It is an essential plugin and should be built into OBS, in my opinion. The biggest thing is if you have apps playing to dedicated to audio devices, you would need to keep OBS open all the time to route the audio when you aren't streaming. That's the only thing that you'd still need Voicemeeter for. I'm thinking about what changes I want to make considering I have this functionality now.

Though I find this plugin highly interesting, it will ~NOT~ kill Voicemeeter (VM in short). And there is a simple reason why. Still, everything would go through OBS. One might ask: Why is this a problem? Because while streaming, the delay of the Monitoring Output can rise continuously rise. I had issues before, when I tried to monitor the sound from OBS, the delay did rise while streaming until I reached a horrible delay of almost half a minute (!!) But lets say you don't run into those issues. Even then, this introduces quite a bit of delay to the sound. If on the other hand you use VM on an audio interface with a good ASIO connection, the delay added can be pretty much unnoticeable.
More possible issues with using OBS:
    1) You have only 4 Channels for Recording devices to be used globally. The first two global audio devices are playback devices, which MAYBE work, but depending on your use case, you might end up limiting yourself. You can of course add more channels to each scene, but you don't want to do that per scene. Its a mess to keep track of. I for myself currently use 8 (!) audio Channels within VM Potato. (Yep, all of them!)
    2) You get a more controllable monitoring output, but you don't get additional outputs, like you would with VM. In VM, you can have to 8 outputs at a time. While that might sound overkill at first, get this: I am currently using 5 Outputs . Two of them go to OBS, one with a Streaming mix, another one with a Recording Mix. Next, I have one output for Voice Chat. Usually, that one only transfers my microphone sound, but then again, I can mute said output, without muting. And trust me, you want this mute function at the same place as you have the muting for the stream or monitoring your microphone! And on top of those 3 Outputs, I have 2 separate Monitoring Outputs.
    3) You need to keep OBS running pretty much all the time, so you can hear the channels available in there. But since you do not stream 24:7, this can be annoying to say the least, especially if you run a single PC streaming setup. Maybe you want to play games of stream, your PC cannot stream at the same time, because its not powerful enough.
    4) Using a DAW Controller to get hardware controls over your multichannel set up. Try to add a DAW Controller to OBS. Just try it. It's a pain. 2 Plugins are needed just to do that and even if it works, I wonder if it works with the Audio Monitor Plugin without issues. No matter, if it does: You end up with a mess of plugins and each of them needs to be occasionally updated, to keep working with the newest Version of OBS Studio. VM on the other hand keeps getting updated and doesn't meddle with OBS Studio at all. And pretty much any DAW Controller can be connected to VM and configured to your personal needs. Granted, setting up a DAW Controller - though straight forward enough - is a lot of work, but it would be the same no matter where you want to set it up (not counting professional DAW Software, where it MIGHT be easier.)
All of that being said, I will definitely stick with Voicemeeter Potato.

I personally don't think VoiceMeeter will become irrelevant after this, I use it a lot outside of OBS and the way patching works is way more familiar to me as an audio engineer. Still cool to see must-have features being developed as plugins, if I didn't use VoiceMeeter for other things then I'd hate to have to install it for OBS.

Outside of streaming, the main thing I use VB-Cable for is routing audio to Teams/Zoom/WebEx meetings. I set the advanced audio properties of OBS to monitor my microphone and set the monitor device to VB-Cable Input. In the meetings apps I set the mic to VB-Cable output. Why do all of this? For the audio filters (gate, compressor, expander mostly).

Ooooh, this is neat, even if just for the utility of per-source monitoring devices or previewing each local recording track.
Like voicemeeter I think this will be great for people who truly have those niche applications that Voicemeeter demands, but like you said, most people don't need VM. It frustrates me that nine times out of ten I see people asking 'how can I isolate my game audio' and replies just immediately jump to voicemeeter when that's just adding more complications and points of potential failure when all you really need is the singular, free VB Cable (if that, like how you use your screen to more or less have a virtual cable built in to your setup, or RTX Voice / Nvidia broadcast can act the same way).

