    How to repair punch/kick accidental holes in hollow doors using expanding foam to repair hollow pressed doors
    Use a scraper to tidy any splintered wood veneer from the damaged area, sandpaper flat any bulging edges to the repair and remove any loose internal debris.
    fill the hole with the expanding foam ensuring the foam gets underneath the jagged edges, allow the foam to set and then remove the excess foam flush to the existing flat surface of the door, apply a coat of filler and allow it to to dry before sanding smooth.
    tenants had damaged expensive swedish doors, the cost to replace them would have been too expensive! so my solution was to repair them for a fraction of the cost

    I am a carpenter and hanging doors is kinda my specialty . In 'this ' situation patching like demonstrated is a fantastic solution . All these comments about cheaper to get a new door is just ridiculous . Good luck trying to get one that matches a door that was made maybe 20years ago , so then you got to paint anyway. Thats only the first hurdle , a whole world of pain exists after that if you dont know what you are doing . Then after all that you have to dump the old door. Brilliant solution right here !! Thank you sir .

    Good idea about the foam as a filler but, given time and the expense of the repair, I would look into buying one of those doors as they are really cheap. Especially if all the other doors are unpainted. Having one door painted would make it stick out like a sore thumb. None the less, I do like the foam idea.

    Take it from a landlord with experience... Use solid wood interior doors, and this problem never arises. If that's too cost prohibitive, then only put solid wooden doors on interior doors that lock (such as bathroom doors)... This is because, damage such as this most often occurs on these doors as it is usually one tenant locking themselves in to escape from another enraged tenant during a domestic argument, with the latter hammering the door in rage/frustration.

    Wow people keep talking about just buy a new door. You have to go get it and the mortise the hinges and fit the door. Then you have to bore a hole for the lockset and latch. Mortise in the latch. Most people can't do this very efficiently and it would take them all day. This fix is easy. Foam takes 2 min
    Cut foam and spackle 5 min
    Spackle next day 2 min
    Sand 2 min
    11 minutes labor vs all day for your average homeowner. Even a carpenter is going to have 2 hrs labor and another hour going to get the door.

    • @Instone09ine
      @Instone09ine  5 років тому +3

      Hi, you need to widen the crack so the edges do not touch, do this so that the foam can get underneath and create some structural strength when the foam sets.
      ideally the filler needs to be in contact with the dried foam below to make a neat and strong repair. 😊

    The hardest part is matching the stain color wich i imposible. So you will end up and resand, repaint the whole entire the door instead of just filling up the hole plus 3 days: 1 day to wait fir the foam to dry, 1 day for the filler to dry, 1 day of sand a crap out of it and paint. This might take 2 days . So 4 days to fix that door. Labor and material....... tjis is only worth it if the door has a paint coat instead of stain like in this clip

      $50? Damn where are you buying your supplies? It seems like this repair should run like 20-30

      Lowes or HD, new hollow core door is $35 or $38 if you want the mortises cut.

      I don't see more than $10 worth of materials there, and the time is trivial if you are an owner or maintenance guy, and are there regularly anyway. Now what's the labor for installing a $20 door; you don't really expect the hardware and hinges to be in the same place, do you? You'll be lucky if the new one goes in without trimming or shimming the edges.

      Too right! I hate installing new doors in existing frames. I would much prefer taking 4-5 minutes a day for two days like this guy did. Spraying some foam and doing a little sanding is way more appealing than trying to fit a new door.

    Please tell me where you are getting these doors for $20, people commenting? I can't find a hollow door for under $80 that matches the other doors in my house.

    Would bondo make a better filler? More durable than plaster based patch?

      I had the same question. I think it would be less likely to crack and firm up the skin of the door.

    To be perfectly frank, a loaf of bread thrown across the room can break a hollow door like this. I know. I did it. Threw a loaf of bread to my kid who missed the catch and the bloody loaf caused a hole like this one, but smaller in a closet's door. I hate living in crap quality rentals, that charge high rent.

    Would this method work even if the hole is huge and goes through to the other side of the door (see through)? Thanks!

    • @Instone09ine
      @Instone09ine  7 років тому +7

      Sounds like a big hitter there ! yes it should be fine, you might have to foam fill from both sides but the method should work.
      good luck.
