Vin Diesel is one of the most successful actors working in Hollywood. But he didn't come from fame and wealth. Early on, he had a challenging time getting cast at all in an industry where few roles were created for multi-ethnic actors. So what did Vin Diesel do? He created a role for himself, writing, directing, producing and starring in his own independent short film called Multi-Facial. The film would go on to earn him roles in The Iron Giant and Saving Private Ryan. Here's how Vin Diesel did it.

*Maybe no one remembers this but the 1990s was still a very racist time.* You were either black or white. Anyone in between was background. The only trope for people like look like Diesel was the voiceless, worker bee. BUT don't be fooled: Hollywood still has traditional definitions of how skin color determines personality and station.
I just would have never thought that Vin Diesel would be the type to be so personable. I always heard reasons to not like Vin Diesel but all this is honestly such a breath of fresh air.
He’s given some really great interviews. Especially early on, but even now. He talks about movies in a way few people in his position so. Despite the projects he ultimately undertakes.

For real. The fact he wrote and was the driving force behind that short film, then just kept grinding to get his shot gives me a whole new respect for Vin. He's not just some--in his words--"misogynist, homophobic guido." Watching him in "Multi-facial" really displays his natural charisma and ability to effortlessly, and believably, perform on camera. I remember being blown away by his performance in Pitch Black. One of the best sci fi movies of that era IMO.

@shlomogmz I was also impressed by that movie, so I showed it to my friends and when we watched it together, I realized how boring the movie actually is.. 90% of the time nothing really happens, they just walk and look around.. only the last 10-15 minutes are worth watching..
Vin Diesel is underrated for sure. He isn't always stellar, but he actually has some great moments in the Riddick movies. You can tell he cares about the craft.
His movies are fun and entertaining. Sure, maybe a bit cheesy at times (Fast X for example), but they are fun.... I wish "they" would do more with the Riddick universe. Those movies were really good. I like the first one the best, and that was very low budget, but very well done.
I think his work outside those bigger films is good too. I really liked him in Find me guilty.

Me and my friends watched Multi-Facial in film school as a joke. "Lol, Vin Diesel directed a film." By the end, we weren't laughing. Very impressed.

Vin Diesel’s like our generation’s Stallone; we know he has the talent and skills, but he came into an era of action movies where it was easier to just take the money.
That’s a very interesting comparison. Vin Diesel is the 2000’s Sly Stallone! If the Fast and Furious ever ends (🤞), perhaps he will get his own Copland-type of movie, where he gets to display his dramatic chops again and play against type.

@@eyespy3001 Great shout, Cop Land was such a terrific role for the big guy and he nailed it.
He's actually a lot like Stallone, because they both put their own money into their own personal project movies to make a part just for themselves. And to varying degrees, had the same end result.
Their personal drive got them where they are.
Stallone was my first thought when I watched this video. The big difference being that Vin's personal movies ended up being resume fillers that allowed him to get noticed and get work, whereas Stallone's personal movie was Rocky, which is an all-time great movie.
That said, the story is still the same, which is cool to hear. Neither could get roles and jobs that they needed to pay the bills, so they wrote themselves into lead roles to get seen and show their potential.
Man, looking at his pre-Fast and Furious movies, you can tell that Vin had some serious talent. It's a bit of a shame he barely used it, and instead cashed in on the F&F movies.....
Would like him to try against-type roles (similar to what actors like Adam Sandler are doing)

I don't know how good he was before F&F, but what I can tell is that he's become a lesser actor with each sequel.
I dropped out of the franchise by the seventh one, but yesterday I catched a scene of the 8th maybe, I'm not really sure which one was... He's just reunited with Elsa Pataki's character and Charlize Theron gives him a gun and asks him to try busting out of there alive. Now, the dialogue is terrible because he openly states why he doesn't do that when he could just give her the gun back instead and convey the feelings of the character through his facial expression alone. What I get from that it's: one, the writers suck; two, either Vin isn't up to the part or they don't have any trust in him; three, Vin himself doesn't believe in his acting skills or he just doesn't care anymore because a good actor would have pushed to change the scene and he definitely has the power to do that
Honestly, now that you mention it, I get a kinda Adam Sandler vibe from his personality. I would love to see them work together in a drama.
And let's not forget how amazing Spielberg is...he loves movies so much that he watched a little unknown Indie movie and gave its star a chance, even wrote the role for him. An incredible person, really!

