UNBOXING A GUITAR I WILL TAKE TO MY GRAVE
Unfortunate. I left it in the box for 24 hours and everything 🙃
Massive thanks to Ridge for bringing you today's video! Streamline your life: ridge.com/agufish and use code AGUFISH for 10% off and free worldwide shipping!
I´m sure that you´re the only one letting an aged guitar sit for 24 hours to prevent finish checking lmao
How is the LPC compared to your Maybach ?
I may be being fooled by the camera, but the damage to the fret doesn't look too deep. I think it could be made playable with a little sanding down and fret dressing rather than replacing the fret entirely which could well end up damaging the binding which would need fret dressing after the replacement anyway.
Hmm. So that's why we wait 24 hours. I didn't even wait 24, probably like 1 hour. Because there was no warning. Well my guitar is still good hehe
It's from shipping, sweetwater should have put a barrier between the strings and board.
Bound for the hang 3 you sick bastard! I need it!
Yup, that's shipping damage caused by the string getting pressed into the fret from a hard drop. That's why it is always a good idea to put paper or cardstock between the strings and frets when shipping. It is pretty rare, but does happen. Gibson USA actually used to ship guitars with plastic "fret protectors" in the late Henry J Era but they were quickly discontinued (cheaper to fix the few that get damaged than prevent it?)
Ahh the old usa plastic fingerboard plastic cover
Well I learned something new today
Also love your channel
of course trogly would know
Ohhh I remember those. “Only a Gibson is Good Enough”
lmao you say that with such confidence...you DO NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. If it was from a drop it would affect the entire fret, NOT just below the G/B string. The wound strings would make a greater impact on the fret, and you'd see that. This is just shitty QC. Stop spreading nonsense, you're a UA-camr not a luthier and certainly don't understand physics if you think this was caused by a drop...
"With authentic dented frets". That D'Angelico looks great!
smooth frets are about the only thing i really care about in a playing experience, its where most of my modding/guitar tech work is spent,...that exact fret dent issue is my biggest fear with shipped guitars, and ive even missed a few buying guitars IRL,...if its a proper dent that is a full level and re-crown :(. *plenty of brands, even budget companies will insert a cardboard guard or waxpaper enveloping the strings,...once you get obsessed with smooth frets, there ain't no turning back tho, i wish I'd never known
That's a tone dent meant for making microtonal music.
You might appreciate this, H.
When opening boxes, if you open both ends, it cancels out the negative suction normally caused by the space between the guitar case and the box.
This also helps stop potential mishaps.
I really like the knobs in the D’Angelico. For whatever reason that might be my favorite part.
Did they murder winni the pooh for that Gibson guitar case lol
Lololooooool 😅🌊🌊🌊
You’re more patient than me, I waited two hours when my new custom showed up a few weeks ago 😂
Congratulations on that beautiful new Axe !!!
oh wow im early on this one
also: the thing about waiting a while to take your guitar out of the box is absolutely true, *i've* never done it because im an impatient little shit but if i were buying really expensive guitars i definitely would wait, some people suggest waiting 2 weeks before taking a new shipped guitar out of its case, probably overkill but hey who knows
Well it surprised me on the second box because that 24 hours thing generally refers to nitro-finished guitars. The D'Angelico is an import and there are barely any Indonesian/Korean factories that do nitro, so I was wondering if they were starting to do that for the baritone. The finish feels like poly gloss to me, though.
@@agufish ive heard of necks going wonky after shipping, id assume a baritone would be more susceptible to that
Fret nibs avoid having to spend to much time on the fret ends to make sure they don't catch, does feel nice, but it a shortcut on to reduce labor time
Congrats on your new LP!!! Not into aging ever, but happy for you!!! Love your channel!
Damn, that baritone looks sick, can't wait for the demo.
Sweetwater, thank you for working with this man!
Yay Gritty! Go Flyers!
I have nothing to say 🍋😄
I've never really got on board with faux aging of guitars, but that's cool, we can't all like the same stuff. I do love Les Paul's and singlecuts in general so it's always awesome to see these unboxing.
I didn't think I liked it at first either. The idea of having a nicely worn/broken in guitar that's brand new sounds nice though now. And that Murphy Lab custom looks bad ass!
