- Joseph Kahn’s Power Rangers was taken off streaming platforms Vimeo and UA-cam soon after its release. Any guesses as to why that happened? Well, as the title of this video suggests, it was way too dark, violent, and cynical for a Power Rangers short. I mean, it literally illustrated unfiltered content like the Black Ranger sleeping with many women and using illegal narcotics, only to spill the brains of some bad guys later. Soon after being pulled off the internet, Power Rangers fans’ and the entire internet community erupted in expressing their disapproval, some even screamed their guts out! The outcry was so strong that it could even be called a micro revolution of sorts! Even Saban had to back down and allow the film back online. But Kahn didn’t make the short film to piss people off or to get producers to offer him a fortune for a full-length feature film. His sole intent was to put forth his own version of Power Rangers. In fact, in an interview, he mentioned that as a short, Power Rangers could be portrayed as dark and gritty, but as a full-length film, it should remain within the boundaries of socially accepted norms. Without further ado, let’s deep dive into this beautiful yet controversial short by Joseph Kahn, produced by Adi Shankar.

Fan Film you mean? Personally this wasn't even a Fan Film. Yes, PR fan films pre P/R were joke and/or troll attempts ( Dominic Sivilli's MMPR, my Lost Galaxy 2014 project, etc.) or never almost made it (March of the Dragon).
I'd rather visit the Unworthy, Shattered Past stuff if I have the time than rewatch Shankar's ultraviolent not fan film of this IP. I was 22.5 in 2015 when this came out. Hated it and boy was I jealous and insecure this Fan Film had more attention than my Fan Film project of Power Rangers.

I remember the short from a few years ago and it was absolutely incredible and totally what people wanted to see. I think that part of the reason the live action movie made shortly after tanked was because it felt vanilla and childish compared to this vision. Remember that all of us who grew up with power rangers are now adults. We know the world can be dark. the kahn version mirrored what all those 90s kids discovered as they grew up. That the world is a harsh place and it can corrupt even the best of us. This version is what the movie should have been.
I agree, hopefully they'll do better next time if there is one, remember that show virtual Samaria squad or something?
It also looked amateurish in comparison to the short, even though it was a big budget studio movie.
The major release movie was made with no idea of who the target audience was.

This live action short was awesome. Really was dark and gritty in a really good way. I really wish Power Rangers got a dark and gritty series. Just meant for the ones of us that used to watch this as kids. Really let the series grow up with us
that's kind of a terrible idea since people who grew up with Power Rangers are a niche market compared to keeping the series for kids and allowing those kids to become fans as well.

Dark and gritty does not equate to good writing. For all you know the characters are even more 2 dimensional than that of Neo Saban's terrible character development.
I would love an R-rated version of Power Rangers that would kick ass but Hollywood would never allow it ! the last power rangers film we had was pretty dark we saw blood and death but they cancelled it for some reason i guess people couldnt handle it

It was cancelled because of poor marketing and having the movie go against Disney's live action remake of one of their beloved animated movies that came out two years before PR with said remake starring Hermione Granger herself as Belle. Not only that, said Ranger movie by contrast didn't have any action until the final 20 minutes of it's 2 hour/4 minute runtime. 2017 PR was all character study, no action till the end. Even the trailers for it showed this was going be more of a Breakfast Club remake with Power Rangers and it just didn't fucking work.

@@Igivegdparent Heck, Tobey Maguire's first Spider Man from 2002. That was an origin story. It was 50 minutes well spent telling Spidey's origin under 2 hours. Batman Begins was an origin reboot exploring more on how Bruce Wayne truly became Batman, something the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher film series lacked in full because those movies were more about the villains. Even Richard Donner's first Superman from 1978. It took an hour to tell the tale of how Kal-El came to Earth after his home planet Krypton blew up and crashed into the farms of Smallville as a child, learning about his powers, then the death of his Earth Father Johnathan, discovering the green kryptonite shard, comes to Metropolis for a job at the Daily Planet, etc.
I've been sending this 14-minute clip to all my friends heavily advocating the possibility of this turning into a real movie way before the Remake came out this is what Power Rangers ultimately should be as an adult

And that movie even ripped off the short's intro shamelessly! Only to turn into a schizophrenic remake of The Breakfast Club. And Rita is still a goofball! Though, she now acts more like the White Witch had an affair with the Green Goblin, rather than the Wicked Witch of the Far East. Still total cheese.
I can honestly say that everyone that grew up in the 90s watching power rangers as a kid..and are now in their 30s would approve and applaud a r rated gritty version of power rangers!!

