I'm not a physicist, but I can suggest why Ronan was so obsessed with the new lightspeed drive based on my extensive background in reading hard SF during the mid- to late- 20th century. Many of the concepts in the Marvel universe are consistent with popular novels of that era.
There were several proposed types of FTL, but the three main ones are:
    1. Point-to-point transit, sometimes using large space structures. We see this in Babylon 5 (90s TV series) for a jump gate system or the original Star Wars (1977) for a system that does it with the ship's engines.
    2. Travelling through a different dimension that has different space-time rules or which doesn't synch with our universe 1:1. Common in horror-sf.
    3. Treating FTL as the same as slower than light travel, just faster. Ignoring the energy issues, you'd need some pretty spectacular instrumentation to adjust for the fact that you are travelling faster than you can see. The system might have a smooth acceleration & deceleration or might be instantaneous.
The main tech among galactic civilizations in the Marvel universe seems to be a variation of type 1. We see the same hex-shaped holes in space used by the Kree here in Guardians of the Galaxy by the Milano (Starlord's ship) and by the Sovereign in GotG2. We also know that Xandar and the Kree are relatively similar in power since they signed a peace deal after a thousand year war (GotG).
An FTL system like this requires a database of coordinates about other star systems. Since both Ronan and Danvers came out in high Earth orbit we can assume this database is probably of inhabited planets, not stars. I don't even want to think about the complexities of calculating planetary motion across half the galaxy, but obviously they've solved this problem.
There are two main disadvantages to this kind of FTL tech, especially for a militaristic empire like the Kree. First, if ships are always showing up in the same orbit, it's relatively easy to defend against an attack: just build a weapons platform near the warp in point and blast anything that shows up unannounced. Even a low-tech world could ruin an attacker's day with a bunch of nuclear missiles.
Other than totally obliterating the planet there wouldn't be much the Kree could do and there's no sane reason to destroy a planet. There are a tonne of material resources in space; the only reasons to conquer a planet are if you want a workforce or to use their infrastructure. You can also add their cultural variety to yours, but the Kree obviously aren't interested in change.
The other problem is that as we saw in GotG2, the system isn't point A to point Z. It's point A to B, B to C, and so on, with fractions of a second jumping between real-space and FTL. This was the point of Yondu's comment to Rocket about mammalian species not doing well with more than 50 jumps strung together. They're clearly using a system of interconnected systems where you have to go through more and more systems the further you want to travel. While it's probably a self-correcting system like the internet (ie, defending one system means the jumps take another route), it's still a horrible technology for any kind of wartime strategy.
What Lawson developed and everyone was trying to get their hands on in Captain Marvel is type 3. Accelerate to light-speed, cross the threshold, and keep accelerating. Go anywhere you want, as fast as you want. You might use a jump point database for navigation, but you're not dependent on it.
For the Kree, this would be a huge leap forwards. Not only would they gain a massive tactical advantage against any world they want to attack, but they'd no longer be on par technologically with their rivals like Xandar. They would instantly go from an empire in decline to the most powerful force in the galaxy other than Celestials and possibly Thanos.
Sorry for the dissertation. tl;dr: the type of FTL Lawson developed would have completely changed the power dynamics of the galaxy for whichever culture managed to secure it. Ronan would use that to build a galaxy-spanning empire, regardless of the consequences. Xandar would probably use it to create a Starfleet like civilization. Danvers uses it to be a superhero everywhere in the galaxy.

The Kree didn't want other species to get the ability for light-speed travel, especially a new type they don't fully understand, which would make it harder for them to track/suppress it. Mar-Vell was developing it to give to the Skrulls so they could escape Kree oppression/genocide.

Oh I see! So it was more of a dominance ploy than a desire to possess the technology for themselves. I see, thanks!

@@AviationAustin Sure. Not official canon on this, but it's how I understood it. Also, because she was using the Tesseract, an object of power that's also one of the Stones Thanos was pursuing, possessing it would've been an enormous boon to the Kree.

so the jump thingy isnt perfect like you cant just go anywhere you like you can only jump through pre-existing interplanatary highways and then there's the jump sickness thing from gotg 2 where you cant jump too much too often also FTL engines can be activated from anywhere unlike the jump system where you need to get to a breach thing which can be mildly disadvantageous as seen in gotg2 when they escape from the gold people after having stolen some batteries

We do have missile defense systems that would be able to engage ballistic missiles such as the Patriot Missile system in service since the 80s. Maybe they wouldn't be able to intercept all the weapons but certainly some.
