  • ⏰ Microsoft is removing image backup capability from Windows. We'll make an image backup using a free third-party alternative.
⏰ Using EaseUS Todo to create a backup image
After installing the free version of EaseUS Todo, create a backup image is as easy as clicking on Create Backup, selecting a disk backup, choosing your external drive as a destination, and clicking on Backup Now. The result, placed on your external drive, is easy to examine and can be used to restore individual files, or the entire hard disk.

Yes indeed it is free. However this program is made in China. Please be aware that it can be used as a surveillance tool by the CCP. When you install the program for the first time, it always wants to phone back to the server in China. I have installed a firewall and has detected that the program is constantly connecting outbound traffic back to the server. For me, concerning about privacy issue, personally I am sticking with the UK program -Macrium Reflect free v8 for as long as I can.😱😯😦

Great and clear explanation if you want to make an image of your C drive!!! with EaseUS. Before I had seen this video, I did the same as with Macrium Reflect and only made a backup of the C drive that I could then restore and that always went well. But before I saw this video I did the same thing with ease US and my computer could no longer boot and the dealer had to set everything up again. This video shows me what I did wrong. You have to backup the entire disk that C is on, in my case disk 1, and when you restore it, everything appears to go perfectly. Thank you very much for the clear explanation Leo!!!

Thank you for making this video. Really useful as I was looking for a free alternative to the old Windows 7 backup.
I have a question though. I noticed you selected high compression for your image backup. However, t seems to be an option only available for paid versions of EaseUS. Could you clarify whether you are using a paid version in the video even though you are explaining how to use the free one? It's fine if that's the case. I'm just trying to understand if that's the reason I'm being asked to upgrade if I select the high compression option,

If the vault is not mounted, you're backing up encrypted files that you should be able to restore and mount later. If the vault is mounted, I'm not sure if you can specify the mounted drive to be backed up, but if you can then you would be backing up the UNencrypted files.

Leo, great presentation. I have seen many demonstrations of backups but, almost no demos of restoring the image. Big questions is 'do it work?' And how does the restore work when attempting to restore the operating system itself. Many restores do not function well when it actually comes to the operating system.

    • @askleonotenboom
      @askleonotenboom  4 місяці тому

When you select OS I believe EaseUS makes some assumptions about what partitions should be included. I want ALL partitions, hence disk.

  • @itpugil
    @itpugil 10 місяців тому +1

Redo rescue and rescuezilla are preferable when your own OS is corrupted(you only have 1 computer) and you need to boot off an operating system(in this case a linux-based OS) with the imaging software via a flash drive. But I've been experiencing failed backups usiing redo rescue lately, gettiing errors such as "device drive disconnected". It may be because of my partitioning sequence or the move to GPT from MBR, I dunno.
This particular method shown in the video requires you to do it on the OS layer, if the OS is corrupted, you might need to take the drive out, plop it into another system and install the easeuse todo free software in there and start the restore. Similar to Aomei Backupper software.

***** READ THIS BEFORE BACKING UP*****
If you read the comments , and I had the same situation, the back up did not work!! Well it did and it didnt. Most newer computers have the uefi system. When installing windows, windows creates these other small partitions and one of these is the efi boot loader. I had done multiple backups and for some reason when i checked off the box for the entire drive, the todo system did not see or for some reason did not back up the efi boot loader files. The end result is that when you restore, it wipes everything off and restores what it backed up. In my case, since the boot loader partition was gone, my bios would not even give me the option for the hard drive any longer, it just wasnt therre to boot to. If you are backing up the files, make sure that one of the hard drive partitions on that particular drive is around 100mb. This is likely the uefi boot loader partition. There may also be a 16 mb partition, but to be honest , I dont know what is in those folders. If you so the boot loader partition or one that is around 100mb, then you are golden. If you dont see it, wait for it to pop up, refresh, close program, etc, whatever you need to do, but dont perform the backup without also backing up the boot loader. IF YOU BACKED UP AND DID NOT HAVE THE PARTITION, YOU ARE PROBABLY WONDERING WHY YOUR HARD DRIVE IS MISSING FROM THE BIOS BOOT MENU. In my case, i fixed it. First, i loaded a copy of windows onto another drive just to get the computer up. then i loaded up disk management (or search for "create and format partitions). Using this program i did a shrink volume and made a seperate 100 mb partition on this drive. Then i followed the instructions on either of these 2 videos (which was a little intimidiating so i watched several times) and the problem was fixed. Actually the first time i just let everytign restart adn it still didnt start but as it turns out , after perfoming these few steps to remake the uefi boot loader files, you have to shut down the computer. then upon restarting , everyhting should be fine. Hi Leo,
I watched your video and it was fantastic!
Everyone should make backups as you detailed.
I have been caught out many times, I would like to hear your opinion on the following.
I have a dell laptop (with win11 home edition) which 'freezes' every few months and all the recovery techniques usually fail.
Luckily, over the years I have learned to save all may 'personal data' to a usb drive.
I also have a usb 'startup' drive which I had made when I bought the laptop, and luckily I managed to rebuild my laptop from 'factory' settings, but then I have to reinstall ALL programs again.
(I then copy my 'personal data' files from the usb flash drive I have)
So, now, my laptop is now working again.
But I need a better recovery process.
I bought a 2TB usb HDD, and created 2 partitions on it.
I then downloaded Veracrypt portable and saved this to partition 1.
I then downloaded easeus (free version) and saved a system image(plus incremental backups) to partition 2 of the 2TB usb drive.
I then created a easeus startup usb disk.
My question is: If my, laptop 'dies' again and I boot from the 'easeus' startup disk, will it recognise my ' vera encrypted ' partitions , including the one with the system image backup?
    thankyou.

