It's hard for people who don't play football to get how hard these dribbles are.Most football players struggle to even go past one defender.The fact that some of these players are toying with 3-4+ defenders is crazy for me as a guy who plays football at an amateur level.

The really hard thing that usually goes unnoticed, are the small delicate touches at high speed. That is the most difficult thing to defend, skill moves like stepovers, elasticos, rabonas... You can see them in done in street any court around the world. But that delicate control of the ball is differential, and goes easily unnoticed by people because a simple contact with the ball, is not a flashy leg movement, but what we have to focus on is how the ball is behaving.
@@MD-ez8fg everyone can do step overs rabonas etc but timing is everything. Most players do these skills and stay in my same place don’t get anywhere, the select few players that do them well have the timing on point to the point where the defender can do nothing about it

Traditionally numbers were reserved for certain roles. In general: number 1 is for the goalkeeper, numbers 2 to 5 are for defenders, 6 to 8 for midfielders and 9 to 11 for forwards. But, it depends on the formation the team plays as we see number 7 for example mostly used for forwards (wingers). As time went on, players got to choose their own number which I think is a cool thing. Still, you'll see this tradition held high.

10 used to be for the most technical advanced player on the team, they mostly play behind the strikers, feeding them balls and scoring themselves.
The original number 10 was Pelé, he used to play as a central attacking midfield or central foward

The number ten is traditionally associated with the role of attacking midfielder or forward. He is typically the team's most technically skilled player and best playmaker. Best analogy: he is the quarterback of an old school wishbone option offense, or a point guard who is true penetration threat as well as a passer and outside shooter.
The number nine is reserved for or associated with the striker position. Strikers are a team's best and most reliable scoring threats. A traditional striker is able to move well in congested space and put himself in a position to receive passes and crossed balls where he is in the best place to score. Best analogy: he is the star running back combined with a deep threat side receiver.
A classic defensive number is 4. A four is sometimes called "the destroyer". He is meant to own the defensive middle of the pitch/field, mark the opposing center forward, and distribute the ball to his midfielders and wingers in order to create his own team's opportunity to attack.
As another poster mentioned, the position number is more often than not different to the player's shirt number. But, the roles themselves are still defined by number. You will hear people talk about a player being "a classic number nine", a "false nine" (meaning that he may start well forward, then drift back to more of a playmaker role), or a "true number ten".

You really should look at the defensive side of the game.
It truly shows you what this sport is all about.
For an attacking player making mistakes isn't that big of a deal but for a defensive player a mistake can cost you a goal, game or even a championship.
It goes either ways, if an attacking player misses a goalscoring opportunity it can cost his team a game/trophy/championship

number 10 is the equivelant to 23 in basketball generally the point guard of the team responsible for creating plays, assisting and scoring. must be a complete player who is well rounded. its the reason you see 10s being the sauciest, they are usually the most technical.
Number 2/3: Defensive player on the wings. Defends but also contributes offensively, with crosses to box interplaying with his partner in the wing.
Number 4/5: Defender. A wall, usually strong and resilient.
Number 6/8: Heart/engine/organization of the team. Playmakers. Some playing from deep, others venture more forward.
Number 7/11/17: Dribbler, usually in lightning quick and a demon in the wings. Would occasionally score, Ronaldo made it a trend to score almost always from the wings.
Number 9: Lethal. Scorer. Can be skilled.
Number 10: Magical, responsible for creating chances for himself and team. Number ten meant brain of the team.
Number 10 is usually the playmaker, number 9 is the striker, numbers 7 and 11 are usually the wingers, number 6 is the defense midfielder and number 8 is the usually the box to box midfielder, number 4 is usually the central defender. The players don't choose their numbers, only the most important players have the number they want

