    How to hookup a trailer in Ten Easy steps:
    Step 1: Test the tow vehicle's wiring.
    Step 2: Verify the trailer ball & hitch meet the min. gross vehicle weight rating. Also check that the ball and hitch size match.
    Step 3: Back up to trailer
    Step 4: Lower the tongue jack, secure the tongue latch, and insert the safety keeper.
    Step 5: Lift up on the trailer using the tongue jack to make sure there is a secure connection between the trailer and the hitch.
    Step 6: Raise and secure the tongue jack for towing.
    Step 7: Hook up safety chains making sure to cross them as you do
    Step 8: Connect the lights. Run the light cord through the safety keeper.
    Step 9: Step back and verify that the trailer is level or slightly up hill.
    Step 10: Check all the running lights, left and right signal, and brake lights.
    Step 11: Drive safely.

    Tighten those chains up, you want them as short as possible without them interfering with the ride, ideally You want to be able unhitch the trailer and it not touch the ground, by the chains holding it in the air

    • @canadiantimberwolf1
      @canadiantimberwolf1 5 років тому +3

      As long as the chains are off the ground, they are fine. Tightening means the trailer loses the ability to turn without being dragged. Nice job...

    • @Colonel_C-man
      @Colonel_C-man 5 років тому +2

      Stephen D James I said tighten up without interfering with the ride. You don't need them THAT loose. The way to check that is tighten chains, then turn your trailer so you're almost jack knived, then hook chains up and test to see if they're going to interfere. I don't tow real heavy equipment, but there's no downside to having shorter chains that don't interfere with anything. Longer chains make for easier cargo loss on trailer when/if hitch malfunctions arise.

    • @ElectronicsForFun
      @ElectronicsForFun 2 роки тому +3

      @@canadiantimberwolf1 no that's not true, those chains are supposed to keep the trailer from hitting the ground if it comes unhooked. If they're too loose then the hitch will slam right on the ground if it becomes unhooked. You don't want those chains hanging too low because they won't do shit if they're too loose.

    If you are looking at the coupler hitch part, not the ball, how do you tell which size ball goes into that? What I mean is, if you go look at a used trailer you've never seen before, you see that big coupler piece that connects and rests on the ball, and I realized that its a whole different game to look at that and try to figure out which size ball goes with it. This looks harder to tell which size goes in it than just looking at the ball. How do people do that?

    Any tips on how to avoid catching the backside of the latch assembly? I think this is a more common problem that I can't seem to find tips at how to avoid. When this happens it can look like the latch is on. It doesn't sit up much higher than normal but the latch clips easier than normal above the ball and if you do the check by raising the trailer it comes off the hitch. I killed my wife's transmission by not performing that check and having that issue.

      @@canadiantimberwolf1 NHTSA guidelines require that you take up as much slack in the chains as possible, by twisting them. In the event of a decoupling, the chains will actually catch the tongue of the trailer before it hits the ground, in a properly installed, and applied system. Twisting a chain does not weaken it. "kinking" it as you say, means there's a REALLY excessive amount of length that needs to be taken up. In this case, you need to get the proper length chains installed.

And the H.T.A or Highways Traffic Act here in Ontario say, NO they can not be twisted, and MUST be fitted to proper length. You can however, use a bungee cord to hold the chains off the road. I also read that a mild twist is okay as long as the Links DO NOT overlap. Disconnecting of the trailer and car or pick up with chains overly twisted causes kinks and they can snap under that kind of strain with bad results...

If there is something wrong you can isolate the problem. If you get to step ten and something doesn't work, then you know the problem is the trailer. To many people have had one or more lights out on a trailer and bought bulbs, light assemblys or new wires. Or this is a rental trailer, complain to the store that their rental is crap when it was the tow vehicles fault all along.