This completely changed how I see vin diesel
So much to admire here...Vin Diesel writing his own movies, Brad Bird and Steven Spielberg paying so much attention to short, independent films....just so much had to happen for this unknown actor to become a movie star.
Wow what an inspiring success story. I've always liked Vin Diesel, but have been disappointed for the past decade or so as he only seems to stick to shallow action blockbusters like the F&F series. I remember really liking his performance in Boiler Room. It was really refreshing to see him in a very different role as an expensive suit wearing stockbroker in a dramatic movie that had no action. He really should do another dramatic role to show people his real acting chops, like what Adam Sandler has done from time to time.
I’d love to see it, too. Or to see him direct more.
I would love to see more varied and dramatic roles from him. Had no idea he had this much range and depth, its a shame, I feel we lost out on alot of his talent.
Sandler is supposed to be doing another Safdie Brothers movie...I can't wait for that.
I got really bored at a hotel and was scrolling through some free show app on their television. I was watching Adam Sandler comedies, loved that Zohan movie as a kid, still got a few chuckles. Then I saw this movie pop up. The Cobbler. I took a glance at its summary, said "oh, that sounds interesting, how is this gonna be a comedy?" It wasn't a comedy, but it's one of my favorite current movies. Great movie about, quite literally, living in other people's shoes. And I loved it. For a moment, I forgot it was Adam Sandler. This isn't, like, a super powerful or emotional movie, no slamming doors and fingers pointed at the floor, but it was wonderful nonetheless. I hope Vin gets a movie like this soon, his years are catching up. I would love to see a movie where he's emotional. I love his Riddick movies, but I feel there's something deeper in him.
You know how Dave Batista has showed up and everybody was already writing on his shirt before he put it on? "Dumb knucklehead." "Boring action hero." "Comedy brute." Then he gets in a few roles besides Marvel, and his acting shines. Blade Runner 2047's screenplay reads like an unbelievably great book, and when you see Dave's scene in the intro, he's not some joke-throwing dumb mountain of a man, he's a vulnerable human that happened to be born as a robot, in a world where humans are robotically insensitive, lacking vulnerability. I think Vin Diesel has this same potential waiting for him, but again, everybody is writing on his shirt before he gets to put it on.
He did an amazing court drama playing a mobster who is also his own lawyer. Unfortunately I forgot the title.
Damn man, this video is a work of art. The storytelling prowess here, the interwoven narration and archival interviews and footage together in harmony that Danny's honed so delicately. It's magic.
This scratches that itch I've had ever since Tony left, and it's such a beautiful evolution on the format that feels unique and free. Thank you.

That out of the way, my sentiments mirror the OP's! I just stumbled across the channel a few days back and have been throughly enjoying the content. I'm not inyo most channels like this, as their content seems to always be 3x longer, so I never bother watching; however, I'd be willing to bet Danny still manages to have the same level of detail and info! ❤

Before the money and fame he really seemed like a modest, passionate, genuinely thoughtful guy. It's wild to see the footage in this video compared to the public persona he has now.
true he seems to be an arrogant dickhead that treat fast franchise as some kind of cult we are familily blah blah its all very wierd, in this video you see a really nice genuine and driven guy with some real acting talent instread he takes the easy route milking the dom torreto. he should look back as this video and maybe hell realise despite making many millions he has kinda lost his way. sly ,scwarzennegger and van dame yes has always had to flex muscles and run with a gun but vin you can really act and have genuine tallent such a shame you dont use it and take the easy way out all the time.

Fast X (2023) made only worldwide $697 million, on a huge budget of $340 million, so it has to make around $900 million to breakeven, F9: The Fast Saga (2021) made more ($726 million) in 2021 then Fast X made in a good time, when most people go to the cinema again, and that the tickets cost now a lot more then in 2021,and F9: The Fast Saga (2021) had a budget of $200 million.

Daym man... Had no idea about Vin Diesel's struggle. Pretty touching really, great to see he took matters into his own hands. Inspiring really. Good for him.
A good origin story based on yourself is to be original with what your vision fulfils. A role is what you create for yourself or for someone else. The story, dialogue, and direction it needs to be lead to. It can be Heath Ledger as The Joker or Keanu Reeves as Neo/John Wick or Sylvester Stallone as Rocky. What you create is art with a passion that doesn't need to be iconic or pristine right away. It will be some masterpiece later on.