  • @Ganerrr

Great video, but definitely not a VoiceMeeter killer. I may install this for some of the audio controls to be moved into OBS. For starters, it doesn't support network audio... which is a key reason I use VM. I pipe my audio from my Stream PC over to my Game PC and vice-versa... 1 mic for stream and in game comms, I can pull game comms out and hear them w/o stream hearing them, etc... VM is way more refined and has features this doesn't touch on. That said, if I was on a single machine, and didn't want to learn the extras in VM, it looks pretty good. Thanks for reviewing it!!

This might replace VM for me even for non-stream purposes! I use VM a lot to separate the audio channels on my XLR ADC, apply separate volumes and filters, and then feed one back to me, and rejoin both into the output.
It allows me to use my phone as a soundboard in games, by plugging the 3.5 from it into the secondary microphone port on my ADC, while also setting a noise gate and filter on my actual microphone. It works great in VR as well, as I can use Teamviewer on my phone to stream it to PC, and have it in my hand to actually use and hear, and I can turn whether other people hear it (usually in social VR platforms) on and off.
Being able to use OBS'es filters for this purpose could greatly expand what I can do with this type of audio routing/rerouting setup.

I was super excited after seeing this because I've been using Voicemeeter for awhile now to do a lot of things, and it's limited/ convoluted. I got the plug-in to work for a lot of things with little fuss. However, having audio drivers run on Windows, OBS, Voicemeeter, and GoXLR caused my Realtech audio drivers to somehow get damaged. I reinstalled them, which changed somethings, but for now the signals from my physical line in and mic in cables are getting mixed. In my sound control panel I see both mic in and line in as "ready" inputs, but only one of them has monitoring bars. When I rebooted, the monitoring bar switched from the line-in to the mic-in. I've tried a few things so far to get everything working again, but not having changed my hardware, I can't use Voicemeeter to accomplish what I was previously accomplishing after installing this plug-in and messing with it. If I figure out why that happened, and how to work around it, I'll write back. Might anyone have any ideas on how that happened and how to fix it?

OBS is amazing for assembling scenes and sending them over to Zoom through Virtual Cam but Desktop audio doenst follow. To get audio from OBS to Zoom, I / we have to set Virtual Cable as monitoring device in OBS and then set Virtual Cable as Input (mic) in Zoom. That works except now when I'm playing desktop audio in OBS, my zoom attendees can hear it but I cant.... and for months, I and many others have not found a work around for this. Could this plug in be the fix? Maybe like this. Send the the audio to zoom through VB Cable and set up a new monitoring device - Interface so I can hear the audio that's playing. Along with this, since Discord already supports OBS, they should just make it an audio out already, even without the plugin. I don't see why they haven't.

If Voicemeeter had volume control hotkeys that didn't involve a certain level of coding to understand, and if the OBS plug-in "win-capture-audio" by bozbez didn't already exist, AND if Voicemeeter didn't have unique issues related to the requirement of being on all the time in order for any of your audio to work, Voicemeeter would have a chance for me.
On top of all that, there's a separate piece of software (not a plug-in) that's easy to use, called VolumeControl. You can set hotkeys to adjust volume for specific apps, including internet browsers.
So correct me if I'm wrong, but with the apparent lack of hotkeys to "step" up & down the audio with the plug-in being showcased in this video, Audio Monitor and Voicemeeter both seem like a lost cause compared to the absolute power combo of VolumeControl & win-capture-audio. Check 'em out here:

I completely reinstalled everything and still get the same problem. With nothing else added, just a fresh wipe of OBS, and the audio monitor plugin. As soon as I add the audio monitor filter to something all the sound from everything suddenly becomes robotic, tinny, and LOUD, and even when I pause the sound it becomes 'frozen' on one tone. Removing the filter immediately fixes the problem. I haven't got any other audio things installed on my computer like virtual cables that might be messing with it.

