  • Richard Diebenkorn’s triumphant ‘Ocean Park #12’ makes its auction debut as a highlight of the 20th Century Evening Sale in New York.
‘Ocean Park #12’ is among the earliest existing works from the artist’s widely celebrated ‘Ocean Park’ series. This pivotal masterpiece from 1968 represents the artist’s lifelong interest in the work of Henri Matisse and a near abandonment of the vestiges of figuration.
Included in the seminal 2016 exhibition ‘Matisse/Diebenkorn’ organised by the Baltimore Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, ‘Ocean Park #12’ unites two of the great masters of 20th-century abstraction in a painting of supreme majesty and beauty.

Sorry, bu' I believe Diebenkorn's "The Berkeley Years" are the most influential and inspirational works Diebenkorn ever created. I agree the works of Ocean Park are great, but he was looking for something to put on canvas after his most creative years of artwork. The Ocean Park series is wonderful, no doubt, but this was a period he wasn't as inspired as his earlier work,, almost as if he's forcing himself to keep up the work ethic he had created for himself. I almost see it happening with him.
