    this is so good. none of that overplayed solo shit people do these days. Good sounding drums in a groovy beat and nice simple tight fills. I know it is a backing track, but this is what I need to listen to. People need to play drums like this again.

    maybe change to the ride for some time. And a heavy part on a crash along with an other beat on the BD would also be cool.

    thats a great sounding snare, what is it? did you have to process it much?

    • @JimDooley
      @JimDooley  5 років тому +2

      Thanks, It's a Sonor Hilite. I can't remember what processing I used for processing on this track. I usually use a bit of compression and a tiny bit of reverb.

    im horrible at improv, any tips?

    • @matthewhennessey5967
      @matthewhennessey5967 5 років тому

      I'd learn the minor pentatonic. Any time there's a minor chord, the minor pentatonic will work just fine (unless it's some jazz stuff).
      The minor pentatonic is a good "skeleton", you can add notes to it to make other scales.
      Like, take the "A" minor pentatonic (A, C, D, E, G). Add "B" and "F" to make the "Aeolian scale", or add "Bb" and "F" to make "Phrygian". Add "Bb and "Gb" to make Dorian.
      Add an "Eb" to make the blues scale, or add "Eb" and "Ab" to make the delta blues.
      Sorry if this is a pile of info junk.
      That's my lame suggestion. Learn the minor pentatonic, then add other notes for flavor. You always have something simple to fall back on, and have room to add fancier stuff.

      Matthew's response was right on the money. To add to that, for coming up with stuff to match a beat like this if you're in a rock mood, I would suggest starting with a good power chord with some distortion- maybe an E power chord, and palm-muting it and hitting quarter notes along with Jim Dooley's rhythm (It would sound like: 'chug chug chug chug...'). Then vary that rhythm, maybe throw in some alternate picked 8th notes ('chug chug chuga chuga chug chug' or any variation thereof). Just establishing that feel along with the beat will provide inspiration to then move that power chord around to come up with other rhythms/parts. I find starting like to be inspiring. If you're more into a funk/blues type mood then doing similar with 9th chords with a clean tone would also provide some inspiration. I'm thinking of putting up some lessons - so the first one I'll probably do will be a funk lesson to show people how to improvise funk rhythms with 9th chords for starters.Hopefully that helps.
