As a Japanese rail fan I find it amazing that TGV PSE trainsets have racked up 10M kilometers per set and were still in good condition after 40 years.
Our Shinkansen trains are typically retired after 12-15 years and 6M or so kilometers per set.
To be fair, they where completely refurbished two times each.
They were still going strong and the original plan was to start retiring them in 2024 when the new "TGV M" will enter service. But because some of the parts they use are unique to them, maintaining them over 40 years after they began service was a challenge. So SNCF bought more current "Euroduplex" and had them all retired by 2019.
Fun fact: The original TGV livery(the orange one) was featured on the Lego Creator Horizon Express set!
That’s true
F A X
we all know
I've got it at home
Ah yes
The fact that these trains look modern to me while being from the late 70s because here in Romania we still ride in carriages made in the 60s haha
The USA is on par with Romania? Or worse damn
Yeah? Here you have locomotives from 60's and also the carriages
@@belgianlettuce5409 Here in Canada on the Transcontinental route the coaches are all 1950's stock, refurbished in the 80s or 90s being pulled by 1980's locomotives. Don't expect to make it quick though, you have to wait for freight trains as goods are more valuable to the railways than people (in the USA too, I know), If the train is behind and the crew runs down the clock, expect to be stuck for hours while they wait for a fresh crew (because having the spares onboard is apparently too much to ask)
@@FreeManFreeThought thank you comrade, you put much effort on your comment! :) Yeah here in philippines, trains are very underrated so much infact there are only 2-6 train journey everyday here....... (PNR)

this and the 0 Series Shinkansen in Japan were the most iconic symbols for High-Speed Railways. Farewell, Train à Grande Vitesse Sud Est
I agree.
We focus so much on the rolling stock that we forget that the true achievements were the construction of the Lignes à Grande Vitesse and the Shinkansen lines themselves. Absolutely immense investments that have paid dividends in speed, comfort, cost, and convenience for all travelers in each country.
As an American, I am envious of that kind of foresight and investment by the railways.
*Looks at Japan
That SNCF tone never gets old
I'm sure if you're French it does lol
The old was classy too! bigsoundbank.com/detail-0396-the-sncf-jingle.html
Agreed
I love the Atlantique livery. Looks iconic for me, despite the original Orange is legendary
The original orange livery will forever be my favorite of all high-speed trains; and, it will forever bum me out to know that I will never be able to ride on a Sud-Est.
When you get in a TGV with 300/320 km/h, it looks like time doesn't exist anymore. It give a great feeling. Also like all old interiors, colors and comfort of trains, like 70ths, 80ths.💺
RIP 0 Series Shinkansen and TGV-Sud-Est. Two most iconic high-speed trains.
Great video. Way back in 1991 when I rode in first class, they offered meal service at your seat. I ordered a sandwich and a glass of wine and it was quite expensive!
Watching image slides with a train sound as BGM feels like being briefed before starting a mission in Train Simulator
Imagine being a child in 1980 ,and seeing one of these for the first time ,it must have been like boarding a spaceship !
J’ai été une enfant dans les années 80 qui a pris le TGV à plusieurs reprises.
Ça semblait normal. J’ai plus été choquée ensuite de prendre le TER à l’adolescence, le TGV étant ma norme.
Germany will give a second redesign for the ICE 1 to keep them +10 more years in service 😁
My first time in a TGV was in the Sud est line in the orange livery. And a few years later in the Atlantic livery, while on Interrail in France. We made a Tour de France, first from Liège to Paris, Paris- Marseille, Marseille - Briancon, Briancon-Tours, Tours-Paris, Paris-Liège. 3 girls, a small tent and lots of fun.
The last livery was UGLY. REALLY UGLY. Orange was the best.
@@MarceloBenoit-trenes the carmillon looks good imo, it was a coherent look for all SNCF trains by the central govt. Like how all DB trains are white and red, Renfe are White and Purple...
Great tribute. Do you know what is done with the retired train sets? Are they sold to other operators? Or disassembled and recycled?
I Hope they got into a museum
@rtrfan739 at least trainset 16 was preserved. 01 is still around, fate still undecided.
There was talks about using them as 200kmh intercites but those plans were scrapped and SNCF ordered new CAF comfort 200 trains
When I travelled on this class of train last year I diddnt know howlucky I was to get this chance! A beautiful train, modern, fast and great technology that is 40 years old.
