There are more than 2,000 Military Working Dogs in the US Military, and most of them are from Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd breeds. They are primarily purchased from Europe and brought to the US as puppies, but about 13% are bred in a special whelping facility in Lackland AFB in Texas which happens to be the only home to the MWD training program since 1958.
MWDs are non-commissioned officers, and are traditionally one rank higher than their handlers. This was meant to prevent handlers from abusing their dogs, but on the ground, the love and bond between them is respectful and strong.
MWDs are capable of many tasks, from patrolling and chasing down bad guys to detecting narcotics and explosives.
While it costs about 60 grands to train a dog, it can cost north of 150 thousand dollars to prepare an explosives detection dog. If this seems like a lot, consider that we have spent billions of dollars on explosives detection technologies, and yet these dogs do a much better job.

They are. Deployed with a dog handler who trained Belgians at the base kennels. They really build those boys up to sniff up IEDs. The handler told me he had a code word for him if they had to clear a house this word would trigger him to go and kill. He did a couple of other pumps I heard and eventually caught an infection from a wound and had to retire. Glad he didn't have to die out there cause he sure as shit got down if saw anything that looked like an enemy. He ended up pouncing on a local civilian there because he looked like the enemy to him. Dude was fine but my point is I've seen our good boy go through episodes just like us humans do with PTSD so that rank is legit.
Most importantly they smell explosives which their handlers are incapable of. "Get out of the way, I got this"
Yes they are. I was a dog handler in the Marine Corps in Afghanistan. I was a corporal, my dog was a sergeant.

Yep, 26 yrs military and I saw them all the time! The MWD school is about 30 - 40 mins away. They have a foster program where you care for them until ready to start training. The base Vet takes care of any care they need. ❤❤❤

Fun fact there are every year about a dozen dog who fail their training due to being to friendly who become available for adoption.
Currently have a malinois purchased him for $375 he knows his own bite command he’s very active gets messed with every day and he even climbs the tree to get the ball we have hanging for him never payed any money for training we taught him ourselves malinois are very smart and pick up easy on commands just remember to take it easy on them to much stress can make them panic

They are living weapons why wouldn't they be? They have built in advanced commands. Most dogs don't compare to service dogs.

Most are mixed. I saw breeds of all types when deployed and on active duty

I just don't know which branch to go to and the marines dog handler job looks too hard.
If you want probably the best quality of life in the military go to the Air Force, I'm Air Force security forces and if you decide to go to the Air Force and want to be a k9 handler join security forces and later on in your career if you work really hard you will be able to be one but its a very competitive field

$150k is NOTHING!! They save our soldiers lives. They save innocents lives. I don’t care if they cost $500k or more. They deserve the best medical care. When they retire that medical should follow them until their last breath. Do not deny any of these miracles what they have earned. Not our two legged or 4 legged soldiers. As far as I know, no. Only trained dog handlers have dogs in the military

I can’t keep a straight face when they’re wearing masks🤣🤣🤣 seriously tho I’m currently training my pup German Shepherd to be like them dogs. The only difference is I suck at it compared to them soldiers but me and the dog have fun.
There should be other types of dog breed should be trained in the military, like golden retriever, boxer dog, Labrador etc

These dogs are breed all at Lackland AFB.\Not a single dog is bought from Europe do not fall for this channels bullshit. The US military has 1,000 MWDs in training at any one time.
That dog would catch me immediately the one at the start you see how far he jumped. I would be gone. Whoever jumped on my back take it out my neck I’ll be bleeding out on the ground.