For the moment the only reason I use VoiceMeeter is to BOOST the Audio of my Monitor Speakers... Whatever inbuilt software controls their sound is terrible, and they simply aren't loud enough, so I use VoiceMeeter to BOOST the Volume of my monitor speakers to where I don't need "external" speakers, the monitor speakers work well enough.

  • @DarkSwordsman

I think it's a good concept, but the two main issues are:
    1) Apparently latency, as others have mentioned. I recently noticed latency in Voicemeeter (especially MME devices) and it's horrible when you're playing games like CSGO or Tarkov where latency can ruin the experience.
    2) If you have multiple programs (game, discord, and maybe music from a separate music service, like the licensed monstercat player in browser), then you can't split their audio.
The best would be to have zero latency audio copies. I haven't actually worked with audio cables (only the voicemeeter program), so I don't know if they can do this, but to be able to send audio to a cable, and then split that cable however many times you want. This way, you can send discord, game, and music to three separate devices, and then mix them in OBS. Otherwise, with this method, I would have to mute my music, game, and discord all at once if I, say, needed to say something private to someone on discord.

    • @dashofawesome64
      @dashofawesome64 3 роки тому

MME has alot of layering from windows itself creating alot of latency. If you use the WDM its already a lot less. If that still isnt enough you could lower it in the driver or voicemeeter.

Can you show how to get Discord on a different track than my other desktop sounds?

    • @WereCatStudio
      @WereCatStudio 3 роки тому +1

      Discord input: My mic
      Discord output: VB-Audio CABLE Input
OBS 1st Audio device: VB-Audio CABLE Input - (for Discord)
OBS 2nd Audio device: Realterk Digital Output - (for PC audio)
      OBS input: My mic
Then in the OBS Audio Mixer I've set my SMSL M6 (headphones) output as a listening device for both audio devices via the plugin in the Filters menu.
In windows the Realtek must be set as a default audio device in this particular configuration otherwise the game will use whatever else is the default. (Realtek because that's what I set in OBS as a PC/Game audio).
Only disadvantage to this thus far is that I have to either have OBS turned on to hear sounds from the PC or I need to manually change the audio device in Windows to my SMSL M6 if I don't want to have OBS opened.
If you don't have your motherboards audio free and you are not using a different sound card then this will not work for you unless you get the paid version of the VB-Cable to get one extra VB-Audio CABLE Input.
I don't know if this is a great solution, maybe there is a lot better way to do it. It works for me though.

A plugin I've always wanted was the ability to have recording and streaming to be completely split from each other. Control which sources are recorded vs streamed, and control the settings each one gets recorded at. (30 fps stream vs 60fps recording for example). Currently the only alternative is just to have 2 OBS windows open.

    • @davidskidmore3442
      @davidskidmore3442 3 роки тому

The FPS thing is already possible; in your recording options you have to uncheck the 'use stream encoder' box, and then set whatever options you want for recording (this uses more resources, obviously, as you are encoding each frame twice). Same for audio, you can stream 'channel 1' and record 'channel 2' and use the advanced properties on the audio mixer to select what audio goes where. if you need to have different levels, I believe you can add the same audio input as two audio sources in the scene, once for stream (set to use only channel 1) and a second time for recording (only channel 2).

I think that Windows should handle all of this on an OS level.
In the volume mixer you should just be able to tell each program to send its audio to a specific output and as many outputs as you like.
Audio has remained unchanged since Windows 7 except for obfuscation of key features. We need some innovation.