Call me crazy but i don’t care either way. I’m gonna dent the guitar. Ive never got a relic. However i feel like denting one of them hurts less than the first time you dent a nice american Fender or Gibson
Same here, they just age especially when you dont play with them
A lot of the finish aging debate is misconception anyways. Modern guitar poly finishes just won't age the way the old Nitro did. Just play what you like and you'll always be happy
That dent in the fret had to have happened in shipping. It probably took a hard fall
I once screwed up my frets. I was trying to hammer some high frets down but hadn't moved string out of the way enough. Bam huge dent in the fret. Laziness of wanting to keep strings on resulted in hours of fret filing then leveling then redressing to get the dents out. Too lazy to replace the damaged frets lol. So did more work releveling. FML.
Haven't seen that for a really long time. My teacher, Johnny, had an original '68 Custom that had been played full time for what was then 12 years.
A slight bit less body checking in the lacquer, a bit more gold worn off the stop, bridge and covers off his black beauty. The thing was really how it played and sounded.
The feeling was really more akin to a top-tier grand piano, the notes were so clear and jewel like through a 70's Marshall 1/2 stack. Johnny is a purist, very much plays with his fingers and volume knob, real swells and squeaks, and would play multiple parts sounding like piano and keyboards switching to a screaming Allman brothers solo. He started playing flamenco in Cuba with his dad at age three, played twin lead ala Allman Bro's with a strat in his early teens. Then got the Custom to play Buddy Holly and fifties classics.
John wrote and arranged a crazy amount of material through that pristine instrament. One of his 1980's bands originally wrote and preformed what became Tommy Two-Tone's
'Jenny 8675309', released two months after the two bands shared a gig in SCal. They kept the Chords, melody, arrangement, the drums and keyboard fills, only changing the lyrics.
That guitar remains the nicest Gibson I've seen or played. Something that absolutely was worth the cost to a real artist.
Just found you man,,I subbed to you.. I watch a lot of Guitar videos,, Welcome to my Daily Watch . I love it that your on the carpet, Like how Trogly Started, ,Nice!! Oh and Congratulations on your New Child
Both of those guitars look sickkkk! Love getting new gear and trying it out! Love watching unboxings and sharing the feeling of experiencing new gear!
I like that you left a guitar the comes from the factory with finish checking in its shipping to box for 24h to prevent finish checking.
How do we enter to win the D’ang
I'd love to own a baritone. Congratulations on your new guitar. Love the content keep it up and you'll definitely have me as a fan always.
So happy for you. And... You're welcome;)
That D'Angelico is so extra, I love it! Same as with Duesenberg, I just really dig this 'art deco' kind of approach, all the little details and stuff. Looks soo good!
Knowing my luck with this kind of stuff, I won't come anywhere near this one, but still I'm excited to see how _chomky_ this elegant thing can sound...
that sucks! And congrats. don't fret
Bro congrats on the new guitars these are so sick
Gotta let the guitars marinate overnight
I like to let them stew in their own juice 😄
what a beauty dude.. id love to win that
When you said they "dropped them off", you weren't kidding, going by the state of the first box.
Have you ever checked out the Reverend Descent W baritone? I've gone through a few baritones including the Squire Jazzmaster, the Gretsch and two PRS and the Reverend is by far my favorite.
The D'Angelico (not De-Angelico) guitar looks incredible!
both very cool axes.
Yeah, there really is something about a black LP custom :) I still want a 54' re-issue black beauty with the p90 and staple p90 in the neck
Stoked for the baritone too. Hope it chugs all classy and art deco like :D
I love that the d'angelico made sure to put a block inlay on the first fret. I don't know about anyone else but if I see a guitar that had block inlays and the inlays start on the third fret It's definitely like points off as far as looks go. Lol problem with a gibson no never 🤣😂.Can't wait to hear the demo.
I worked at the shop that made the D'Angelico master built arctop reissue acoustics. It was such a involved guitar to make worked on a lot of the tops and backs had to get them to the exact thickness.
We had an original one made by D'Angelico in the shop for a few weeks so they could get a feel for it and make like an exact copy.
Funny enough my flame maple cutting board I made are the cutoff scraps of the necks lol
Pretty funny they give you that 24h warning when the transition from cold to warm causes... Finish checking.
Dude, that D’Angelico looks awesome!!
That D'Angelico is really beautiful. 1920's feel for sure, you called it!
The pickguard matches the hardware so well.
That LP is amazing! The D'angelico is fantastic! I own 3 of their guitars and absolutely LOVE them all!
Congrats on the new guitar!
Dude sorry to hear about the custom! Looks sick and you can probably just file that fret!
