    Bolens must have changed the design in 61. On my 61 all I had to do was drive out the old bushings and press in new ones. Good work. Can't wait to see it in action. Dave

      Thank you very much for the information, we did not know that. After reading your post we carefully checked the axle and our spare axle and they did not have any form of bushing. We then checked the parts manuals for the 60, 61 and 62 and we could clearly see the bushings on the 61 and 62 but not on the 60. We are very keen now to investigate the bushings on the 61 and 62 to see what size they are and compare them with the bushings we inserted. Thanks again and take care

    • @AG4QH1
      @AG4QH1 7 місяців тому

      Sounds good. The bushings will be 1inch O.D. and 7/8 I.D. Just like the bushings you put in after you drilled it out. Hope this helps. Dave

    Very nice job! Ready for another 60 years of service! You will be happy to know that the 62s you have are equipped with bushings for the spindles. I was able to purchase bushings to fit. For the axel bushing I had 2 made by a vendor on Ebay. They fit perfectly! Cheers to another great video!

    the tilt back angle of the king pin is known as the caster angle and it ensures the wheels stay in the straight ahead position when moving forward on a level surface, and returns the steering wheel to straight ahead after you have turned a corner! Cracking job on fitting the bushings Joseph, not an easy set up on the mill, and a very good idea to bore test holes before you started because as a general rule, twist drills produce slightly oversize holes!
    A very enjoyable watch!

    Nice job on solving the issue with the axle in the mill. The bushings should alleviate any issues with uneven wearing in the future. It will be much easier to replace the bushings than to remill the axle again.

    With axles, you have to have caster and camber for proper tracking and so that the tires want to naturally point straight ahead. 2* to 3* would seem to correct. I thought that the axles were cast steel. Good job. Good Luck, Rick

    great job figuring out how to bore out the spindle housings,, I know way back when vehicles had straight axles, we had to put new bushing in and it was a given that the bushings had to be reamed after they were instilled, I guess by pressing them in, they probably were shrunk by the housings.

    • @GardenTractorBoy
      @GardenTractorBoy  7 місяців тому

      I think you are right. We tested the bushings before pushing them into the axle and they were a good fit but a bit too tight now. Take care

    Hello Joseph,
    Nicely done and thanks for the mention... I was thinking that in these sort of setups it may be worth considering not using the vice but clamping the item directly to the table and using studs, finger clamps & packing to hold it down. I noticed the big vee blocks which could also be use. The problem with a vice on irregular shapes is that it will always try and align everything with the jaws. Great work, see you on the next one.
    Take care.
    Paul,,

    Too bad about the 1" drill bit not producing a 1" hole. I was wondering if an adjustable reamer would have enlarged that hole to fit the bushing. Sometime, in a pinch, you can make a bushing "fit" by marking the outside with centre punch marks that expand the material slightly around each punch, enough to produce a tight fit on an otherwise loose-fitting assembly. It wouldn't pass the machinist exam😦 but can get you through on less critical fits. Very fortunate that your dad has all that shop equipment, milling machine and lathe. You are getting excellent instruction.

    • @GardenTractorBoy