Hello, you just beat the vibe I usually feel out of Simply aviation. And I'm an a geek not a trainspotter much.
Subscribed! Hope there's some English stuff here
Such a fine train, so sad to see it go. Much like the 125s (class 43) over here, much loved, comfortable, rode like a dream. Newer trains just aren't as comfortable.
One of the most legendary high-speed trains that can reach 300+ km/h
Hello again my friend. Just wanted to wish you a very Happy New year and may 2021 bring you much success. Stay safe and catch up again real soon.
Wow. What a classic and beautiful train. Sad that we won’t see them anymore. 😍😢
It's quite heartbreaking seeing them go, I got TGV Sud-Est 45 from jouef in Atlantique
This was a great video! I learned so much about the TGVs! Apparently I rode one when my family visited France in 1989 but sadly I have no recollection of that train trip. : (
Farewell and greetings from Japan! Japanese Shinkansen has a similar ticketing to TERGV: when you ride Shinkansen for only one station (or two in some intervals), you need only a local ticket plus a small surcharge (860 yen for one station and 1080 yen for two, if I'm remembering right), very cheap compared to long-distance Shinkansen tickets. This is only applicable for second class.
I had a seat service once in the TGV. The agent told me that they usually do it when the train is not crowded. They take your order and bring it to you like half an hour later. That is the only time I saw it.
I just love how you stuck up your middle finger at the sink when it did not work the first time LMAO!!!!!
This is the way.
@@SimplyRailway Mandalorian reference, nice!
Am I the only one that thinks that the appearance of the TGV was 40 years ahead of its time?
Check out the polish ep09
In Spain a similar TERGV concept is used on some AVEs; Girona-BCN, Calatayud-ZGZ...
Sounds similar to how Paris-Marseille TGVs also continue on to Nice but at 'normal' speed?
TGV PSE was the only TGV I've ever traveled with. That was when we travel from Paris to Zurich in 1999.
2.29 lol this TGV Duplex on the left looks very funny...xD
Another great video Thibault!
Thanks for the lots of details about TGV. - Heinz
Excellent presentation of the history of these trains! One of your best.
Great video! Here in Stockholm we have a type of trains called C6. They are from 1970-74 and are bound to be scrapped in a few years. There are also trains similar to C6 called C14 and C15. My profile picture is a C14 train. All of these are collectively known as Cx trains.
I saw some of the grey nice looking swedish TGVs, X2000 😉, passing close to Gamlastan during my trip in Stockholm in may 2010. And your profile pic reminds me of the tram to Saltsjobaden, where I stayed 2 or 3 nights at the Grand Hotel, during this same trip. I remember well this little blue train. Nice memories of your beautiful city and its countless islands.
Shame. The Sud EST was the most iconic TGV of them all. Especially in the orange livery. Glad that I've got a model.
The differently shaped heads of the HST result from the different speeds at which the trains are supposed to travel. They were determined classically in the wind tunnel. The ICE 1 was the “slowest” train and had a rounder nose, the first French TGV, which was supposed to be faster, already had a pointed, angular nose. Even faster or newer ones already tend to duck shapes, although these are only really necessary with the Japanese HST. - Cheers, Heinz
I remember taking the tgv orange 2nd generation from Geneva to Paris. These trains honestly were the best, its sad that they are replacing them with the duplex models now
01 should be preserved..
01 has been preserved.
@@ChrisCooper312 👌
@@ChrisCooper312 it has been? The last that I heard is that it´s fate was still undecided as next year if all goes well, it will tour the network as a tribute for the PSE trains.
@@ChrisCooper312 No that's false. The 2 powercars and one trailer will be preserved, but the rest will be scrapped.
This jingle that is played before every announcement always brings me back into „rattle that rock“ by Pink Floyd‘s guitarist David gilmour. Can understand now why gilmour used it haha
Here in the UK. We have Intercity 125 sets which are 40+ years old and no sign of a replacement for the Network Rail, CrossCountry, or Scotrail sets
These trains were in service for over 40 years then got took out of service, but here in England we either keep trains in service for too long or scrap them after a few years
Este modelo de tren es espectacular. Me gustaba con color naranja. No sabía que luego habían cambiado los colores (negro, púrpura, blanco)
Respect from India, Locomotives, or rolling stock still in Mint condition after 40 years of High Speed service, shows the efforts, maintenance & devotion invested.