Congrats on the custom, I also just got a LP custom with the VOS treatment but in pelham blue. Arrived with broken headstock....😮💨
Your issue happened cause they didnt protect the frets like the way Gibson used to with the plastic fret guard
Man that baritone looks amazing! So fricken classy!
The Diangelico is amazing. I want 😭
That D' Angelico is one of the most beautiful electrics I've ever seen. My favorite is the GB model. George Benson. They're just Beautiful guitars. Joni Mitchell used one in her 1979 tour with Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius and was fortunate enough to see them in 79 down at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin🎸
Great guitar!!
You gonna play some Jazz on the D'Angelico? 😜
I find those stickers to be much more of a suggestion than a rule 😅
It is true about the wood and paint. If a wood is in a dry environment then a humid environment, it absorbs the moisture in the air and expands, maybe not enough to notice size wise, but enough for the fragile finish to crack or worse the wood itself
Gibson Rules,RidgeWallet Sux and AguFish Rocks, All 100% Factual.
Whilst I've had fret sprout and high frets on multiple guitars over the last 40 ' odd years, I've never had one with a dented fret like that, strictly speaking I haven't played guitar much in the past 12 years, but I still have 10 guitars and buy and sell them every so often. It isn't important where the dent came from, if it is like that when you open the package, it is not your fault!
Hey Hunter, heard what you said on discord, hope everything turns out ok for you. take as much time as you need.
we'll be here with open arms.
What happened?!? 😨
Now I am worried
@@jonathananthony1901 he's just going through some life stuff and will have to probably take a bit of a break.
It’s just a safety measure to avoid checking although the chances of it is rare, as someone who doesn’t mind checking I would open it immediately
I subscribed. I love baritone guitars and art deco. I need it!
I saw and played one of these D'Angelicos at our local Guitar Center today. it played nice, but I could not get over the headstock on a solid body.
Nice murphy labs guitar, congrats many envy you lol. Imagine waiting 24h to wait to open a murphy labs guitar just to make sure no finish checking occurs, lol good one
Maybe you should giveaway that Ridge Wallet too 👍
Likely happened in shipping. Reason why some companies put a guard between the strings and the neck
How do we enter for the giveaway? Great reel. Thanks!
the fret problem is a Sweetwater classic. they have all kinds of issues with the 55 point inspection. they've become a super Walmart for guitar stores.
I bought a Fender Professional Tele from them and I was impressed that guitar made it past inspection. It had a lot of problems. So I sent it back of course.
@@jaylee8542 I live within 5 miles of the place. the showroom has all the classic guitar abuse from people that don't really know better. countless issues with this place
@@hangingdeadguy1 I believe it. They've done a great job of marketing. And they get a ton of help from youtuber's. I think the only thing that sets them apart is the ability to see the guitar you are buying before you buy it. Take that away and it would be hard to convince me how they are any different than guitar center, etc. They all get the same crappy gear that the manufacturers are putting out to them. The bad thing is that I informed them of the problems that tele had and they put it right back up for sale after I returned it. There is no reason to assume they addressed any of them.
I thought about eventually doing a v guitar kit and I was wondering how does Gibson do relicing on guitars
I'm not the biggest fan of tune-o-matic bridges, but DAMN that baritone guitar just looks classy AF
Cool!
I actually played a D'Angelico for the first time a few days ago. It was pretty nice, would play again.
Funnily enough I bought an epiphone prophecy sg earlier this year (and have returned it by now lol) and it had a dent/tool mark in the exact same fret also under the G string...
(also I bought this in a guitar shop, not online)
I was shopping for a D'Angelico the other day, didn't buy but I love the esthetic.
I cant wait for my gibson custom m2m, waiting for temps to rise before ordering so the sparkle finish doesn't crack
24 hours for u a fraction of a second for us this is acceptable
Fifteen years ago if you would have told me people were paying huge money for late 60s/1970s Les Pauls I'd have thought you were crazy. A comparison of restoring classic Geo Metros and Ford Escorts.
I got a ridge wallet, thanks Hunter for the 10% off. I love it. I also love the gibson, shame even the crem de la crem the c let’s them down
NEXT BOX!
That dented fret was authentic. However, the fretboard inlays NOT being aged?
*rolls eyes at Gibson
I want that D'Angelico!!
