On one hand the internet's done a lot of damage but on the other it's exposed me to interesting things I never would have been exposed to without it I hope we'll figure out the way to minimize negative aspects of the internet and maximize the good

Most of your daily actions are guided by your emotions and for a good reason, you dont need to make a concious choice to drink a glass of water in the morning, it just feels right and you just do it. The more of your actions are guided by your emotions on your daily life the less your own will is needed and thus becomes weaker. Exercise free will constantly, in any minor things, like grabbing a book, drawing a picture, going for a walk or calling your loved ones even if there isnt any need for it. The more choices in your life you make out of your own will the easier it gets to stop yourself from procrastinating, masturbating, drinking alcohol and smoking, which is why in psychology demanding patients to do things that they should be doing but not feel like doing goes such a long way to help them get rid of addictions. Self control can be archieved but it has to be exercised constantly like any muscle. Cant really expect someone who doesnt exercise to run nonstop for hours or lift really heavy weights, their body is weaker because their lifestyle isnt physically demanding and thus dont exercise their muscles, similarly cant really expect someone who doesnt exercise their free will to have any control over their actions, if their life doesnt require a free will and they mostly go about their day on auto-pilot.

I always use the Christmas break as a detox period though. Go to my dad's out in the sticks, where the mobile coverage is just good enough to sync my phone's flashcards and not much else. Spend about a week there and come back with a more balanced brain for a few months before I start to slip again.

I installed plugins this year that block recommend videos and certain keywords, and my productivity for school shot up by probably a factor of 3. The problem with quitting outright is the internet is a necessity as a student and programmer. Curating media, instead of abstaining from it, is a effective alternate lifestyle choice.
I agree, but I instead downloaded the videos and website I knew I needed and would need (such as Calc1-4 videos on UA-cam or cppreferrence) I found I could use my offline resources without issues, but it did take time to figure out certain problems since I couldn’t just look it up. I only used internet at campus.
please recommend some of the plugins that you used back in the day. I am in a similar position as yourself, being an IT student struggling to navigate through this distraction epidemic on the internet.

I think the few landline phones that are still in production are really bottom barrel quality. I have a pile of broken ones, gave up and switched to using a rotary phone. Completely electromechanical, no electronics.
I had a fuckup happen like that too. Friend got drunk and smashed the landline. I'll tell you one thing...You.do.NOT.want to manually tap out the numbers with wires. It's a pain in the ass, but works when all you have is a busted speaker.
My strategy for doing something that I don't want to do is to find something that I want to do even less. Then it becomes the second worst thing and it gets done as part of the eternal procrastination process.
Well that's normal. When I have a bunch of tasks to do planned for the day I don't have time to look on my computer or phone. But I recognize how much time I've wasted on most other days. This is a good reminder to include more of these days in my life. :)

my internet went down for a week so I spent all that time just sleeping, listening to the 10 songs i've saved on my laptop and drawing. It was the most isolating feeling i've ever felt. And I also decided to walk around town which I haven't done in 5 years so it was pretty weired.

I think my modem can kill some websites with the parental firewall, but I won't be able to allow only youtube-dl or mails with that...

In the last holidays, I did a bit programming on a system with internet but no sound, and I made an important step for creating a programming language.

Back in 08 I found myself in a situation where I didn't have internet for like half a year or so. Didn't even have a computer for most of that period. And it wasn't really a big deal. I wasn't trembling from withdrawal nor did I become mega productive. I just watched TV, spent time with my gf and friends. Basically like pre internet times for me (except the gf). After that I've never seen leaving the internet as some groundbreaking achievement or the internet as some sort of addiction. It's way overblown.