I've never seen a good description of how to backup files and folders with EaseUS. I want to do incremental backups daily with a full backup weekly of about a dozen folders. Nowhere have I seen an explanation of how to do that. The confusion for me is, If i set a backup as Daily, incremental, does the program automatically make the first backup a full backup? It must, right? Or do I have to manually make the first full backup for the program? Do I have to then have two backups running, a full and an incremental, covering the same folders? Or should I click the box for "Appoint daily first backup as Full"? But I don't want a Full backup daily. Seems like everyone trying to explain this is suffering from "the curse of knowledge."

This is very helpful Leo. Thank you for your videos. I've been using Ease for a bit now, but I am still sort of new to properly backing up my C Drive on my laptop. I'm pretty sure I setup to do image backups. I think I even some how set it up to do increments. Haha. No idea how that works. I have a question. I am. a bit confused as to how to set up incrementals up to a set of three before restarting to delete and restart incrementals without removing the first full backup. The objective here is to have the initial full backup, but then just subsequent incrementals for changes along the weight. You didn't cover that at all in the video, so I'm wondering if you can explain that. Thanks. Jerry, Tokyo.

    1)
@3:34 -- Excluding files from being backed up is not in the free version -- at least that is what is listed on EaseUS's version comparison chart.
I do not believe that you can enable that option on the Free version. It is probably there to entice folks to pay for an upgrade, by showing features, but not being able to enable them without paying for one of the upgrades.
These are all of their versions:
"Free", "Home", Workstation", "Server", "Advanced Server", "Technician"
My guess is that no matter which version you download, you get the same one -- only that various features will be enabled or disabled.
Pay for an upgrade, and the feature, which is already installed, gets enabled.
    2)
@4:32 -- "How long your backup will take..."
On EaseUS's site, in their comparison chart, they have a "Speed" rating, from 1 (slowest) to 4 (fastest) stars.
The "Free" version has 1 star. So it looks like they might be throttling the backup's file copying speed.
Leo, did you notice a slower than expected amount of time, based on how much data you have, as well as from backing up with other software?
Did they throttle the backup speed?
    3)
Was there an option to make emergency bootable media?
Also, if you screw up your computer, but it will still boot up, can you restore from your backup while Windows is running?
Or must you boot from an emergency flash drive to restore everything (to ensure no files are in use, if Windows was running)?
    4)
If there is an emergency media option, can you use it on other computers?
I am considering one of the paid versions. That can get too expensive for me, if I have to make repeat purchases for every computer. And I would rather not install 3rd party software on more than one of my computers, if I can boot from emergency media and perform a backup (and restore if needed). I do crypt-o mining on a computer, and I trust no 3rd party apps for that computer. But bootable media would be a solution for me to do a backup.
How versatile is the emergency boot media?
If someone loses their computer in a burglary or fire, being able to use emergency bootable media to restore to a new computer might be critical.
    Thank you.

"Windows 11 allows read access to every system file, even those that are running and in memory, it's a bit nuanced. Windows utilizes mechanisms like VSS and other kernel-level features to ensure that files can be accessed for backup purposes even if they are in use.