"Multifacial" was a good short film. It was interesting and really personal to him. He showed a lot of vulnerability in it. The irony is it ultimately led to action movies where he's this tough guy who's not really vulnerable or grounded in reality like he is in his short film. Granted he's famous and rich now so I guess it was all worth it.
Fans need to encourage him. I don't think he really needed the Rock , since it seemed to cause on set stuff, but I think he should go further and show this side to him.

I see it as with success he's completed that character's progression, filled that missing piece which was expressed by his character in that first film. There's now a role for him. There's no need to be his past self anymore.

Speaking as someone who has spent too much time on the internet, social media has made it really easy to just dehumanize a person to the point where all that's left is a cringe-dispensing meme. It sounds like a "no-brainer", but it's really easy to fall into the trap of dismissing the personhood of others you don't really know, but are able to witness regularly at a distance. Videos like these help fight that

It means so much to me that someone made a video about Multifacial. As another very light skinned mixed black actor, this short film has had a place in my heart for the years since I’ve seen it.
As someone that's been acting for the last 10 years in Australia it's kind of made me realise that we live in a time of maximum exposure. You're better off making your own work rather than waiting for luck to drop you into a good rolee.
I wasn't expecting to get emotional during a UA-cam video about Vin Diesel.
Vin's not just an action star, he's been voicing out childhood favourites Iron Giant and Groot.
When you can express everything and anything thru "I am Groot" over and over again and the viewer feels what Groot is saying thru the voice, you have to be effing amazing as an actor.
And his voicing of the Iron Giant is similarly impressive.
what are you talking about. If he's such a great actor, making him say one phrase over and over again is a travesty for the art. It really is a situation of living long enough to become the villian, i doubt anyone under 20 even knows he even has a non-furious body of work.

I love him as Riddick. Watched the trilogy multiple times already and does not feel boring of it. Wish they continue with the story arc.
I can personally relate to this story myself. Where I lived not many opportunities for acting and filming, so once I was got out of college I was making my own personal movies, trying to give myself the opportunists along with anyone else who wanted a ride as well, from shorts to features. Submitted everyone of them to film festivals and never got in. From what I've been told for the majority of my films from some of the festivals, the movies I made would get cut at the 11th hour. Made me feel like the guy who goes to the Olympics, does very well, put's his heart, energy, and is consistent with his work, but gets 4th place the majority of the time, just missing the podium. I'm still trying, I have to. Filming is what I love, I'm at peace during those moments. I just wish I could share that love and passion of my work with more people. Life is a marathon, just got to keep pushing through.

it really did, it's interesting because I myself I'm not in the film industry nor am I pursuing a career in that field. But in my own personal field I've felt a bit demoralized because the grind is rather well "grinding". But stories like this are very motivational to me, it makes me want to keep doing what I can

My admiration for Vin Diesel has soared. Instead of succumbing to the industry's limitations, he charted his own path. In some ways, I see a reflection of myself in his journey, at least in the initial phase. As for the second part, I'm still striving to reach it. I'm embarking on a fresh new career, but at every turn, I've encountered rejection for the past few years - no-one wants to take a chance on me. My own family has urged me to abandon my dreams, and I've contemplated it. However, this video has ignited a spark within me, reminding me not to surrender. So, I extend my gratitude to you for creating this inspiring content and know that i am a subscriber for life.
As a mixed race dude, F&F was biiiiig in my house for us once we realized Vin was mixed. This video is really inspiring, it can be hard not to fit in based on the skin you born in. Another excellent video, Danny. I love how you’re able to make essays on popular subjects but somehow dig into them to find something niche or interesting that no one has really discussed. I knew of Strays, but had no idea about Multi Facial until now. Makes me really wish Vin would get out of his comfort zone again. But I guess for a guy like him who struggled a lot, I wouldn’t mind all the money for F&F and the mcu either lol

Vin in the 90s looked like he would have been great as a street shark if they did a live action movie.
I really only know Vin Diesel from F&F memes but this paints him in a whole new light. This is such a heartfelt piece of visceral, raw emotion, love it.
I hope as Vin gets older and the F&F franchise is behind him, he starts taking different and more nuanced roles that let him express his range. The old father figure or mentor type of role in movies and shows. He can also keep voice acting and kill it in various roles
It’s what I did. Got tired of not getting auditions, so I wrote and started in my own film. It Got nominated for best film at the Newfilmmakers LA film fest!