We indians would like these in 'Scrap ke bhaav mein'....
Namaste from India, Pls keep it up, in the times of Air Travel.
Sad to learn that they are gone. I remember taking it from Paris to Saint Etienne in the autumn of 1981, just a few months after the entry in service, when only about half of the LGW between Paris and Lyon was in service and the speed was limited to 260 km/h (which was still by far the fastest in Europe then). I also remember the number of the trainset which was 03. Who knows where it's now?
Salutări din România 🙋♂️🙋♂️🙋♂️🇷🇴🇷🇴🇷🇴🇷🇴
PSE have 2 variations of train : bicourant mode(1,5kv and 25kv) and switzerland tricourant (🇨🇵 bicourant + 🇨🇭15kv).
RIP you will always be remembered
Why is it called 'TGV Sud Est', when its in the northwest of france? And which trains will replace the beatiful old ones?
I travelled a few times with them at a time, where high speed trains in austria were pure fiction - as today 🤔
I like your channel, Bussi
The first high speed line in France was Paris - Lyon in 1981, called LGV (Ligne à Grande Vitesse, High Speed Line in french) Sud Est. TGV Sud Est can continue their trip to Marseille and Nice in a classic line after Lyon. The LGV Sud Est has been prolonged to Valence in 1994 then to Marseille in 2001. The second LGV, LGV Atlantique, Paris - Le Mans in 1989 with TGV "Atlantique", second generation of TGV (first able to ride a 300km/h, first gen of TGV Sud Est was limited to 260km/h before some modification to be able to ride at 300km/h too). During all the life of TGV, new line, new service, new generation of TGV, TGV Sud Est has been used in a lot of regions, but they have kept their original name, their "generation name". TGV Sud Est.
What did they do with the retired train sets? Did they scrap them or sell them to another operator?
R.I.P tgv sud est
1978-2019
TGV SUD EST: let's have one last run for the tgvs!!!!!!
Boa viagem ai simply boa tarde lindo trein gostei show bom
Fun fact the orange verison was made into a lego set
Nice! But what is the train number (heading number) of this train which you usually mention in other videos?
Such a nice train, really a shame to get them out of service! At least, SNCF had refurbished them often, they look very modern and elegant. In comparison, our german ICE trains didn't improve with the years. Seats became less comfortable with every redesign and Interieur didn't change at all. For worse, years of economization nearly wrecked up the once indestructible ICE 1 sets.
My first 300 km/h ride. August 2006, Douai - Paris Nord - Douai, Sud-Est both ways, #08 "Rouen" and #82 "Trappes". Incredible first feeling of a High Speed travel on the most classic train to do it. Sad to see them go, even if they were really old already.
BTW back then Nord TGVs used to have vending machines in the Bar coach. Are they gone?
The first set of KTX trains in south korea resembles the first TGV sad to hear they're going to go 😥
When these trains were launched, they were so far ahead of everything else in Europe it even woke up my native "Deutsche Bundesbahn" ... though they surely took their time with the ICE train...
Siemens definitely rule the industry now, though, so perhaps the delay was for the better (cf. de Havilland Comet disaster o.o). Even Spain's ditching their home-grown system for ICEs.
@@TwoWholeWorms Do they? I'm not following the passenger rail vehicle market closely but I think Alstom are still quite big (incl. Bombardier) and the Chinese are ready to grab most of the business coming up in emerging markets...
@@notroll1279 Well, most of the HSTs I see here in Spain are basically ICEs, and the Dutch have started eyeing them enviously since their offering (Thalys) is, basically, just the same sets featured in this video, soo... *shrug emoji goes here*
But yeah, I get the point. That said, the e320s are Siemens-made, though the non-international trains on HS1 are Hitachi (bloody nice trains, actually), and who knows what they're going with for HS2. Siemens definitely make the smoothest rides, though, IME. Barcelona to Girona on their Ave-branded sets can't be touched for ride quality.
I think you said it best, why are they retiring these sets when they've been refurbished just a few years ago. I'm getting an HO scale Sud-Est soon, it just sucks that they're being retired with no future.
There are retired because there are 40 years old ( a train is designed for 30 years lifetime)
Outdated technology (they use DC motors, while new trains use brushless AC, for example), many components and parts are now obsolete. And, after 40 years, many parts have aged, with a higher failure rate and more costly repairs as some parts, designed to last the lifetime of the trains, are now due to be replaced and suffer failures.