#10 has been worn by many legendary players, it is an honour to wear but also bears big responsibility. That position is basically forward midfielder, just behind the strikers (can vary depending on the tactical system). A player wearing #10 is usually complete. Passing game, dribbling, shooting and good perception of everyone's position (both teammates and opponents). They are usually creative players, able to "carry" the game when things get rough. #10 is often the captain as well (being the best/most talented or experienced player on the team)
A Portuguese player at West Ham saw he wasn't given his number 10 shirt for a match. He left the changing room before the game and went home. Paulo Futre possibly?
A good footballer to look at is Ricardo Quaresma Portuguese like CR7 could have been just as big as him if it wasn't for his attitude but he has done some amazing things with the ball he most known for the robona and outside of the boot shots curling them like people do with the inside of their boot
Basically numbers are reversed for certain roles.. sure you can pick your own number but many players like to stick with the traditional numbers.. Number 1 is for the goalkeeper, Number 2-5 is for defenders but the centre backs usually pick number 4, midfielders usually pick 6-8 but there are some players who choose 17 like Kevin De Bruyne or someone who chooses number 10 like Luka Modric, Number 9-11 is for the forwards.. it also depends what formation each team plays.. one of the most well known formation is 4-3-3 (goalkeepers aren’t counted in a formation) which means there are 4 defenders (2 centre back, 2 full backs) 3 midfielders (usually one of them is a defensive midfielder) and 3 forwards (2 of them being a winger and 1 striker) wingers/ inside forwards tend to use 7 and 11 like Ronaldo for number 7 or Neymar for number 11 and their role is to cut inside play with defenders and score or assist, or make a run on the flanks and cross it in to the striker.. stikers who are number 9 are usually only focus on scoring as much goals as possible like Lewandowski or Ibrahimovic.. and then there are the number 10s.. they are usually the most technical players on the field.. they usually play as a centre forward in a 433 false 9 formation or as an attacking midfielder.. the best players to wear number 10 are Messi and Maradona.. if you watch them play you’ll notice that they play much deeper than a traditional stiker and the wingers become the inside or inverted forward hence the name of the formation false 9.. they usually assist the most and/or score the most goals like Messi.. the midfielders who choose number 6 or 8 usually control the whole game with their passing and vision like Iniesta, Pirlo and Xavi.. so every number has its role but the player can choose whatever number he/she likes which aren’t taken
I will add the 6 is habitually used for the defensive midfielders and the 8 is like a mixture of a 6 and a 10

One thing about football that Americans seem to miss: When you're playing basketball or american football "dribbling" past someone is easy compared to football. You are doing footwork while holding a ball or dribbling a ball with ur hands, while with football you have to adjust every little move you do with your feet because not only do you have to get past someone, you also have to bring the ball with you and close to your feet at all times.

Point is....numbers dont matter anymore, they used to in the past but now any player who is gifted makes any number their own, it all changed about 20 years ago. also different numbers can mean different things for different clubs, depends on who wore which number,
Numbers in footbal are arbitrary, but if the numbers are distributed in the order the players ocuppy in the field, 10 ends up being the player behind the forwards, who's usually a centre field whose responsibility is to build plays for his team. This requires players that have a good perspective of the game, and who usually have very strong technique. Also, as good players with the number 10 get more well known, the more players who come after them want to have the same number, so the number 10 kind of became a thing for those players. Then you have number 7 which is even more arbitrary because often it's worn by players that can play on both sides (like Ronaldo), but it's also a number that at some point gained traction and players started aspiring to wear it.
A good example is Cristiano Ronaldo, when he first started playing at senior level at SCP (Sporting Club de Portugal), number 7 was taken (by Marius Niculae) and he used to wear 17 as an alternative, but as soon as he had the change, he grabed the number 7, and you can be sure that it was part of his conditions to sign for a club that he was allowed the number 7, so much so that he made it his brand.

normally, the gol keeper is the number one, and the player's number goes up according to his function in team, generally the highest numbers are for the attackers, or midfielders (11,10,9...), and the defenders and full-backs have the lowest numbers (2 ,3, 4...).But there are some exceptions. there are players who play with numbers different from their functions, for personal reasons sometimes, because he likes the number or tradition. Sometimes there are also teams where a player does so much for the team with a certain number, that after his retirement the team retires that number, and no player can play with him anymore.
