crappy screen, no casting, i returned it. So far i don't know of any android tablet to compete with the ipad mini. Nokia t10, Lenovo m8 are not in the same league.
Looks like it’s designed for work, jobs like police, construction, medical etc
It’s more expensive because it’s designed to take a beating, it’s ip68 dust and water proof and is MIL-STD-810H compliant which is military grade.
“Devices earning MIL-STD-810H certification are verified to perform in extreme conditions and qualify as heat-resistant, water- and dust-resistant, and shock-resistant.”
This particular tablet reminds me of the galaxy tab e lite seven inch
1:41
The battery is small for this tablet. Samsung's phones that are half the size have the same battery size.
How long is the software updates?
4:07
Just in time. I was looking for a bigger phone.
One more question, is this pad easy to root or not allowed?
sorry not sure about that one
removable battery is nice, if only you can find the spare battery
Wait wasn't one of the rugged tablets before is based on the A8.0 (with spen) series? Are they gonna release a non rugged ver.??? 😭 PLEASE

What is up with android tablets shipping with mid -ass processor chips?
Samsung already has tab s series.