Dark and violent Power Rangers show? Saw this. It was fun. Not to mention that Tokusatsu can get dark and scary even at times. See stuff like GARO for instance. Even some Kamen Riders like Shin, Zo and J were dark and had some uncanny valley-tier monster designs.
Edit: Not to mention all these four things I listed also had violence. And don't get me started on some of the Ultraman shows going into a darker path. Some being even for adult audiences. Thus I don't see a problem with making an adult Power Rangers show.
I am a huge fan of Garo, Kamen Rider, and Ultraman. I used to be obsessed with Power Rangers when I was a kid. When I saw the Japanese versions, I liked them way better because they were a mix of light and dark.
Did someone say Kamen Rider Amazons? Holy hell is that series messed up. Main character killing his own family in screen. Blinding himself with his claws. Killing innocent infected children and adults violently.
This just sounds like a adult version of one of my favorite childhood cartoons. 100% approve for the adult community and if parents feel a way about it maybe they should filter what their kids watch cause obviously wasn’t made for kids
It can be dark but to a certain extent. I would love to see (and feel) how dangerous it is to be a Power Ranger. (But refer or allude to the drugs, sex, headshots, etc.) That’s what this short felt like. It wasn’t just a playground fight, it was a battle that evolved into a war, but also has consequences (Rangers dying, betraying one another, civilians selling your identity out, law enforcement thinking you’re a vigilante) it has potential to be awesomely mature while having callbacks to our childhood.
This was a masterpiece! Not hoping for a full length movie, but would def like a second short like this!!
Honestly, I'd LOVE a full length R-Rated take on the series. If they could do something Deadpool-esc with the movie, I think it would be a huge hit. I mean, the series as a whole already has a big campy side to it. If they played on the camp, while added in some more high risk fight scenes it would be a fun movie to watch.

I have nothing against you but to whom would you listen? To the so called critics? Or to the audience to whom the movie-makers are trying to sell their films? Imagine what could have happened if the producers of the Sonic Movie did not listen to the audience when they called to change the look of Sonic. He's not the only one, I watched this a few years back and I tried to like it, but I lost interest in it, I mean In my opinion Power Rangers isn't supposed to be dark, it's always and will be a kid friendly show, that's the traditional and legend of the Power Rangers, and the same goes for the 2017 movie as well, lost interest on that as well, the 90's movie THE BEST!!!!

I loved this. I also have the Kyle Higgins hardcover Power Ranger comics which went into a darker path, which I loved. I see no problem with this being dark. In fact, if you watch the original Japanese Power Rangers, there were some dark moments in it. Also series like Kamen Rider and Garo were a darker take on the Tokusatsu genre.
What got me from this short was the megazord being sliced like nothing... hope was destroyed in one swoop.

I saw this Power Rangers short in 2015, when it was first uploaded to UA-cam.
I was shocked by the dark tone, the bloody violence and the portrayal of the rangers and that they split up. It having been set after the events of Zeo, I didn't understand why it Zack, and Jason were in it(and Jason being killed so violently) James Vanderbeek wasfine as Rocky, but I thought Later Sackoff should have played Kat, as she replaced Kim after she left the team to pursue a gymnastics career. During Zeo, Rocky was the Blue Ranger, Adam was the Green Ranger, Aisha the Yellow Ranger, Kat was the Pink Ranger, and Tommy became the leader as the Red Ranger. So my confusion led me to question why Joseph Kahn ignored the continuity set up with Zeo. It was dark and edgy, but also made by a professional director with professional actors and a budget bigger than any "fan film" on UA-cam.
Maybe in this version there was no zeo lineup just maybe the Jason giving his power to rocky and trini dying with her power and no Adam or aisha which is why there not shown

Being a fan of mighty Morphin power rangers still til this day, I totally wanted to see this expanded. I don't see why they can't make an adult version film like this and keep the more pg style tv shows for kids. Would def watch this, looking forward to JDFs Legend of the White Dragon film as it will be more dark and adult, it's power rangers inspired but not power rangers

This Ranger Version is like if MMPR was a Manga that was adapted into film. With Marvel and DC going woke this is a great opportunity for Hasbro to to capitalize but I doubt they will.

