Thank you! Glaciation is one of the coolest things honestly, and people don't realize how impactful it is! One day I want to go to Canada and really see it for myself, I've watched some documentaries but I doubt it holds up to seeing it in person!
Oooh that would be a very interesting thing to expand on. Your polar regions would definitely have some expansion of ice caps that would disrupt possible shipping lanes and such. Because they would mostly be at the surface, I don't THINK they would have a major effect on oceanic circulation enough to impact the climate region calculations we'll be doing. But if it's relevant for your story to know the shipping path options, it would be a cool thing to chart out. It would be a seasonal thing 🤔
I just stumbled onto your channel. Your content is very clear and practical. The mapping and paper cutout exercises are really helpful for making the connections between process and chronology. Frankly, you should connect this material to a workbook and an online or in-person course in especially a Geology, Geography or Game Design program. I could even imagine high school teachers using this material to teach physical geography (especially if you also deal with climare and biomes) modules (at least in Ontario, where Grade 9 students often have a physical geography course). Anyway, I will stop fawning. Do any of your videos deal with cave formation? I have a vague understanding of karst systems, and an even more vague understanding of lava tubes. I have no idea how or if caves form in granite and the like. However, a systematic overview of cave formation would be neat. Perhaps even discussing the structural integrity of caves and how that varies by material composition? And are caves ephemeral features in the same way lakes are (geologically speaking)? I always wonder to what degree my dungeons and caverns are remotely realistic. Anyway, something on those topics would be amazing...but I also recognize making good content takes time, etc. As it is, thanks for the videos you posted.
Thank you so much! I am definitely a hobbyist but if the cards line up, I would love to make a workbook one day! I'm not sure if I'll truly ever have the time, but that would be a lot of fun! I've honestly never looked into cave formations specifically, but one of the next videos I plan on doing is on mineralogy so if I can find an opportunity to squeeze that into the implications of different rocks etc in different places I will definitely do so! I could see it being a really cool topic to dig into when I get to regional maps though!
Around 4:50 when you're talking about the "east" side of land masses, does northern or southern hemisphere change that? Might it be reversed south of the equator?
I believe it is still the East side! This is due to wind patterns mainly and the wind belts will still blow in the same direction regardless of hemisphere.
Do you have suggestions for how to do this in physical 3d? I've been watching your videos and Artifexian's videos and while I like Gplates for surface area and distance measurements, I hate using the program. But it has kind of really prevented me from accepting a 2d projection as acceptable.
Oh you can definitely put this in a 3D projection, I put all of mine in one to create good projections for different local maps. I do some Photoshop shenanigans to create a basic rectangular project and then I put it into gprojector to get a globe. I've been thinking of making a video on it here soon.