2011 was 8 years prior to the retirement of these trains. i wouldnt say nearly a decade is "just a few years ago."
Rip the sud est honorable memories 1981 -2019

Sorry, but in Spain we are Avant, the TGV regional services between Madrid and Toledo, in Catalonia cromo Barcelona to Lleida,, Tarragona, Girona and Figueres, and some others lines i Andalucia.
Hopefully some trainsets are preserved.
There's also a 15kv version of the train set capable of running into Switzerland this one is a 1.5kv 25kv 50hz version. of the TGV fleet only PSE TGV POS & Euroduplex have the capability to operate on Swiss and German 15kv 16.7hz overhead wires for 15kv operation the DC pantograph 1.95m for German & Austrian wires while Swiss 15kv wires can support French 25kv 1.45m pantographs. Speaking of the Avelia Horizon the replacement for this train if the factory in Eastern France can't manufacture enough of those to to replace the entire TGV PSE Fleet then the Hornell New York Factory can make them because they should share the same parts as an Avelia Liberty. Although going to be shipped out from Port Newark, NJ into Lorient La Rochelle & Calais🇫🇷 to where they can be powered up for the trip to Paris
If i could use the french announcement sound for a tone on my phone i so would!
I love it, find it unique compared to the English chimes we have over here and also it brings back great memories of my first time going to france (lille then Disneyland paris), been to paris nord and the city since then also😍
Absolutely agree! I love the tone at any French station. Won't be getting back any day soon to Europe (Thanks Covid!) so just have to listen on youtube for my memories. Can't find the tone anywhere to download as a phone tone.

I have a doubt . Which is getting retired . The black one u rode on or tgv atlantique or the orange one ?
All of the TGV Sud-Est trainsets were retired in December 2019
Possibly a dumb question from the USA:
Is TGV service being phased out? (say it isn't so), or will very fast trains continue to streak through France on new fast locomotives?
No, TGV services will still exist as they are public services
Merci
I hope I'll get to ride a TGV or Shinkansen someday.
Fastest train I've been on was the Amtrak Wolverine in 1985 (peak speed 79mph (about 130 k/mh).
I believe the locomotives 23001 23002 have been preserved at technicentres,
This trains have never been modernized it seems. Not like it´s german counterpart, the ICE1 which went through one modification at least with a new one right now to extent it´s service span up into 2030. The seats of this train look like they are 30 years old.
These trains have been refurbished 2 times
The sink faucet at 15:44 just wants to provoke you. It's French, they do it as a humorous insert.
Huh, the Duplex sets that run from Barcelona still have the Atlantique livery... I wonder if that's intentional? Man, those seats are comfy...
Adieu! Late salute from Formosa.
Interesting they operate TGV as TERGV, will those be operated with Duplex or Reseau in the future?
I guess many will want to buy a first class massage seat after the trains are decommissioned.
These services are now operated with TGV Duplex and TGV POS sets
Are there any level crossings on the High Speed Lines or are they all grade separated?
I supose you live in the US?
For Europeans and People from Japan this is a well known fact and your question looks on the surface to stupid to answer.
But i know there are no stupid questions only stupid answers.
All High speed lines are from design on purpose separated like flightlevels of aircraft.
There are only crossings by tunnels and bridges with other forms of transport.
Those lines are build straight and direct as possible for at least 300KMH cruisespeed.
They want to go to 400KMH cruisespeed with new stock.
Thats also why such a HST line and its stock is so costly to build.
For the medium travel range (up to 1000 km ) between congested Urban centers a HST train system is the way to go.
In the US with long range travel between urban centers the aircraft is king.
So why is train travel still a much used form of passenger transport outside the US?
Historicly all infrastructure in Europe and Japan was mostly destroyed by WW2.
For rebuilding and the emerging cold war the railways was the first that had to be rebuild and modernised to get cheap fast transport.
Also the congested urban citties close together make a train from centre to centre much faster and convient.
@@obelic71 I live in Australia and we have no high speed trains. I presumed there were none but wanted to make sure and if there were any how did it work with a high speed train? Some people here are pushing for something similar but credible talk is it just wouldn't be viable. Had a railway engineer tell me even Melbourne-Sydney wouldn't make sense. Fare would be in the hundreds of dollars, you can get a plane ticket for about $100
@@COLINJELY The distances in Australia are even greater between urban city centers then in the US i presumed.
