- Chile's match against Italy at the 1962 World Cup is widely considered the most violent soccer match of all time. The match went on to be appropriately named: The Battle of Santiago.
Violence in sports is often premeditated. Prior disputes and spats can lead to increased tensions, and the sporting event itself offers a legal way for opposition to take out their anger against each other. The events leading up to The Battle of Santiago created a perfect storm of hatred between Chile and Italy.
In 1956, Chile won the rights to host the 1962 World Cup. Carlos Dittborn was the main driver behind Chile's World Cup candidacy. In 1960, Chile was hit with a massive 9.5 magnitude earthquake leaving a sizable part of their infrastructure in disrepair. Chile was in jeopardy of not being able to host the World Cup, but Dittborn was stubborn. Over the next 2 years he architected a plan to rebuild, and rebuild they did. Dittborn died just before the World Cup began, but his work was not in vain. Chile hosted the World Cup, and Dittborn became a hero for his efforts.
Rebuilding after a 9.5 magnitude earthquake is hard, and Chile wasn't in perfect condition when the World Cup began in 1962. Two Italian journalists (Antonio Ghirelli and Corrado Pizzinelli) wrote disparaging articles about Chile's capital city, Santiago. The Chilean people didn't take kindly to what was said, and a rift formed between the two countries. When they played each other on June 2nd, 1962, chaos ensued.
