Aaliah Leyva if you practice with heaps of art supplies you get a lot better at transferring your skills from one medium to the other ^^

She actually said that she was working the same way as with acrylics. The medium is different but the workflow stays the same, hence the result :) all comes with practice, if you master one medium, you find it easier to jump into another. You find differences, but also similarities to what you already know and they allow you to work around the uncomfortable bits.

when I use charcoal, my favorite weapon is a chamois (or shammy) to help blend and keep my fingers relatively clean. It gives a similar look to finger blending but without skin oils. Just a little tip for the future if you want to try charcoals in the future :). Also so glad to see you back, one of my favorite yt artists with one of my favorite art mediums XD

That fixative spray is a lifesaver. We used it for the first time in school and it was so worth it. It was a little hard to find back then, but that was a long time ago. My art teacher had us wear towels on our smocks belts like you see chefs sometimes have towels so we could rub our hands semi clean if we needed to do something that we needed less messy, tracky hands for. I don't know if that would help or not, but I'll toss it out there for you to do what you want with.

So glad to see your videos back in my sub page. I totally saw that advertisement placement coming... lol In college that is all we used so I like it, but I 100% agree MESSY, MESSY! I hate getting my hands dirty, but you cannot avoid it with this medium. I did find carcoal very easy to use, so that was a plus.

9:25 I would normally agree since I liked to do that too, but the finger leaves skin oils on the page that affect that particular spot and if you want to come back to draw on there again, the charcoal doesn't behave the same as in the rest of the page, which is quite annoying. So I concluded that for me it's a lot better to smudge it using a chamois cloth for large areas and blending sticks/stumps for smaller details

Out of the traditional mediums, I’ve got to say, pastels and charcoal have got to be my favorite! They are fast paced, super easy to blend, and won’t dry (because they were never wet to begin with) so I don’t have to worry about covering an area within a set amount of time! I ironically HATE working with earthen clay, because that mess bothers me and apparently dust does not.

Happy to see you're trying to give charcoal a go. Because if you can like charcoal, you can use some soft pastels as well. I have some Strathmore Charcoal paper, 300 Series. I like it because it has just enough texture to grab the charcoal or pastel, but not so much to make your finger hurt, or feel weird. Your pic came out great. Really good job. You for sure should continue with charcoal, & pastels. You're to good at it not to. Looking forward to seeing you do more. Loved this. TYFS

One of my annoyance is charcoal I only put up with them in my art classes but when alone at home I try to avoid them much as possible I keep them aside unless I really have to use charcoal

Aside from my rant I really love it your doggy drawing!!

Wonderful job. You handled the charcoal so well. I've also used leather chamois to blend larger areas (to save my fingers) as I find it was easier for me to control than the blending stumps. It's also fun to do charcoal with spot pastel color -- sometimes color in a single focused spot can be wonderfully dramatic.

I am also not a really big fan because I tend to smudge my drawings in general. Though it helps when I use a charcoal in pencil form (mine is from Faber Castell and i don't remember it breaking as often as yours^^") instead of sticks and blending with a tissue paper or an blending stump. Though my worst problem is the sound that the charcoal makes on the paper, it makes my skin crawl, it's like fingernails on a chalkboard for me >.

I'm a dog training instructor in the US and I think you made a perfect portrait... of a Swedish Vallhund!
Okay, they are a rare breed in the US but I've had several students with several Vallhunds each and wow, your portrait is exactly like my student Joanna's oldest Vallhund! They do have a slightly different head shape than Huskies and, without a size referent to give me scale, my eyes insisted that it was a Vallhund.
Just so you know how I found this video, your channel popped up in UA-cam's recommended videos for me. I watched one video and then could not resist a bingewatch. The recommend must have been based on my pattern of watching art videos since I rarely watch dog related videos.

I really like how your charcoal painting developed! It is gorgeous! I’ve used charcoal to do a couple of portraits of my own and my friend’s dogs. I’m not as artistically talented as you are 😄, but I think they came out pretty well. I did use toned paper to help with the background so I could use the charcoal for creating shadows and highlights. I’m with you about the messiness, and hate the feeing of the charcoal on my fingers. I did use that hand lotion that helps put a barrier layer on hands for easier washing up; but I still got all messy!

Hey hun! So what I learned with charcoal pencils is to never use a sharpener! You use a razor or box cutter to carefully shave the wood at an angle to expose the charcoal and then sharpen it with some sandpaper on a handle. It’s hard to explain without images, sorry 😬

I CANNOT draw charcoal portraits without my trusty tissues/toilet paper and cotton ear buds. The tissue i fold a couple times and use that to smudge --- gives a much smoother blend as it is dryer than fingers. The ear buds are for blending too but on a smaller scale. sometimes i even wrap the tissue over the head of the ear bud to get a smooth, small area blend. I hope this helps!