The US is only a country, Australia is a continent!
Every region developes and grows into its own specific forms of transport.
For example Roadtrains work only in Australia not in the rest of the world.
All infrastructure that gets build and makes logical sense even if it costs lots of money is an investment in the future.
For example the dire needed new Gotthard basetunnel in Switserland takes 50 years to pay itself back.
All things build just for political ego are just a waist of money.
Hopefully these sets are preserved. If not completely scrapped already.
They saved trainset 16
Great video !!
Have you had Patrick often?
I really love france trains
Nice video! One question. Does this retirement effect the oldest Thalys? Does anyon know?
No
Thanks
great trip report however this must have been emotional for you and many others in France who rode these many times
the tgv really did start the high speed train revolution in Europe because 40 years later many places in France have high speed and also other countries like Spain Italy Germany UK etc now have it and growing so thanks to the tgv (also thank the original high speed shinkansen trains in japan because we all wouldn't have high speed without it too)
The last Tgv train had been canceled due to covid. Meanwile in poland- EP09 Locomotive painted in special livery, special train, cinema car, and movie that passengers can watch with VR goggles. All of this because of... 100th anniversary of the Warsaw Battle.
tip: the train was recreated but the 2nd floor was added & some changes added
Never liked them. Compared to corail stock they're quite uncomfortable.
Took one from Paris to Milan couple of years ago.
The double deckers are a huge improvement.
That's not a TGV PSE. Between Paris and Milan there are Réseau sets which have been badly refurbished. The TGV PSE have been well refurbished compared to the réseau.
This is the train that saved European Railways.
Has SNCF any plans to make special fan trips with TGV Sud Est trainsets after COVID-19 pandemic?
I don't think they do...
They won't get rid of the TGV Atlantique and Reseau very soon will they?
They probably will. One thing I know is that SNCF had already placed order for the next generation TGV trainsets.
The Atlantique sets with TVM 430 will remain in service (and may receive an Inoui refreshment) and the Réseau sets will remain in service until 2026 approximately, if it's not more
@@EPS_ProductionsI suppose it is quite nice to pretty much have the original design for a few more years :)
@@EPS_Productions the Reseau ones are the most similar to the PSE sets at present, right?
@@MarceloBenoit-trenes Nothing is similar to the PSE. The Atlantique and the Réseau sets are totally different
Excellent and very informative but why was 01 nicknamed "Patrick"?
It comes from the first name of the son of the very first TGV driver of the Strasbourg depot (the tests of the 01-02 pre-series having been done in the plains of Alsace). The second train was nicknamed Sophie. These nicknames made it easier to differentiate the trains during the tests mentioned earlier in 1978-1979

Sad to see SNCF retired those TGV Sud-Est sets. They should have transfer them to Ouigo and allow them to expand their services......
By the way how much more did you pay for TGV service from Calais to Lille Europe compared to classic TER service to Lille Flandres.
When these sets were retired they were wreck things on wheels according to those who were maintaining these sets. Even the first set had water infiltrations during its farewell tour. And Ouigo has a sufficient number of trains, they don't need more

In my opinion you can't really see the TGV's age outside of it as it still functions 100% and altough it doesn't look as modern, it still seems to be in good shape. But I think the interior could be better, the seats look comfy but not modern and also the carperts kinda look dirty and old... It's just the whole inside that looks old and dirty if you copare it to new highspeed trains which nearly look like 1st class airplanes. See frecciarossa, ICE, Railjet, AGV,...
wonder if nsw government could buys these to replace some country nsw trains in nsw Australia but only problem no sleepers on it i see
For people wondering what wil happen to them: They can be used for parts or recycling, also very common selling them to other (mostly very ppo countries) depends on the condition of the train) welathier countries buy these as well) where they will drive for probably another 10 to 30 years, these countries also buy these trains for parts. So if you really want to drive them again go to Sudan, you can still spot them there how ever not at the same speed and it very harsh circumstances. But this is a very extreme example.
No, SNCF is scrapping everything and the parts of the TGV will never be reinvested in railways.
@@EPS_Productions I saw old SNCF stuff also in Romania...
@@viktorcsanyi726 Yes but the TGV won't be sold to Romania because of absbestos. The older trains have been sold before the asbestos legislation, and the newer X 72500 which have been sold to Romania don't contain asbestos