This was an amazing short film! I can definitely see why it was taken down, as it was absolutely NOT for kids, but for old-school fans who are looking for a powerful re-imagining of the Power Rangers, it's 100% amazing! It will never happen, but I wish that this could be turned into an ongoing series specifically aimed at an older audience...

this is a GREAT short, god i love it, it actually makes a LOT of sense, i mean think about it, the onyl time the government or any government speaks about idealistic virtues and fighting for what's right because it's the right thing to do is in times of war, or when their trying to play to peoples idealistic nature, look at starship troopers the commercials and propaganda paint a VERY different picture than the show itself, it'd make sense that zordon would use teenagers because their lack of political and critical thinking would make them easy to manipulate and use, it's insane how much more believable this story is to the original

because what I fell in love with as a kid, I DO wish would grow up with me, but I also want my kids to have something great and innocent to grow up with, that's at least similar.

Joseph Kahn's Power Rangers Short Film was shit, the story was rushed and incomplete and he didn't even use a morphing effect. If you want to tell a story of the power rangers, then a short film is not the right path. I give it 1 out of 10 stars.

I used to try any exuse to get out of 8th grade football practice just to try and get home to watch the show. Tommy, the green ranger made the show awesome and everyone knew it. That's why he's played more rangers than anyone else. The show got boring as I got older. Now my children are watching it and wearing the Halloween costumes. This is the first I'm hearing about dark power rangers and I'm interested again now. Thanks for the memory lane and current info, it's appreciated.

What I find so depressing is that this short film is meant as a SATIRE of dark and gritty Hollywood reboots, making a message about how if Hollywood made something like this, people would eat it up...and it was proven right as people proceeded to eat it up.
When I was 22 going on 23 when it came out, I didn't personally. The opening scene with the Rangers running with guns in first person I liked because it looked like a trailer for a Call of Duty or Halo game. Other than that, every other part of P/R I hated. Especially taken a Ranger like Rocky - a Ranger not many fans liked after he replaced Jason - and make him evil. If Van Der Dick was any existing MMPR character in this thing, it would've been either a "Lord Zedd" or "Rito Revolto" in the thing. Also Kimberly wasn't blonde. That was Katherine.
I liked the idea of the short but I felt like it was too dark and lost a good chunk of the spirit of the show. Young Justice is a good representation of what I envision. I want real stakes and consequences, situations where the bad guys win and things go wrong, young adults doing young adult things and dealing with the ramifications of their actions. There’s so many stories you could tell especially with as many different versions as they’ve had.

Kahn basically jacked the whole darker concept from a Mortal Kombat short film that was online some odd lengthy years before it’s own release.
if you didnt like this then you have no seat at the table. this short was the best portrayal of power rangers ever. obviously there were a ton of production flaws with this but this short was so much better than the new feature. the new reboot of show and film series better lean in this direction or at the very least as dark as Titans or it will be an ultimate fail.

I thought the last Power Rangers was a box office success? I remember it had a low budget. And I know a ton of people and reviewers who really liked it. Including me. Why didn’t ever get a sequel? The cast was great too!

He has done a few alternate takes on beloved properties, but this was released under his Bootleg Universe YT channel, where he gives opportunities to other directors who have the same desire to explore the edges of certain properties in a short form, though I will say the YT channel will have the 'clean' versions of these films, I believe the uncensored version of this one is available on Vimeo.
If they do a film adaptation of the 1969 power comic that would be just a gritty as this and I would live for it😍

The Problem wasnt the Gritty Violence but the Boringly Bad Plot!!! Main issue was that The Mortal Kombat setting wasnt even a Tournament but a pretty Shallow chase and hunt theme alongside a terribly training setup for the noobie Cole protagonist!!!* 🧐🤷♀️🙄🤦♀️👎

I want a full length movie of this. All this false anger and being "offended" by everything is ruining Cinema and art in general.
At worst, the 'offended' people act offended just to get rid of anyone they don't like, especially for propaganda purposes.

When I first saw, Power Rangers I was a little kid and I'm still a fan to this day it will be awesome if it becomes a movie