Vin Diesel and Sylvester Stallone had similar issues starting their acting careers. They also share similar solutions in that they wrote and starred in their own productions and have both had great success. Self made men.
They both also had physiques/aura that translated for action films and that's where their careers went.
Brought near to tears to consider how Diesel's work, intention and heart, testified for him in ways only known in the fulness of time.

This is a stellar essay, Danny. I work in film and I've always heard & read the story of Vin, but I've never seen it conveyed all together at once, especially not on video.
His real life story is captivating and not one most people know. The general public knows him more as Dom Toretto, but obviously hearing him speak he's nothing really like that character.
It's so great that you captured his story because it embodies a huge problem with acting and Hollywood. One being not enough roles for people of color, and two, what do you do if you're also ethnically mixed, and don't fit into one category.

Thank you! Yeah, it’s a story I’d been wanting to share for a long time. It was incredibly difficult saying all I wanted to in under 11 minutes. There was so much more out there on the subject. So there may have to be something of a part 2 in the future. But I agree, who he is and what he’s perceived to be are two very different things. But I imagine so are who he is and who he was 30 years ago.

I have to confess, I've always admired his story because I'm ethnically mixed - Irish-Mexican - so I've had a pretty similar experience as an actor.
I studied film myself, so I've been shooting/producing my own film, but it got derailed during covid. I'm about 75% complete though.
But I've often looked to Mutifacial, Vin, and his relentless will as a source of inspiration. So that's why I enjoyed your film essay so much.

Damn, he used to have such a banging bod. But moving beyond the superficial, it was nice to learn about his indie films, back when he was just beginning his career. That first indie film looked like it had some thought behind it. What a contrast with his later work.
A good reminder that many movie stars are also very hardworking people.

It's funny people are saying he's "wasted his talent" on these big budget action movies, because it's the exact same thing people around town said about George Lucas after THX and American Graffiti. After F&F wraps up, he'll have the rest of his life to make whatever he wants, without anyone's permission.
Also, I wonder what good he might be doing with the truckloads of money he makes on those films? Can you blame a guy who rides a franchise out to the very end if he uses that fame and fortune to pave a path for others to find opportunities in the business? Without knowing his personal situation or what he does with all the money he makes, I try hard not to judge him too harshly for his choices if he's not hurting anyone.

1. F&F isn't going to just suddenly wrap up yet because it's a huge cash cow.
2. It's possible to work on multiple projects, since F&F doesn't film everyday of every year, but Vin didn't.
3. Once you're older you have a different batch of acting roles to work with than younger, and arguably a smaller set of roles to choose from. Vin didn't diversify in the 2010s and risks not doing so in the 2020s.

I will never look at Vin Diesel the same again. I never hated him. I loved XXX and Private Ryan. I just had no idea how he took this chance and did this himself. Very cool video.

What a beautiful look at this mans journey. I had no idea the sensitive and daring beginning to his journey. He may not be the best actor but there is something about his spirit and sensitiivty to his own struggle a beautiful story of human overcoming adversity

I honestly knew nothing about Vin since I didn't grow up with FF, but man it's beautiful seeing an actors' early days and a reminder of the artists behind the action stars.
To be honest all I know him for is being buff action bro, so this video gave me the chance to appreciate the journey he went through!

Great video. Vin’s start in Hollywood reminds me of a modern day version of Stallone and how he wrote Rocky and got his start, facing huge challenges along the way and with little to no money at all.

Multi-Facial is truly fantastic. I still have a copy of it and every few years I watch it. If you ever want to change someone's mind about Vin Diesel, show it to them. I've never met anyone that has seen it, which is too bad. This is a great video, it's nice to see someone mention this short film because it's mostly been forgotten.

Vin seems like a really great guy and I get the impression he both feels stuck but also loves what he does. He's already talking about making spinoffs for fast series haha
This was awesome man, and really inspiring. I remember I loved vin diesel as a kid. He was the opposite of me, jacked with that awesome deep voice, so I couldn't help want to be like him. I loved him in Pitch Black. I remember reading an interview with him that he said he struggled for 16 years to finally make it, and to see this video really illustrate all of that was cool. Great work.
its really cool to see certain peoples journeys and how they got started. A lot of people were put into good families or great positions, but still the moves they made between that day 1 and where they are now can be learned from. its so cool to see some of this stuff.
You should see him with his big 'chosen fro', doesn't look quite so tough.