@eposvox I am sorry but I have been watching this video over and over again alongside so many others, went through the official forum for this plugin trying to figure out how to set this up for my particular use case which I thought should be pretty basic and straight forward at first, but for some reason is just so incredibly confusing and frustrating since I ain't getting anywhere after many hours... What's even more frustrating is to see that most people seems to understand it and finds it quite simple to use and achieves their goal with it.
What I am trying to do is:
    - Monitor and properly separate the output of the system's sound (my game for instance), Discord, my mic and maybe the output coming from Spotify or a web browser on their own tracks for recording purposes
    - While streaming I want to be able to adjust these sources/devices output volume on the fly for both me and the stream, hence I downloaded this plugin for that reason
    - I've tried to follow what you were saying through out the video (I understand this is a quick overview and isn't meant to be used as a tutorial), but I absolutely don't know where to start and how to set everything up correctly (not just for the plugin, but in general)
    - The system's sound would go straight to my headphones, then I would adjust the volume for the stream through audio monitor's filters
    - Discord would go to one of my monitors through the Nvidia sound driver (or so I think according to your explanations), then I would adjust the volume for the stream through audio monitor
    - The same goes for my mic
Here's what I was able to do so far:
    - I managed to install the plugin no problem and to dock it just like you did in OBS
    - In the Windows sound control panel, my headphones are my default playback device and my mic is my default recording device
    - I setup the output device in Discord to the monitor (again, I don't know if that's what I need to do here... I'm just guessing at that point)
    - Then I created a new scene to test it out and add those 3 to the sources for the audio mixer (headphones, mic and then my monitor (Discord))
    - I added an audio monitor filter to my monitor (Discord) pointing to... that's where this is really starting to confuse me. I've tried to output the filter to my headphones thinking this would be it, but this seems all wrong (keep on reading to find out why)
    - On Audio Monitor's docked window, I ticked the options "Output Slider", "Only Active" (I don't know if I need anything else to show up in there, as this was quite unclear to me)
    - On Discord, I jumped into a conversation with some friends, trying to adjust the sliders, but apparently the slider on the left which is supposed to be what I hear (again, according to what you said) moves alright so it does pickup sound coming out of Discord, but I just can't hear it since its set to my monitor. The filter serves the purpose of letting me hear the audio through my headphones, but at that point that does the exact opposite of what you said in this video... This is what I hear with the slider on the right set to my headphones (hence the audio monitor filter)
And so I am uncertain of what is destined to be sent to the stream and what is meant to be for my ears. I don't know how to set this up, I don't know how I should setup Windows audio playback/recording devices (If I made a mistake there, then I don't know for sure), if I need to set my audio devices through OBS's settings as well or just ignore those, that ain't clear to me either. I see the faders for Audio Monitor on one side and the faders for Audio Mixer on the other and they seem to do the same thing so I don't know what Is supposed to be done on each one of them and how to get started. The options on the filter may be useful, but then again I don't know what their purpose is and if I need to tick any of them or not.
There is just so much that isn't explained (by that I don't necessarily target you) and that people just assume that you will understand on your own, but that just isn't being realistic if you ask me. At that point, I feel as if some audio degree is needed in order to understand how everything is routed to one another to make it work in perfect harmony (Windows sound control panel, Discord, OBS, this plugin, sound alerts, any other software outputting audio, etc.). If documentation is not provided to the end-user or at least some basic explanation on how to set it up, then one mustn't EXPECT that people will figure things out on their own with trial and error since not everybody as the same amount of patience nor knowledge to do so. This is going to end up just as worst in my opinion then with the alternative Voicemeeter which I've tried before. You can guess the outcome of it if I ended up trying this solution instead which is supposed to be... simpler according to most people? At first Voicemeeter seems like a pretty software, inviting even and seems relatively easy to setup, but quickly ends up being such a pain and non-user friendly that the only things I managed to get out of it in the end was to waste my time, uninstall it to free up space from this crap and then forget about it to move on to the next thing... which turns out to be another headache so far.
Could you or someone please help me out with this? I feel like I've wasted way too much time on something that should be so much more simple than that.
    Thank you!