To bad about that dented fret you should do a video on how sweet water handles that issue show us end result 🎶
Awesome
Take those warnings seriously if you live in drastically different climates. I live in a very cold, dry state and I bought a Gibson es339 in Nov. I unboxed it immediately and hung it on the wall after playing - the next morning there was a massive finish check right down the center of the body that Gibson refused warranty on because it's natural damage. Be warned.
Also just a reminder that you can literally pick up authentic vintage '68 reissues on reverb with real age and wear for 2/3 the cost of a brand new Murphy lab... 🤔 🤔 🤔
Give me your honest opinion....My current guitar line up is a Gibson LP Custom M2M 1959, Gibson LP Standard 60s, Gibson SG Standard, PRS McCarty 594 (core), and a PRS S2 McCarty 594. Do you think I would be able to actually appreciate a Harley Benton Guitar? I got to admit curiosity is getting to me.
I had no idea D’Angelico made such awesome single cut sweetness
Man i though i was crazy cuz i did notice on my ML 68 the 14 inch curve of the neck at some point i though it was a fake Man lol. Btw all i got is bad luck with the Carrier Man all my guitars come in broken and my ML 68 came with a Chuck of wood inside the volume Chamber. And u can hear it moving around so i open the plástic plate and it was there just moving around. And last note. I want to ask u. The pickups on this ML 68 are more passive compare to my 2020 slash AFD u have any knoledge on that matter thanks. And rock on
Just get a $5k one .. save the cash. Wear it in yourself .. no brainer !
Well you're gunna have to blast some opulent Imperial Triumphant riffs on that sumptuous D'Angelico
Could be worse. I finally got my dream guitar last year, a white 70s explorer. After a couple week back order, Took it out of the box and it wouldn’t roll into the neck pick up. A couple weeks at guitar center then a couple more at Gibson and finally got it back more than a month after I took it to the shop. Totally worth it in the end but sucked having to wait over a month to have it 100%
nice guitars
I would love that guitar 🎸
I'd imagine in shipping, something likely hit the string against the fret
tell Austin I said hi lol
Will do, mystery rando.
@@agufish we're college friends and he knew I'm an obsessive guitar player but never mentioned y'all were siblings. I had no idea till you came up in his NYU graduation pics on my fb feed and I was like "why tf is Agufish in these pics" lmao
Oh no way! Crazy small world, love it
go to your luthier and ask him to level and crown your frets and the dent will be gone
Also George with the wallet 😂
I gave my new Jackson about an hour in the box 🤣 I think from what I know the only time it'll have a serious issue is with a nitro finishes, I don't know for sure though I've never owned a guitar with a nitro finish
Suhr ships with a plastic fretguard, and they use SS frets! C'mon Gibson, it's like a dollar extra.
You could age the knobs & the truss rod cover yourself.
It’s such an expensive guitar I almost feel bad doing it… but I probably will anyways (and end up devaluing it by 2 thousand dollars because it’s no longer “stock” lol)
that D'Angelico guitar actually does look pretty sick 🤔
No short playing demo of the D’Angelico? Guess I’ll have to wait
Yeah actually sometimes the drastic temperature changes can cause unpredictable behavior of the materials the guitar is made of. These changes can be small or big, it depends on many factors like how homogenous the wood actually is, moisture in the air, all sorts of crap can have an effect. So there is some truth to it. It’s not as easy to predict with woods as it is with other materials with lower thermal expansion coefficients. So better to be safe 👍🏽
Who did the SS frets on your other LP's? Looks like nice work. I recently had a Strat done, and the guy chipped wood on the fretboard. Must have rushed it. Frickin' pissed.
Haha I got one like that... Wendell's Music in Marietta, GA. I have a video that's titled something like "I bought the WORST vintage Les Paul in the world". Absolutely destroyed Les Paul, fingerboard chipped to hell. Vlogged the process of Wendell bringing it back to life, he even filled in the fingerboard!
@@agufish That crushed my spirit. It was my favorite Strat. Stayed in tune with max trem abuse. I wound up selling it cheap and took a beating. Had to try to erase it from my memory. Thanks for the info On Wendell's. I've done a bit of research on frets, and the fret ends say a lot about the quality of the job. I'm assuming Wendell's did a good job there too.
Use curry to age the plastics that dent is part of the aging my 70s guild has trenches in the frets
Agufish, can we use a titanium ridge as a slide to play some blues riffs? 🤔
cool bro 👍I got my first Gibson in August of 2021 and love it,I decided to go with a cherry burst standard I should've of got one sooner but the quality was not good now the new owners are making guitars again so ROCK ON BRO
